LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR

TO VISIT SAINT JOSEPH AUGUST 19-20

The Little Sisters of the Poor from St. Joseph’s

Home for the Elderly in Totowa will be visiting our parish on Saturday and Sunday, August 19-20. The Little Sisters operate 188 homes throughout the world providing loving care to the elderly poor and have served the aged in New Jersey since 1879. The doors of the St. Joseph’s Home in Totowa run by the Little Sisters were opened in 1976. Today 103 elderly residents reside there. With rising costs in every area, the Home is dependent upon financial support from mailings, fundraisers and church col-lections. We hope when the Little Sisters visit us next week you will be as generous as your means allow. For more information about the Little Sisters of the Poor, visit their website at

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 13, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK I thank our parishioner Jim Kelly for bringing the following topic to my attention.

Scapa Flow, northeast of the Scottish mainland in the Orkney Islands, is one of the world’s great natural harbors. It is nestled among small islands that just about surround it. Viking raiders exploited its advantages in the middle ages and mentioned it in their 11th-century sagas. It became the chief British naval base of World War I because of its easy access to the North Sea, where Britain’s main strategy was to establish a screen of warships to contain German military and commercial sea power. The plan succeeded, largely because of Britain’s superior maritime forces. There was only one significant naval engagement in WW I: the Battle of Jutland, a titanic clash of “Dreadnaught”-class battleships that ended in a draw. After the German capitulation, the armistice terms decreed that the German fleet was to be interned at Scapa Flow. It numbered 78 warships, 16 of them among the largest of their time. On June 21, 1919, German rear-Admiral von Reuter ordered the scuttling of those ships rather than see the Allies acquire them, and by late afternoon all but 4 of them were sunk, the greatest loss of ships in a single day. A few small British craft tried to stop the destruction, opening fire and killing 8 German sailors. Scottish school children on an excursion on the tugboat Flying Kestrel were thrilled to see the action, which they thought was arranged as an entertainment for them. When World War II broke out, Scapa Flow was a confident repeat-choice to be Britain’s fleet headquarters. It was beyond the range of German bombers and its eastern approaches had been thought secure, especially since deliberately placed sunken ships had narrowed them during World War I. But on October 14, 1939, a German U-Boat managed to infiltrate the base and sank the battleship Royal Oak, which was anchored there. 833 British sailors died in the attack. To seal off Scapa Flow, the British created what came to be known as the Churchill Barriers, massive constructions of stone and concrete topped by vehicular roads. Much of the work on them was done by Italian prisoners of war from the North African campaign. The POWs asked for permission to build a chapel where they could worship. And in late 1943, the prisoners joined two Nissen huts together to achieve their goal. The leading spirits for the project were the Italian chaplain, Father P. Gioacchino Giacobazzi, the British commandant, Major T.P. Buckland, and, most influential of all, Domenico Chiocchetti, an artist who, with few resources, led a number of workers to make the chapel an impressive place for prayer. Chiocchetti designed an altar and a holy water font, both made of concrete. Over the altar, he painted a fresco, an impressive Madonna and Child inspired by a holy card he carried with him all through the war, which had a reproduction of Nicolo Barabino’s “Madonna of the

Olives,” a depiction of Our Lady, Queen of Peace. Chiocchetti also painted two windows (of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Catherine of Siena), did wall paintings of the symbols of the Evangelists and of a dove and angels, and made a tabernacle out of wood from a shipwreck. Skilled metal workers named Palumbi and Primavera contributed a beautiful sanctuary screen and candelabra. There were outside enhancements too. A worker named Buttapasta added a cement coating and led the construction of an impressive front façade, which was painted white with red trim. Over its door, a man named Pennisi made a red clay emblem of the head of the suffering Christ, and outside, near the entrance, the prisoners fashioned a moving statue of St. George slaying the dragon. After the war, in 1958, maintenance work was done to the chapel. In 1960, Domenico Chiocchetti returned to do more repairs, including to his paintings. Needed roofing improvements were also carried out. A Jesuit priest, Father J. Ryland Whitaker, offered a Mass in the Chapel. In his homily, he said that “In the heart of human beings the truest and most lasting hunger is for God.” Chiocchetti and his wife Maria returned for another visit in 1964, his last. He died in 1999. His wife died in 2007. After his 1960 visit, Chiocchetti wrote a letter to the people of Orkney, in which he said:

The chapel is yours—for you to love and preserve. I take with me to Italy the remembrance of your kindness and wonderful hospitality. I shall remember always, and my children shall learn from me to love you. I thank the authorities …, the courteous preservation committee, and all those who … have collaborated for the success of this work and for having given me the joy of seeing again the little chapel of Lambholm where I, in leaving, leave a part of my heart.

Scapa Flow’s military role ended in 1956. The harbor now accommodates an oil transfer facility. But the chapel still stands to remind those who visit it that, in all of life’s trials, people need God and God is always strongly present to his people. Today’s bulletin cover has a picture of the Orkney chapel. It was selected by our bulletin editor, Diane Hellriegel, who finds beautiful pictures for us to enjoy every week.

When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the power of his presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen how Jesus is calling you to live the extraordinary life He has in mind for you.

AN URGENT REQUEST

Our neighbor in faith, Pastor Stephen Sweet of Grace Lutheran Church in River Edge, has an urgent request on behalf of his dear wife. “My wife Nancy is in need of a kidney! She is now registered with the National Kidney Foundation Donor Bank, but it could well take over seven years before a kidney would become available to her. She is healthy enough to receive a kidney from a living donor. The sooner the better! As of now, she does not need dialysis (this can change overnight) which makes the transpant much easier and with fewer complications. “We have been told that it is the “person of faith” who usually steps up and unconditionally donates a kidney. So Nancy and I are reaching out to our beloved caring faith community. We realize that this is a tremendous request, but we are both optimistic that someone will prayerfully step forward with unconditional selfless generosity and love. “Anyone who is interested or needs more information please call Nancy at 201-674-8162, email her at [email protected] or writer her at 147 W. Midland Avenue, Paramus, NJ 07652. You may also call me on my cell at 201-956-2555 (or at Grace Lutheran Church—201-261-5415). “Thank you for listening, caring and especially for your prayers! God bless you all.”

FOOD DONATION THANK YOU We received the following letter from Catholic Family & Community Services in Paterson for your generous donations to our Summer Food Drive: “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the staff and our clients, I gratefully acknowledge your donation of one hundred and five pounds of food on 6/13/17 in support of the Catholic Family & Community Services programs. We appreciate your continued support of Catholic Family & Community Services and its mission. We support clients in their personal struggles to enhance their quality of life. The result is not simply a stronger individual or family, but rather a stronger community. In the end, a stronger community is the measure of a successful community-based social service agency. Catholic Family & Community Services is stronger and better able to serve the on-going needs of our community because of your support. We could not reach out to so many if you had not reached out to us with your support. Thank you again for your donation.”
