CELEBRATING A GREAT YEAR MUSIC MINISTRY

The members of the Saint Joseph Adult Choir (see left) joined music director Monroe Quinn at our historic Parish Life Center to celebrate another successful year “singing joyfully” for the Lord. Our talented Choir, Cantors and Parish Musicians grace our liturgies with their beautiful music—with our Choir singing at the 10:30 am Mass every Sunday in the upper church and our trio “RPM” (Rich Leavy on drums, Peter Greco on piano and guitar, and Monroe Quinn on guitar, piano and organ) playing at the 12 noon Sunday Mass. The Choir will be taking a well-deserved break for the summer. We will welcome them back after Labor Day.

ART & ENVIRONMENT Members of Saint Joseph’s Liturgical Art & Environment Committee (see opposite) came together to have an extraordinary time during Ordinary Time at a barbecue planned by sacristan Tom Moran (with hat) and hosted by Monsignor Hubba (center). The event was held in the Garden of Saints behind the parish office/rectory. The Art & Environment Committee is responsible for decorating our church and grounds so beautifully for all the liturgical seasons, including Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Their hard work and dedication make our worship spaces truly beautiful and enrich our liturgies. Thank you to them all!

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 9, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

In Luckiest Man, Jonathan Eig relates the life of Hall-of-Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig, one of the greatest Yankees and one of the most unusual baseball personalities. Gehrig graduated from Columbia at a time when few players earned a college degree. Shy and private, he spent his days off fishing (sometimes by himself and sometimes with his dad) or at Rye Beach amusement park, where he would ride the roller coaster alone for hours at a time. He loved baseball so much that, after Yankee games were over, he occasionally rounded up some of the neighborhood kids and played ball with them in the street until dark. Trying to become more popular with his teammates, he once showed up at the stadium with pickled eels and cookies his mother had made, which must have puzzled them greatly, accustomed as they were to celebrating with stronger ingredients. In those days, when radio was the king of media, General Foods lured Gehrig away from endorsing Wheaties, hiring him to promote its competitive brand, Huskies. In the course of a live national broadcast of one of America’s most popular shows, the host conducted a commercial, and asked Lou how he got to be so strong—Did he eat any special breakfast cereal? And Gehrig immediately replied: “Wheaties!” The blunder made national headlines. Happily for the sponsor, it got more publicity than it had ever hoped for. Sometimes God takes our weaknesses and foolish mistakes, and uses them to bring about surprisingly good results.

The Social Concerns Committee of Saint Joseph Church would like to extend their thanks for the contributions of our parishioners to the annual Summer Food Drive. Your generous grocery donations and the $905 in monetary donations will be a true blessing too many people in need of the food pantries at Ascension Church in New Milford and at the Catholic Charities-sponsored food program in Paterson, NJ.

HUNGER DOESN’T TAKE A VACATION THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY

DONATE SHOPRITE GIFT CARDS TO HELP NEEDY FAMILIES

Members of Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee help to support St. Peter the

Apostle Parish in River Edge three times a year when they welcome needy parents and children from Family Promise of Bergen County to their parish for a week. Family Promise assists working families with children who are temporarily homeless. Saint Joseph volunteers will help St. Peter’s for two weeks this summer to give those families a “home.” Your support is welcome. Gift cards to ShopRite will enable the volunteers to provide food for the families. If you would like to donate a gift card to ShopRite (available at ShopRite or at stores that carry gift cards, such as CVS), please drop off or mail the card(s) to our rectory/parish office at 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ 07646. Thank You!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For my yoke is easy,

and my burden light.” MATT 11:30

When we think of being good stewards, we may think that God is asking too much of us when He calls us to generously share our time, talent and treasure. However, we must remember that we are not “owners” of anything,

we are merely “stewards” of the gifts God has given us. All He is asking is that we give back a small portion of what He has already given us.

REMEMBER A LOVED ONE Bread and Wine Intentions are still available. Stop by the rectory/parish office to reserve your date.

MASS FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY ALCOHOLISM—JULY 15

A special mass and a support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at the Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Saturday, July 15, at 12:00 noon. Mass is offered for the support, healing and recovery of not only the man/woman directly affected with the abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, but also for anyone involved in the life of the alcoholic or drug addict. For information please call 201-768-7565.

IS YOUR MARRIAGE VALID? If you were married civilly, that is, not in the Catholic Church before a priest or deacon, it might not be a valid marriage. We invite you to speak with one of our priests if there are any questions or if indeed you

wish to validate your marriage. For a marriage to be valid in the Catholic Church, the marriage must be in a Catholic Church or Chapel and officiated by an authorized Catholic priest or deacon along with two witnesses. (There are limited interfaith exceptions with proper permission.) Please feel free to speak to one of our priests about this. The process to validate your marriage can be very simple and will then be blessed by the Church.

THANK YOU FOR DRESSING APPROPRIATELY!

Your recognition of the dignity and importance of the Eucharist and your respect for the sensibilities of others is greatly appreciated. Thank you for not wearing clothes that are more appropriate for the beach to church.
