Saint Joseph

is able to provide this bulletin weekly

at no cost to the Parish.

The East Deanery wishes to thank Bishop Siegel for celebrating Mass with us on the 15th.

I personally want to say thank you to the Deanery Choir, that enhanced Mass and to the crew that hosted the reception following Mass.

We have received some great art work. The Pew Art Cards that our youngest members complete are spe-cial. Thank you to the artists and their parents.

As we prepare for Easter we also know that it is standing room only at most Masses. I want to remind you of the importance of a smile and greeting on East-er Sunday. Some of the people will be here for the first time this year, perhaps the only time this year. We do not want the reason to be that we failed to be hospitable, please welcome our brothers & sisters.

Also, allow me to share the message you will find on the Pew Art Cards —-

FOR OUR PARISHIONERS…

“The presence of our children is God’s gift to our Church. They are members of this Christian Communi-ty—a reminder that our parish and the church are alive and well.

Remember that the way we welcome children in church affects the way they respond to our parish, our faith and to God. Let them know they are at home in God’s house.

Please welcome our children and give a smile of en-couragement to their parents, who are blessed with the tough job of parenting in today’s often cold and unin-viting world.”

Yours in Christ, Father Ray

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

I read a story recently about a teacher

who donated to one of her former stu-

dents a kidney. This tremendous act of

selflessness came about because the

young person had lost most of the func-

tion his kidneys due to an illness. Literal-

ly, that teacher gave the gift of life to

someone who wasn't her own child or

another family member. This is certainly

radical stewardship.

How far would you go to give of your-

self so that another might live? Would you

have to love him or her like your own child

or parent? No one can deny it would be a

difficult decision, especially if your giving

put your own health at risk.

Reflecting on these things helps to

provide some perspective on the crucifix-

ion of Jesus. Not only did he suffer tre-

mendously at the hands of the Romans,

he gave his life for us so we might live

forever. What does true stewardship look

like? The cross is a symbol to us of total

surrender. When we are called to give of

ourselves in ordinary ways in daily life we

sometimes hesitate and think twice. Per-

haps when we are unsure we should look

to the cross and there we can find our

strength. And then when the call comes to

truly sacrifice and place our trust in God,

we may have already developed a lifestyle

that makes responding, "yes," that much

easier.

UNLEAVENED BREAD

ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

Our humanity bleeds through to-day's Gospel passages in more ways than one. We see both ela-tion and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days - even hours - Jesus is betrayed, aban-doned, denied, condemned, tor-tured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out.

There are nearly two millennia be-tween this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to re-turn to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we en-counter there. Are we the repent-ant woman at Bethany? Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that be-trays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't com-mit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying?

This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and pon-der its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!"

MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICE DAY

@ SAINT JOSEPH

Our middle school students spent the morning at St. Joe on Wednesday, beginning with mass at 8AM.

Following mass, our stu-dents had the opportunity to tour the facilities and learn more about the history of Ca-tholicism in Dubois County, including Saint Mother Theo-dore Guerin at St. Joe.

Part of the day included a period of time for our students to serve the parish by helping to clean and prepare for Holy Week! Plus early prep work for VBS, and helping the Priests.
