In the first reading from Job we hear God’s response to Job’s complaint and questions. In his suffering, Job struggles with the question of evil and of God’s presence and power in the face of that evil. God’s response invites us to contemplate his power and grandeur and to trust in his providence. In the Gospel, Jesus reveals the power of God in his rebuke of the storm, the calming of the waters and the quelling of his disciples’ fears. We are invited to renew our trust in our provident and all-powerful God. We are reminded that in the midst of life’s storms, trials and difficulties we live in the presence of a loving God. Like Job and the disciples in the boat we too long to feel God’s provident care, and to see his power. We wish for a wondrous sign or a miraculous event to bolster our hope and faith. The problem is that miracles are rare. So what are we to do? Perhaps we need to adjust our vision a bit. On this Fathers’ Day weekend we have the perfect opportunity to see and feel the presence of God’s love and power living among us. This presence may not be accompanied by the voice of God from a whirlwind, nor by the stern rebuke of Jesus calming the sea, but it is real, present, and in some mysterious way, miraculous. It is no surprise to me that God chose to share his title and role with the fathers in our families. In his desire to reveal himself to us, God chose our own fathers as the path to understanding for our halting minds. These men who love us before they know us, who care for us even when we are incapable of gratitude, who meet our demands and needs when we are vulnerable and weak, who protect us from the harsher realities of the world until we are ready to grapple with them, and who continue to accompany us when we strike out on our own paths in life are living reflections of our provident, powerful and loving God. For many of us our fathers’ insistence on a living faith, responsible action, hard work, kindness, generosity, duty, loyalty and love are our introduction to life in Christ. In their prayer we learn to speak to God, in their love we glimpse the love of God, and in their discipline we hear the call of Christ to a life of integrity and service. In their love for us in our failings we see a God whose love is faithful and unshakeable. In their suffering and worry over our lives’ shortcomings we come to know of God’s constant call to repentance and conversion. In their selfless work to support our families we see the value and meaning of participating in creation. In an uncertain world our fathers stand as signs of steadfast love, unflagging concern and hopeful faith. They who share the title father with God are signs of the providence, grace, protection and love of the God who has revealed himself to us, not only in the Sacred Scriptures and in Jesus Christ, but in the providential details of those who give us life. Let us rejoice that wonders and miracles do not cease, and that God still speaks to us day after day. Fr. Tony Stubeda

God our Father and Our Fathers In our readings today we reflect on the power and majesty of God. In the first reading from Job we hear

God’s response to Job’s complaint and questions.

The Supreme Court is now considering whether states can define marriage as the union of one man and one woman, and whether a state that does so must recognize a “marriage” contracted out-of-state by two persons of the same sex. The Court is expected to rule on both questions by the end of June. A broad, adverse ruling would redefine marriage in the law throughout the entire country, changing thousands of laws re-garding marriage, family and children and threatening religious freedom in numerous ways. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has urged the Supreme Court to uphold the right of states to define marriage as the union of husband and wife and to recognize only such unions, all for the good of society and particularly for children.

MARRIAGE AND THE SUPREME COURT

WHAT YOU CAN DO

PRAY, FAST, SACRIFICE

The Bishops have encouraged Catholics to participate in a Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. Visit www.usccb.org/pray to learn more and commit to praying and fasting for life, marriage, and religious liberty.

The Bishops have also called for a Fortnight for Freedom from June 21-July 4 focusing on the Freedom to Bear Witness. Visit www.FortnightforFreedom.org.

ADVOCATE FOR MARRIAGE Don’t be afraid to talk about it. Be a witness for the truth of marriage. Take ad-vantage of opportunities to speak about it kindly with family, friends, neighbors or co-workers. Be prepared for false charges of discrimination and to respond with the following truths in charity. What is marriage? Marriage is the permanent and exclusive union of one man and one woman, for the good of the spouses and for the procreation and education of children. One man, one woman, for life.

USCCB Nationwide Bulletin Insert Spring 2015

The difference is the difference. Men and women are equal and different. Sexual difference is essential to marriage and raising chil-dren. Ignoring or removing “the difference is… the problem, not the solution” (Pope Francis). Mothers and fathers matter. They aren’t interchangeable. While single parents and others raising children often make heroic sac-rifices and deserve support, society should also affirm every child’s basic, natural right to come from and be raised in the loving marital union of his or her own father and mother. Protecting marriage matters to everyone. Law is a teacher, and redefining marriage in the law teaches that one sex is interchangeable with the other, and that either a mother or a father is dispensable as a parent. It teaches that marriage is whatever “consenting adults” say it is, and that adults have a “right” to children they did not con-ceive. These are simply false.

RETAINING WALL PROJECT: As many of you have noticed and reminded us, the retaining wall is in need of attention. In order to proceed with needed work, we must have at least 75% of the money on hand and the rest firmly pledged. We have a bid for the work on the wall for $54,000.00. Through last year’s Diocesan Ministry Appeal, we expect to have raised $11,080.00. If you are interested in helping us reach our goal of raising $42,920.00 for the completion of this project, please talk to Fr. Tony or Shirley Nowak, our parish business administrator. In the interim we will be working on the permissions and paperwork necessary for the project. Together let us strive to preserve our parish’s physical resources.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: This year’s annual Knights of Columbus Family Picnic is scheduled for August 9 in Oscar Olson Memorial Park from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please sign-up, by, July 15 on the form posted on the bulletin board in the gathering area so we will know how much food and beverage we need to provide. KC BRAT STAND: the KC Brat Stand will be open at the Coborn’s Store on June 26, 27 and 28 from 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Come enjoy a brat and support the Knight of Columbus. Reminder: Knights please check the schedule on the bulletin board to see when you are working the KC Brat Stand. Change from the KC Newsletter last week: Next KC Paper Drive will be July 16, 17, 18, to coincide with the CCW Rummage Sale.

THE RE CONNECTION: What will it take to continue the building up of the Church…Faith, hope, and charity? Our kiddos will recognize those as the Cardinal Virtues. (They better darn well recognize them as such, or yours truly needs our Pastor to invite me into his office where he gives said dummy “what for” and peels the paint off the walls in doing so for being a contemptible failure!) Another relevant question would be who will it take to continue the building up of the Church…you, me, them? Everybody??? If you answered “all of the above”, well, you are smarter than Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver on that episode where he learns that the water will be shut off in his neighborhood on a hot summer day and summarily goes about filling up a large container with refreshing H2O then selling it to his thirsty neighbors as they are out doing their chores. (And if you haven’t seen that one, don’t worry, Ward didn’t let him get away with it.) Anyway, yes, it indeed takes everyone to build up the Church. If you’ve got a hankerin’ for some Church buildin’, our beloved RE Program is currently in need of two Catechists. One for Grades 3/4, and another for Grades 5/6. So here’s to hopin’ that you embrace those Cardinal Virtues and have faith in the Almighty workin’ through you in charitable fashion to help lead the kiddos of our parish to Him. If you are interested, please contact either Fr. Stubeda or Mr. Simons. (And if you reach out to the latter, please feel free to give him “what for” for referencing a sit-com that last aired fifty-two years ago. Here’s to keepin’ it fresh! )

THANK YOU

We leave here with mixed feelings. We have always enjoyed working in our school and parish for the last ten years and we recognize this is the call of our Franciscan Vocation, but it is difficult to leave this ministry and many good people we have had the pleasure of knowing and loving.

: We are very grateful to Fr. Tony and St. Pius X staff for hosting a wonderful going away party for us. And also we would like to acknowledge our thankfulness to our beloved parishioners who came and spent time with us. We very much appreciate your generous gifts, cards, and most of all your loving words and wishes.

As we leave here to begin a new ministry as teachers in our convent school in India, our wish for you is that God keep you safe, that God continue to hold you safely and securely in the palm of His hand. May you continue to grow in your love and in your desire for the Lord Jesus as you continue life's journey. We welcome you to India at anytime. Or otherwise we will see you in heaven. Until then let us remain in love, faith, and prayer. Thank you! May God bless you all!
