In the early days of Advent when I was a little boy I would always spend some time at her house in St. Paul. Since I was afraid of the dark, and I didn’t like sleeping in the big spooky upstairs that was full of shadows and noises, I slept with her in the downstairs front room. There was a big picture window that looked out across the street to a spooky house that we were convinced was the home to a murderer and a small 1930’s apartment building that looked to my childish eyes like the hang-out for gangsters and thugs. I would curl up next to my grandmother and try to banish my shadowy fears and not look out the window to the frightening world just on the other side of a pane of glass. Knowing of my fears my grandma would plug-in the lights on her oddly white Christmas tree with the bubble lights and old-fashioned ornaments. The room would glow with colored light and shiny wonder. She would whisper in my ear, “When you’re afraid just look at the lights and ornaments, snuggle up and everything will be all right.” I would fall asleep with visions of light and beauty swirling before my eyes and with the steady breathing of my grandma reminding me that everything would be fine, and when I opened my eyes the world was full of light, the shadows and fear of the night were gone, and we were ready for new adventures. As we begin Advent, winter has taken hold of the world. It is cold and dark, and the simplest tasks seem to wear us down. Putting on coats and hats and boots and gloves, scrapping the ice and snow off of the car and warming it up before we can get where we are going can seem like pure drudgery. It seems that we are getting up in the dark, and by the time our work day is done it is already getting dark again. At times it can seem like the world is trying to beat us up. And yet, as I drive through the night to and from meetings there are islands of light and beauty as people decorate their homes and yards for Christmas. In the vast, cold darkness of winter we express our hope and dreams with red and green lights shining in the darkness. We are waiting in the dark for God to do something wonderful, and we long for it to happen now. Our hearts can falter, but Jesus reminds us in the Gospel today that we only need to “stand erect and raise our heads because your redemption is at hand.” Let us go together into the immense darkness of this season with our eyes turned up searching for the first signs of the dawn of salvation. Dark, Light and Hope My Grandma Stubeda didn’t like doors, and so the only doors on her house were to the outside and on the bathroom, and while she had two bedrooms upstairs where the bathroom was, she

never in my memory slept in a bed, but chose to sleep in the downstairs front room on a pull-out couch. In the early days of Advent when I was a little boy I would always spend some time at her house in St. Paul. Since I was afraid of the dark, and I didn’t like sleeping in the big spooky upstairs that was full of shadows and noises, I slept with her in the downstairs front room. There was a big picture window that looked out across the street to a spooky house that we were convinced was the home to a murderer and a small 1930’s apartment building that looked

to my childish eyes like the hang-out for gangsters and thugs. Ladies, please remember to drop off your baked goodies during the day on Saturday. If you are able to help sell, please sign-up in the gathering area. THE RE CONNECTION: Does the world ever feel upside down to you? Living in a world that contains both dark and light never seems to get much easier, does it? Faith and reason do help to get us through it all. What is cool about what goes on in these Hallowed Halls, is that no matter how tough it may seem to forge ahead, Faith and reason never have to be “dumbed down” to help the kiddos understand. A working wisdom, if you will, is there for our students to grab a hold of through active participation, dedicated study, and grace from above gifted through prayer. Everyone will get out what they put in…much like the journey we all embark upon this weekend through Advent. Let us all push ourselves a little these next four weeks, that we may not just be prepared, but that we will appreciate the coming of our Lord with even greater depth and knowledge of how truly wonderful God becoming man is. Can I get an, “AMEN!!!”?

THANK YOU to St. Pius X parish for your recent donation of 127 pounds of food and $50.00 to the McLeod Emergency Food Shelves. Your kindness and generosity is sincerely appreciated.

DIOCESAN MINISTRIES APPEAL: “A Gift of Self”: Thank you to all who have given to the Diocesan Ministries Appeal. If you have not had the opportunity to make your pledge or gift yet, envelopes are available in the back of church at Holy Family and Holy Trinity and in the kiosk in the gathering area at St. Pius X. You may return your pledge or gift in the envelope in the collection on the weekend, drop it in the mail, or pledge online at www.dnu.org/dma. Whichever way you choose to donate your gift will count towards our parish goal. Be assured that your gift will only be used to support those ministries designated in the DMA brochure. These ministries are vital to our diocesan Church.

ST. PIUS X CHRISTMAS TREE SALES CONTINUE: The annual St. Pius X Christmas Tree Sale event continues this week. Please see the St. Pius X Week at a glance section for a schedule of when you can purchase your tree.

CHRISTMAS GIVING PROJECT CONTINUES: Our participation in the McLeod County Christmas project is underway. There are collection boxes for toys for children from 1 day – 17 years old in each of the parishes. Let our generosity be a proclamation of God’s generous gift of salvation. We have only 11 days to complete our gift to our neighbors and friends.

DIOCESAN ADVENT PRAYER SERVICE: All families, especially those with children, are invited to attend an Advent Prayer Service with Bishop John M. LeVoir on Sunday, December 9. The service is at 4:00 p.m. at the Church of St. Anastasia in Hutchinson. This service is designed to help us focus on Advent and prepare for the true meaning of Christmas, centered on the birth of Jesus. Families are encouraged to bring the Baby Jesus figure from their home nativity set. The figure will be blessed by Bishop LeVoir individually as families come forward in procession. There will be a blessing for families and expectant mothers as they prepare for Jesus’ birth in their hearts. A “swaddling clothes” collection (blankets, sleepers, layette items, etc.) and cash donations will be taken for babies in need. For more information, contact the diocesan evangelization and catechesis offices at 507-233-5325.

Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Please be as generous as you are able! Please make your checks payable to the Church of the Holy Family, the Church of the Holy Trinity or the Church of St. Pius X. We will consolidate all of our donations and forward them to the appropriate organization. We are not able to cash checks made out to the specific organization or collection.
