Sunday Reading Reflection

Today is an upward spiral. It is a joy fest; a “too good to be true, but it is true” day. We know that a close reading of scripture, as a whole reveals, God’s call to obedience,

humility, and service. Christ ultimately reveals this plan of God for us. Obedience, humility, and service, kind of sound like misery and slavery, and indeed the comparison is made in sacred scripture more than we would think or might like. However, today, there is a lifting of the veil! There is something more than a glimmer of hope. Something more than a ray of sunshine or a silver lining. There is great and abundant reason for rejoicing, laughter, happiness, and everything good. God, who calls us to obedience, tireless humility and dramatic self effacing service, now has a command for us. We must follow it in all humility and with devotion and to the letter. He commands us to rejoice! This rejoicing is indeed our job. It is something he says loud and clear this day. He tells us and tells us again. He doesn’t suggest it. He orders it. And he answers questions about how to do it: we are to do it always and everywhere. We are his humble and obedient servants and so we must roll up our sleeves and get to work rejoicing. What a great revelation we have this fine day. In God’s name, and with his authority, it is my great honor and privilege to have to order you all in this way: Rejoice! Be glad! No excuses! Don’t delay! Alleluia.

Please consider donating to TEO (Townsend Ecumenical Outreach), a community organization whose purpose is to provide emergency and temporary assistance to Townsend residents that are in need of a helping hand. TEO is located at 82 Bayberry Hill Rd., Townsend, MA. 978-597-2209. Current Needs: Paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, tissue); Personal toiletries (shaving cream, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, shampoo, conditioner). Classes for Adults

Becoming

Catholics. RCIA

(Rite of Christian

Initiation for

Adults) is the parish-based program by which adults are

fully welcomed into the Catholic Church. RCIA candidates participate in weekly meetings of instruction in the Catholic faith. The process leads to the reception of the Easter sacraments (sacraments of initiation) at the Easter Vigil in the spring. Ed Kelly is coordinator of this process. Any interested person should contact the Rectory now at 978-597-2291. March for Life 2019

5:30 PM - Vigil Mass 8 PM Overnight Accommodations at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart (bring sleeping bags and or air mattresses etc.) 8 AM Morning prayer 9 AM Mass with Cardinal Sean 12 PM Rally at the National Mall 1 PM March for Life 4 PM Depart for Home After Midnight Arrive back at St Joseph's, Pepperell Friday Jan 18, 2019 It is free, thanks to the Flatly Foundation, a foundation set up to help fund Catholics. It is also the case that in the past many youth have gone and gone again and again. It is a great adventure. It is for all ages but it is a pilgrimage so we are roughing it. One high school student once asked to have her finals moved to accommodate this, as it is a religious event, (the vigil at the National Basilica) and they accommodated her. I wouldn’t miss this event if I were you. If at all possible you should all go. First come first serve. It is a great time of grace. We pray the liturgy of the hours together, we spend a lot of time in the Lord’s temple (the Church). We are offering up our sufferings for our sins and the sins of the whole world especially for sins against the unborn our own country. It is so educational. We are not just touring the National Basilica. We are using our National Basilica. We are not just visiting the Capital. We are using our Capital. It was made so that peaceful people could gather and exercise their freedom. ~Fr. Jeremy St. Martin

Confirmation Retreat. These Catholic youth conferences are

always a lot of fun and I would love it if our students had the

unable to attend the youth conference.

April 25, 2019 - Confirmation Preparation 2 Rehearsal, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. (candidates and sponsors) April 27, 2019 - Rite of the Sacrament of Confirmation during 5:00 p.m. Mass Students and sponsors meet in Fr. Mealey Hall at 4:00 p.m. Prayers

ALL students in grades 1-10 should know at least the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. Please help your child learn these prayers. Reconciliation and Mass It is important to get into the habit of bringing your child regularly to Mass and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Families must attend Mass EVERY weekend and Holy Day of Obligation AS THIS IS OUR FAITH. This is most important to our relationship with Jesus. Just as we need food to nourish our bodies, we need the Eucharist, which is the True Presence of Jesus, to nourish our souls. The Eucharist is truly Jesus’ Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. The Lord is waiting to pour forth his Grace upon us in the sacraments! Learning about the faith must be accompanied by the practice of the faith. I look forward to seeing you at Mass!!

This past weekend’s offertory was: $4,826.00. Our Immaculate Conception collection

was: $479.00 Our 2nd collection this weekend is for our utilities. There is no 2nd collection for next weekend. Did you know that the entire collection on both Monday, December 24th and Tuesday, December 25th is to benefit our retired clergy? 100% of this money is sent to the Archdiocese of Boston in Braintree for them to help with all the costs associated with helping these men, who gave their entire lives over to God, live out their lives in a dignified and comfortable manner. The Christmas collection is a wonderful way for you to support our retired priests. We are truly blessed to have had so many of our former Pastors being taken care of through this collection, and the Easter collection. Thank you for thinking of them at this time. What some people don't realize is that St. John's receives no money at all from this collection; our absolute largest collection of the entire year. So, if you are still looking for that great little year-end tax donation - please remember your own home parish. You can mail in a check to our rectory: St. John's Parish, 1 School St, Townsend, MA 01469. Please make sure to mark on your check that it is a DONATION TO ST. JOHN'S. Please put your envelope number right on the check so we can easily make sure you receive credit for your donation. You can also make a donation through our ONLINE GIVING site specifically for a donation to St. John's at this time of year. Just because we don't receive any money from this Christmas collection, does not mean that we still don't have bills to pay. Thank you for thinking of our retired clergy as well as your own parish at this time joyous time.

From the time that we were young kids growing up in Dorchester receiving First Communion, through our marriage, as we brought up our own four boys, and now as grandparents, Boston priests have been a guiding light that we reach out to in dierent situations that have come up in our lives. As parents, our faith life has helped us to guide our family. We are an ordinary family, and, like all families, things don’t always go smoothly. The priests we have known through the years, like Fr. Peter Martocchio, have helped us to learn to take things in stride and put our faith in God, and that there is always hope. While not perfect, ours has been a wonderful life, which has been enriched by many Boston priests who have helped us along the way.
