~ Pastor’s Column ~ All are welcome to our Annual Festa, the Parish Festival of our great Italian tradition and the major fundraiser of our parish. I am excited to savor some nice Italian delicacies as I am told. Please join me and the thousands who will come to enjoy. Fr. Thomas

The Scriptures of the Fourteenth Sunday remind us that announcing the Good News of the Kingdom by words, deeds and life is not the task of only a few. Rather, it is a task for all baptized Christians. In the first reading, Isaiah sees the city of Jerusa-lem as the prototype of the rejoicing Church—the Church who comforts her children, “as a mother comforts her baby son.” He assures his listeners that they live in the certainty of Yahweh’s promises of love, protection, prosperity and salvation. In the second reading (Galatians 6: 14-18), Paul clearly teaches that it was Jesus’ death on the cross which brings one salvation and not a Jewish heritage. He reminds us that every Christian is called to be a “new creature,” and that the mission of each member of the Church is to bear witness to the saving power of the cross of Christ through a life of sacrificial, self-giving service. The Gospel, taken from the Gospel of Luke, describes, in Jesus’ commissioning of 72 disciples to preach the Gospel in towns and villages in preparation for his visit, the fulfillment of the prophetic promise made by Isaiah. He gives them “travel tips” for their missionary jour-ney. They must be walking witnesses of God’s providence by relying on the hospitality of others, living very simple lives, preaching the Good News and healing the sick. Today’s Gospel reminds us that the 1.5 billion Christians in the world today have the same mission to preach the Gospel of Christ to the other 4.5 billion non-Christians. We need to continue the preaching mission: Just as Jesus, in today’s Gospel, gave instructions to the seventy-two missionaries, he also gives each one of us a mission to carry out. As faithful Chris-tians, we should attract others to the Faith by lead-ing exemplary lives, just as a rose attracts people by its beauty and fragrance. This is our job and our responsibility. We must not miss the current oppor-tunities to be apostles through our words and deeds in everyday life. We need to avoid giving the counter-witness of practicing the “supermarket Catholicism” of our politicians who publicly proclaim their “Catholicism” and yet support abortion, gay marriage, human cloning and experimentation with human embryos. Nor should we be “armchair Catholics,” “cafeteria Catholics” or “Sunday Catho-lics” who bear counter-witness to Christ through our lives. Let us start preaching the Gospel in our families by leading exemplary Christian lives, in which spouses love and respect each other, raise their children in the spirit of obedience and service, discipline them with forgiving love and teach them by persistent example to pray, love and help others by sharing their blessings.

Procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel 2016:

This year’s procession promises to be an enriching spiritual experience. We would like to make the feast day of our patron, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a memorable one. Kindly keep in mind that the procession is an expression of worship and not a parade or social gathering. Please observe the following guidelines: (see procession booklet for complete guidelines) No talking… only praying and singing is permitted. Dress respectfully… avoid shorts, t-shirts and jeans. Men are kindly asked to wear a sport

shirt and slacks. Women are asked to wear a dress, skirt or slacks. Follow the directions of our Procession Committee Members and walk in two single files. We will assemble inside the church at 3:30 pm on Sunday, July 10th.

At this time we will organize the volunteers who will carry the statue and banners. The procession will start promptly at 4:00 pm.

Invite your family and friends to come and enjoy an evening of fun featuring live music,

games and good food. Remember that without each and everyone’s help we cannot

make our Parish FESTA the success that it has been. We are a family that works together and celebrates together. This is an important event

in the life of our parish family. Hopefully you will join us at this festive occasion.

well as in the post office parking lot. Additional metered parking is available at the Galleria Mall and Library parking lots.

14to.
