PRAYER CHAIN REQUESTS
Call Jim or Paulette at: ............... 688-3237
Marianne’s Reflection
I recently stumbled across this Great Canticle of
Love from St. Augustine’s Confessions in a daily
reflections book. I was struck breathless by its
beauty and unguarded
openness of expression. I
a love letter, a very personal
confession of love for God and
an acutely intimate reflection
on the relation-ship between
the lover and the beloved. Its
sensuality is so human, yet it
recognizes the divine so
clearly in and through that
sensuality.
Recently, I asked a group of
women to close their eyes and
ponder two questions: What
does God look like and what
color do they see?
Surprisingly, color was easiest
for them to name. The
association of a certain color
with God elicited feelings like
love, warmth, embrace,
comfort. God was not a
picture, but an experience of a
personal and intimate
relationship, a prayer.
Spiritual writer Henri
Nouwen says the literal
translation of “pray always” (1
Thess 5:17) is “come to rest.”
He points out that for many of
us prayer means nothing
more than speaking with God.
It’s often one sided: we
present a problem and expect
a solution. We ask a
question, and expect an
answer. We ask for guidance,
and expect a response. What
we think is dialogue is in fact
a monologue.
Also, for many of us just
thinking about God is prayer: What is God like?
What does God do? What does God want? There
is a place for this kind of prayer, but it does not
necessarily lead us to really experience God.
According to Nouwen, “The crisis of our prayer life
is that our mind may be filled with ideas of God,
while our heart remains far
from him.” Real prayer comes
from the heart.
This beautiful passage from
Augustine is not what we
typically recognize as prayer.
Most of us rely on the
traditional prayers we’ve
grown up with. Whether it’s
the meal prayer, “Bless Us, O
Lord,” or the Catholic trilogy,
“Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory
Be,” what I love is that we can
recite them together, and that
means as much as the words
themselves. I often lead
groups in spontaneous prayer,
but I routinely include
traditional prayer as a way to
unite everyone in the act of
praying.
Many of us probably don’t
even remember learning these
prayers. Being around our
elders praying, the words just
imbedded themselves in our
minds and hearts. As we grew
to know the words, we also
came to know they were
sacred.
As a child, I learned that
prayer is the “lifting up of our
minds and hearts to God.” As
I’ve matured, I’ve learned that
the “lifting up” creates a
connection, a living, loving,
mutual relationship. It is not
me alone; it is not God alone.
It is a union. May we all learn
how to open our hearts and
pray our own Great Canticle of
Love to God.
Blessings, Marianne
Thirty– Third Sunday in Ordinary Time page 3
Augustine’s Great Canticle of Love
My love of you, God, is not some
vague feeling;
it is positive and certain.
Your word struck into my heart
and from that moment I loved you.
Besides all this, all about me,
heaven and earth and all that they
contain proclaim that I should love
you.
But what do I love when I love you?
Not material beauty of a temporal
order;
not the brilliance of earthly light;
not the sweet melody of harmony
and song;
Not the fragrance of flowers, per-
fumes, and spices;
not manna or honey;
and not limbs the body delights to
embrace.
It is not these that I love when I love
my God.
And yet, when I love him,
it is true that I love a light of a cer-
tain kind,
a voice, a perfume, a food, an em-
brace;
but they are the kind that I love in
my inner self,
when my soul is bathed in light that
is not bound by space;
when it listens to sound that never
dies away;
when it breathes fragrance that is
not borne away on the wind;
when it tastes food that is never
consumed by the eating;
when it clings to an embrace from
which it is not severed by fulfillment
of desire.
This is what I love when I love my
God. Confessions 10, 6-8

Becoming our Best Selves One Step at a Time
It’s hard to be Catholic sometimes -- I mean to BE
Catholic -- not just be A Catholic. To actually BE Catholic
requires a lot from us, lots of times more than we can
scrape up by ourselves.
Just for example, we’re supposed to be nice to people,
to treat them with respect, and actually love them! Now,
it’s not hard to be nice to nice people, but man, it’s a
different story with that old crab down the block, or with
that arrogant department head, or with that rotten kid
who keeps throwing fast food containers and Milk Duds
boxes in our yards.
For sudden attacks of murderous intentions when we
cross paths with one of those people, thank Heaven for
level-headed spouses who calm us down, and for
strangers passing by that we don’t want to look like ma-
niacs in front of.
Of course, preventive measures that keep us from los-
ing it in the first place are far better. Really, being nice
is habit forming if we practice a little. We can greet peo-
ple. We can smile, even at strangers. We can swallow
the sarcastic remarks our brains dream up. We can
change the subject if it’s the conversation that’s getting
to us. We can stay in frequent contact with nice people
and let their niceness rub off on us. And just saying sin-
cerely, “Holy Spirit, give me strength,” works great. Just
simple stuff to give us the help we need.
Roger LeBouton, Lay Minister
ST. JUDE OFFICE HOURS The St. Jude Office will be closed

POLICY FOR WEEKDAY
MORNING MASS DURING WINTER MONTHS
Who ever thought that before All Saints Day we would
have this white non-fluffy stuff they call snow on the
ground! This is a good time to remind everyone that...
If the schools are closed due to inclement weather
please remember that there will not be morning Mass.
Our number one concern is always your safety, so do
not attempt to go out in a snow storm to come to Mass.
We also need the parking lots free of vehicles to help
make the snow plowing easier.

Volunteers Needed!
Catholics are a sacramental people who un-
derstand that Holy Eucharist is central to
our faith. A very important ministry of
service that we at St. Jude offer to our
home-bound parishioners is to bring them
the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Communion
every Sunday. We are in need of more
volunteers.
Time Commitment
3-4 Sundays a year on a rotating sched-
ule. Usually starting after 7:30 Mass and
returning 11:00-11:15. Training provided.
If you feel called to this ministry, please
contact Marianne @ 235-7412.
Our warmest welcome to all who cele-
brate with us, whether visitors, long-
time residents, or newly arrived in the
Parish. If you would like to join St. Jude
the Apostle Parish please call the parish
office at 235-7412.
If you are already a registered parish member and need
to make changes, you may use this form to update your
records. Please complete this form and place in the
collection basket or return to the parish office. Thank You.

Recommendations for Physical
Activity in Adults and Kids
By: Sue Davies, RN
Part II
Are you fitting in at least 150 minutes (2.5
hours) of heart-pumping physical activity per
week? If not, you’re not alone. Only about one
in five adults and teens get enough exercise to
maintain good health. Being more active can
help all people think, feel and sleep better and
perform daily tasks more easily. And if you’re
sedentary, sitting less is a great place to start.
Recommendations for Kids Children 3-5 years old should be physically
active and have plenty of opportunities to move
through the day.
Kids 6-17 years old should get at least 60
minutes per day of moderate to vigorous-
intensity physical activity, mostly aerobic.
Include vigorous-intensity activity on at least
3 days per week.
Include muscle– and bone– strengthening
(weight-bearing) activities on at least 3 days
per week.
Increase amount and intensity gradually
over time.
