In a homily about the afterlife, the pastor spoke about the doubts he had when, as a young man, he was try-ing to figure out the mysteries of God and whether or not heaven really existed. His doubts all but vanished when he attended the viewing of his friend’s father. As everyone turned to leave, the wife of the man kissed him and said with great conviction and certainty, “Bye for now.” Something in her voice and in her tone answered his questions and doubts, assuring him of God’s existence and love. That small witness to faith changed his life. In this Gospel, the images that Jesus uses are prophetic images that point to the end of time and the coming of the Lord. We are not told to look for the signs, but rather to have a sense of urgency about what we do and how we live. When it is time—and only the Father knows when that will be—we will recognize it. There is no need for fear or worry. A life of faith does not allow for complacency, but rather demands an attitude of expectation and attentive-

ness. Today is the time to act and put into practice what we preach. Tomorrow is not time enough and we have no guarantee that to-morrow will come. Our chance is now. The task is not to wait and wonder when the Kingdom will come, but rather to work and pray so we are ready for it.

NOVEMBER—MONTH OF THE SOULS IN PURGATORY The month of November is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. To help the parishioners of Saint Joseph Basilica take full advantage of the month, the bulletin each week in November will fea-ture information on the catechesis surrounding this topic, as well as practical ways to commemorate the deceased and offer prayers for their souls. We hope this information helps you gain a better under-standing of a purgatory and aids you in your prayers for our dearly departed brothers and sisters in Christ.

Week 3: Praying for the Souls in Purgatory The souls in purgatory died in the mercy of God and will receive the promise of Heaven. However, because they still had attachment to sin at the time of their death, they must undergo a spiritual purification. Those in purgatory are un-able to pray for themselves. Since they rely on others for prayers, we, the Church Militant, can pray for them so they can join the saints in Heaven. Some ways to pray for the souls in purgatory include: Having Masses said for the departed

(especially on the anniversary of death), praying the Eternal Rest prayer, visiting a cemetery and pray over the graves of the deceased, sprinkling holy water on the ground, praying the Prayer of St. Gertrude for the Holy Souls, offering up your Holy Communion, give alms in the name of the deceased, and obtaining indulgences to be applied to the dead.

SHARING OUR BLESSINGS Reflection 4: Read Matthew 25: 14-30. Note that the first two servants doubled what they had been given and gave back not a por-tion, but the entirety of the original sum and the profit. On a very basic level, what are they left with, materially? Contrast this with the third servant, who hides the money and merely returns it. How does this betray a lack of trust in his master? Now turn to your own life, and imagine yourself as the servant and Christ as the master. Given what you have received from God in terms of time, talent, and treasure, how have you used it? To what extent have you been faithful, working with what you have been given for God’s glory and others’ benefit? To what have you been unfaithful, either leaving your gifts unused or for less important ends?

Week 4 Action Item This is the fourth action items for Sharing Our Blessings 2018. Once you have completed the Sunday reflection, consider the following: 1. In this Sunday’s reflections, you saw the difference between the faithful servants, who took their master’s money, invested it, and returned everything to their master. Consider your time, talent, and treasure. Whose is it, ultimately? How will you be called to make an account of these things before God? 2. Take the time to examine your finances over the past few years. What percentage of your annual income goes toward building up the local church, especially via parish offertory? Is it 1%? 5%? 10%? More? Write it down on a sheet of paper. 3. Now think about the coming year. What would it look like for you to “stretch” when it comes to your offering to the parish? What if you were donating one hour's worth of your weekly income to your parish - along with one hour of your time in worship as a community and maybe one hour of volunteering? Write down that dollar amount next to the previous one. Is it a stretch? Should it be more? Only you can decide. 4. Now act. Visit the parish’s online giving portal and consider making a 12-month commitment to a new offertory level that is meaningful and sacrificial to you, that helps you orient one more area of your life toward radical trust in God.

CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Please be generous in this week’s second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty pro-jects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and work on the margins. HURRICANE FLORENCE COLLECTION As we watched Hurricane Florence ravage the communities in the Carolinas and adjoining states just two months ago, we could not imagine that the worst of the damage was yet to come from the flooded rivers and streams which inundated neighborhoods and even entire communities. The lives and homes of many people have been crushed by this disaster. Once again, we as Catholics are called to respond. Dioceses across the country have been taking up second collections for relief efforts and will support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA. They will be involved in long-term efforts to restore communities after this wide-spread destruction. Also, funds will go to support the USCCB’s ef-forts to assist with pastoral and reconstruction aid to the Church. Hu-manitarian funds for any future disasters impacting communities out-side the US may be shared with Catholic Relief Services for their re-sponse efforts. Next week, we will be taking up a second collection to support the continued efforts of the Hurricane Florence Relief. THANKSGIVING REFLECTIONS Although Thanksgiving is a National holiday, it echoes the basic orientation of our Christian faith. Our central defining ritual as Chris-tians—the Eucharist, is the Greek word for Thanksgiving. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we remind ourselves that all we have and all we are comes from God. So as we celebrate this Thanksgiving Day, we not only thank God for the abundance of goods and freedoms we share as citizens, but also for the gift of God’s abid-ing presence in our lives through the risen Jesus and through the power of the Holy Spirit to sanctify our world.

TRZYDZIESTA DRUGA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 18 listopada 2018

LISTOPAD – MIESIĄC DUSZ CZYŚĆCOWYCH Listopad jest tradycyjnie poświęcony duszom w czyśćcu. Aby pomóc naszym parafianom bardziej owocnie przeżyć ten czas będziemy co tydzień zamieszczać krótką katechezę na temat czyśćca oraz praktyk duchowych pomagających upamiętnić zmarłych i wspomóc ich modlitwami.

Tydzień trzeci Dusze w czyśćcu umarły w łasce Boga i otrzymały obietnicę Nieba. Jednakże, ponieważ umierając wciąż były w przywiązaniu do grzechu,

muszą przejść duchowe oczyszczenie. Będąc w czyśćcu nie są w stanie modlić się za siebie. Dlatego też polegają na modlitwach innych, polegają na nas. Sposoby modlitwy za dusze w czyśćcu obejmują: Msze odprawiane za zmarłych (szczególnie w rocznicę śmierci), odmawianie modlitwy Wieczny Odpoczynek, nawiedzenie cmentarza i modlitwa nad grobami zmarłych, odmawianie Modlitwy św. Gertrudy, ofiarowanie Komunii Świętej, składając jałmużnę w imieniu zmarłego i uzyskując odpusty, za zmarłych.

CHRIST THE KING The Solemnity of Christ the King will be celebrated next Sunday, November 25. Pope Francis encourages us to make every effort to personally experience the transforming power of God’s love and mercy. We should make an examination of conscience of what we do to bring God’s mercy to those in need. Practically speaking, we should reflect on our corporal and spiri-tual deeds. Whom have we helped? Whom did we bring closer to God and the Church? What has changed our lives during this past year. The adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and devotion give us the opportu-nity to reflect on our life of faith.

In late autumn, you always see lots of s p o o k y c o s t u m e s a n d g h o u l i s h decorations. However, the autumn is also a great time to reinforce what it’s like to be a Christian and recently Sr. Jeanne did just that with her Fourth-Grade students. She challenged her class to think how each one of them is like a very popular autumn plant, a pumpkin. As each of her students sat and looked at their pumpkins, Sr. Jeanne

explained, “Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin. God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off. Then, He cuts the top off and scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, impurity, and greed. Finally, He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.” Once Sr. Jeanne, concluded her lesson, the students and parent volunteers spent the morning carving their own unique pumpkins. At the conclusion of the lesson, the classroom lights were turned-off and candles were placed inside each pumpkin. The students then reflected on John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

When we live in conformity to the Word, hearing Jesus’ words and living them out, the future holds no fear for us. ZBIÓRKA NA OFIARY HURAGANU FLORENCE Kiedy obserwowaliśmy, zaledwie dwa miesiące temu, jak huragan Florence pustoszył Karolinę Północna i Południową i sąsiednie stany, nie mogliśmy sobie wyobrazić, że najgorsze szkody miały dopiero nadejść: wylane rzeki i strumienie niszczące całe osiedla. W konsekwencji życie i dorobek wielu ludzi zostały kompletnie zrujnowane. Ponownie, jako katolicy jesteśmy wezwani, aby odpowiedzieć na pilną potrzebę bliźniego. Diecezje w całym kraju organizują zbiórki na rzecz pomocy ofiarom. Środki te będą przeznaczone na długofalowe działania na rzecz przywrócenia normalnego funkcjonowania społeczności po tym powszechnym zniszczeniu. Ponadto środki zostaną przeznaczone na wsparcie wysiłków Konferencji Biskupów USA na rzecz pomocy duszpasterskiej i odbudowy kościołów na zrujnowanych terenach. Fundusze humanitarne na rzecz wszelkich przyszłych katastrofy, które dotkną społeczności spoza USA mogą być przekazywane do Catholic Relief Services. W przyszłym tygodniu, podczas drugiej kolekty będziemy zbierali ofiary na pomoc ofiarom huragany Florence.
