The Saint Michael the Archangel organization is coordi-

nating the September 29 - October 7 pro-life novena for

unborn babies. This multinational novena is a special nine

days for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass to be offered and

the Rosary to be prayed for the following intention: For

the protection of unborn human persons. You may be a

part of the September 29 - October 7 pro-life novena for

unborn babies by doing one or both of the following: 1)

Have the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered at least once

on any day during the novena; 2) Pray one rosary on

Message from Sister Cindy

A recent message from Pope Francis states: “Our Christian witness is authentic when it is faithful and unconditional.” We often

ask our young people to give service to the church, community, etc. All of us can find ways to be of service. What will you do this

week?

Preschool Sunday School: The first Sunday school class will begin next Sunday, September 21, during the 9:00 a.m. Mass in

the school cafeteria.

K-8 CCD Class: Regular classes will be held on Wednesday night, September 17, from 7:00 – 800 p.m.

High School CCD classes: Regular classes will be held on Wednesday night, September 17, from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.

SCHOOL NEWS

Dear Parishioners,

We would like to congratulate Mrs. Shelly Kleffner on her newest addition to her family. Mya Cate Kleffner was born last Sun-

day morning weighing 6 lbs. and 13oz. Everyone is doing well. We would also like to ask for continued prayers for Mrs. Cavender and

her family for the loss of Lil. Please keep all our staff, students and families in your prayers as we continue past the first month of school.

We will continue to pray for all the parishes in our community as well.

Calling all volunteers! We would like to start up a “Dream Team.” Anyone who has some time they would like to donate doing

odds and ends around the school and church, please call or email. If you have one day a week or even one day a month you can be part of

our “Dream Team.” Some of the responsibilities may include some carpentry work such as building benches, fixing broken items, build-

ing new structures as time and money allow, picking up items and setting them up, helping with the ceiling in the art room, etc. If car-

pentry work is not your forte, but you would like to still help out, we could always use help at school with filing, copying, laminating,

grading papers, etc.

A few reminders:

Achievement testing for grades 1-8 will be the week of September 29 through October 3 with make-up test dates being Octo-

ber 6 and 7. Please say some extra prayers for our students and teachers this week. We also ask that parents make sure their

child gets plenty of rest and eats a healthy breakfast. Please try not to schedule doctors’ appointments this week.

If you would like to donate any fresh food from your gardens or any meat that has been processed, we would gladly accept it

for our school lunches.

Wish list items:

We are in need of a gently used vacuum for the middle school building. If you have one that you would like to donate, please

drop it on by.

6 foot folding tables for the teachers work room. We would need approximately 6 to 8 tables. We do not have enough table

space for meetings that are held in the workroom. We could then move the big table to the cafeteria for more space for the

teachers to eat.

Ear plugs – for the whole student body. The ear plugs would be optional for each student to use while taking tests and quiet

study to help limit distractions. The kind of ear plugs we are talking about are the orange ear plugs that many use when oper-

ating loud equipment.

Study corals for more classrooms (some have them already) to help with distractions.

Thank you to everyone who has donated time, talents and money to help out St. Joseph School. We are so blessed and can’t

September Nurses Notes Soups and Stews

A few weeks ago I shared the Tea & Toast Diet and suggested soups and stews as an idea for a carry-in lunch or dinner for someone who

isn’t eating well. Below is one of my favorite recipes. If you have a recipe you would like to share, please drop it in the basket at the

main entry of church with my name written clearly on the front of an envelope.

Mom’s Vegetable Beef Stew

4 cups potatoes (cubed)

4 cups carrots (sliced)

1 cup celery (diced)

Soup bone (any amount you wish) you may substitute with stew meat or chopped round steak

16 ounces crushed or stewed tomatoes

16 ounces tomato juice

2 cups beef broth

2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon pepper

1 tablespoon chili powder

¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

2/3 cups brown sugar

Cook meat until tender (and falling off the bone). Save the broth. Mom uses a pressure cooker adding a small amount of water (about a

cup) to speed up the cooking process. Cool, pull the meat from the bone, discard fat. Save remaining liquid to use as the broth (cool and

skim off the hardened fat).

Add all ingredients to a large pot. If you are short on beef broth, add canned broth or make extra with beef bouillon cubes.

Simmer until vegetables are tender. If you are short on time use your presser cooker for a same day meal. Or toss it all in a slow cooker

early in the morning allowing it to cook all day long.

This recipe is a bit high in salt. You may choose low sodium versions of tomato juice and stewed tomatoes. Be aware that mom seldom

measures anything; she just knows what “looks right.” My measurements are a best guess; feel free to add a little more or less, but I use

these measurements at home and think it tastes great. As kids, we noticed mom often made this stew on the day she cleaned out the re-

frigerator, sometimes there was corn, peas, beans, even cabbage in that evening’s stew.

St. Joseph School is collecting Joe’s Market receipts dated from September 1, 2014, to March 30, 2015. Please send your receipts to

school, place in the box in the church vestibule or the one at the store. The school is also collecting “Box tops for Education” cou-

pons. These can be sent to school to “feed the frog” or placed in the drawer in the church vestibule.
