THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH
GOOD SEEDS Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of the parables—the parable of the man sowing good seed. Lest we think that these parables are simply amusing little anecdotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wailing and grinding of teeth in a fiery furnace await those who are children of the evil one. This parable points to the struggle for today’s believer. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to preparing for the last days, the harvest, by blossoming as the good seeds we were created in love to be.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Monday: St. Apollinaris Tuesday: St. Lawrence of Brindisi Wednesday: St. Mary Magdalene Thursday: St. Bridget Friday: St. Sharbel Makhlūf Saturday: St. James SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898) July 24 The convenience store owner chatted animatedly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his American clientele. So soon after 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That changed when an American customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was happily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admitted. “But we help the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Artisan of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Muslims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’s life. He died after suffering a stroke while celebrating the liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed. How lovely if after our passing, we too could be remembered for having brought very different people to the one God, together in peace.

Good News in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
The Senate Judiciary committee just passed the EARN IT ACT which opens it up for discussion in the Senate. This bill states that companies will no longer be protected from lawsuits involving online child exploitation unless they can show best practices, meaning they have measures in place to prevent online child exploitation. Currently, one can’t bring a civil lawsuit against an online technology platform where their child has been exploited because Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act prevents them from being held liable in any way.
This link explains the EARN IT ACT: https://endsexualexploitation.org/articles/the-earn-it-act-will-protect-children-from-online-sexual-exploitation/
Please contact both your state senator and congressperson to ask them
to support the EARN IT ACT.

This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad.
– Psalm 118:24
We praise our Lord and give thanks to him for the children that have celebrated First Communion.
First Holy Communions are always special celebrations that bring joy to our community but now more than ever they are a sign of hope and
confidence that God will continue leading us during this unsettling time.

Fr. William Goldin celebrated the Sacrament
and urged them, “to allow Jesus in the Eucharist to change your lives from now on.”
We are so happy for all you children
receiving Jesus ...
May you always seek Him in the Eucharist and feel God's love for you all the days of your life.
Pray always!

ST. IRENAEUS STUDENTS WILL RETURN TO THE CLASSROOMS
5 DAYS A WEEK IN THE FALL
Our school year will be begin on Monday, August 24, 2020 and St. Irenaeus does plan to have
students return to the classrooms Monday-Friday. Class sizes will be kept to no more than 20 in a room
for more social distancing. Our faculty and staff will wear face
masks. We will also stagger breaks and lunch periods, have regularly scheduled hand washings, and more extensive cleaning of our
classrooms.
We are still accepting applications but space is limited in some grades. Call our Registrar, Mrs. Lily LoBasso,
for more information at 714-827-4500 ext. 111 or visit
our website at: www.stischoolcypress.org.
SPOTLIGHT ON ALUMNA LAURYN GUTIERREZ
“I am very blessed for my experience at St. Irenaeus, as well as Saint Joseph High School,” says Lauryn Gutierrez. She graduated from St. Irenaeus in 2016 and spent the last four years at Saint Joseph very involved in many activities and leadership roles. Lauryn was ASB President, Captain
of the Varsity Basketball Team, a board member of the Environment Club and National Honor Society and
Co-founder and Vice President of the Care for Survivors Club, a club that gives support to victims of domestic
violence and sex-trafficking. Some of her athletic accomplishments include recipient of the CIF Dr. Jim Staunton’s Champion of Character Award (second in
Saint Joseph history to receive this award) and Lakewood Hall of Fame 2019 Athlete of the Year. Outside of school, she has volunteered her time to be a youth leader and lector. You
might see her reading at the 5:00pm Mass Sunday nights. She plans to attend UCLA in the fall majoring in
Political Science with an emphasis on International Relations.
KINDERGARTEN QUOTES
At the end of the school year, our kindergarteners were asked what they liked best about this school year.
Here’s what they had to say:
Skip G. enjoyed visiting the book fair. When he grows up, Skip wants to be an Army General. He is looking forward
to seeing Coach Flores and jumping rope in the first grade.
Ysabella M. says her favorite thing in kindergarten was when her dad came and volunteered. She also loved story time. Ysabella wants to be a nurse like her mom when she grows up. Ysabella is excited to see her friends at school
again.
Jason J. loved playing with friends, seeing his big buddy, and reading books in kindergarten. When he grows up, Jason wants to be a scientist. In first grade he is looking
forward to learning new things and seeing his friends.
Mya B. loves reading books, singing songs, and playing with friends in kindergarten. This summer she is looking
forward to feasts and playing in the pool. Mya wants to be a pediatrician when she grows up. When summer is over
she wants to see her friends at school.
