AMESSAGEFROMTHEPASTOR

This past week the Governors of Delaware and Maryland have promulgated regulations for opening of places of worship. Based on those regulations, Bishop Malooly has determined a time line over which Sunday and daily masses, may be reintroduced across the Diocese of Wilmington; he has also provided guidelines for the celebration of masses and confessions as well as opportunities for private prayer in our churches.

What I need you all to consider and understand is that closing the churches in mid-March was simply a matter of closing the doors and locking them; however, opening them back up is in initely more dif icult when taking into consideration the need to protect those coming to worship from an on-going virus.

There is no manual that explains how one can arrange people within the pews while keeping them separated by at least six feet from all those who are not their family members or a one-size- its-all procedure for how to move those people into and out of the building quickly while maintaining the same six-foot separation from non-family members.

We like every parish will have to develop plans to safely re-open our doors for our parishioners. We have begun this work for the churches that make up St. Joseph Parish and are preparing the necessary time lines, procedures, and ministerial assistance that will be needed. I will try to keep you updated as we make progress. I ask that you remain patient and keep those who are working in this effort in your prayers.

YoursinChrist,

Msgr.Kelley

Everyone has been affected in some way during the pandemic. One of the most important things we can do to sustain stewardship is to continue to serve the Lord and to love our neighbors. The Knights of Columbus (KOC) continue to humbly demonstrate this through action. The KOC in our parish (Old Bohemia Council) have also experienced impacts, including having to cancel Lenten Dinners because of quarantine. Turning lemons into lemonade, the Knights are donating 7 cases of breaded fish from our Lenten Dinners to the Emmanuel Dining Room in Wilmington and to the Little Sisters of the Poor in Newark. These cases were purchased by two brother knights for a total of $535.50 in donations. Last month, the KOC donated several cases of tilapia, 3 cases of french fries, and several cans of other goods to the Emmanuel Dining Room. The KOC Order worldwide continues to fight the pandemic with the weapons of charity, fraternity, and unity.

2020 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL – SEEING CHRIST

IN THE FACES OF OTHERS “No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is brought to perfection in us.” 1 John 4:14. The Annual Catholic Appeal, with its theme, “Seeing Christ in the Faces of Others” continues throughout our diocese. Funds raised though the Appeal bring hope, comfort, compassion and love into the lives of many people. Appeal supported ministries touch thousands of individuals and families throughout Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore providing essential service that knows no race, no age, no social class, but rather knows only those who come to the Church for help are special in the eyes of Our Lord. Now more than ever, these ministries are needed. Your support demonstrates your compassion and concern for God’s people and your willingness to share your blessings with those in need. During the week of June 1, you may receive a mailing from Bishop Malooly inviting your participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal. For those of you who have given to this year’s Appeal, thank you for your generosity. For those who have not, please prayerfully consider supporting this important effort. In the meantime, you are encouraged to learn more about the Annual Catholic Appeal by visiting www.cdow.org/annualcatholicappeal. Please view the brief video offering inspiring testimony from recipients of featured Appeal supported ministries. The Word in Our Lives Readings for May 31, 2020

Pentecost Sunday

First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. Gospel: John 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENT PREPARATION NEWS!

Registration forms for Religious Education and the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation will be available on the parish website, www.stjosephmiddletown.com on Monday, March 2nd. Religious Education registrations are accepted from registered parishioners on a first-come, first-served basis until August 31, 2020. No registrations will be accepted after August 31, 2020, except from families that are relocating to our parish, moving from their existing religious education program to our program. In order to ensure both the accuracy of our records and the safety of our students, we will be unable to process any registration that does not include all required information, payment, and/or documentation. Incomplete registrations will be returned. If your child has completed grade one, either in our Religious Education program or in Catholic school, and is enrolling in grade two, you must complete a separate form to register for the sacramental preparation program for Reconciliation and Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee. The Confirmation preparation program also has a separate registration form, schedule and fee. In conjunction with the Diocese, we also offer a Special Needs Religious Education program. Contact the Religious Education Office at 302.378.5800, ext. 107 for further information. St. Joseph Parish has one of the largest Religious Education programs in our diocese. We are always in need of volunteers and gratefully welcome those that are willing to share their time, talent and faith. We look forward to working with you and your family.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS God is love but we humans know love through physical, emotional, and intellectual commitment. How does each of you show your love for God and to each other?

PARENTING POINTERS Children will be children which means they will make mistakes, disobey, be selfish... (actually so do we adults). Today reassure your child that you will always love them, no matter what.

Congratulations to our Worthy Chaplain, Fr. Chris Hanley, 12 years a priest and servant to K of C.

Pray with and for Pope Francis’ Intentions for May: that deacons may be an invigorating symbol for the entire Church. Pray especially for the soul of Deacon Tim, also pray for Deacons Mike and Dave.

Challenge from Supreme Chaplain Lori for May: This month I challenge you to write down Psalm 27:1 — “The Lord is my light and my salvation” — put it up where you’ll see it daily and recite it regularly.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY—POSTPONED

The Wednesday Morning Bible Study meets weekly at 9:30 am in the Parish Center. Come join us as we discuss the readings for the upcoming Sundays. Any questions, please call 302-378-5800.

DID YOU KNOW... Easter Sunday is at the center of two forty day periods? There are the forty days of Lent and then on the fortieth day after Easter Sunday, the Church celebrates Christ’s Ascension into heaven. We know the importance of Lent. But what about the next forty days? The first Chapter of Acts, which we read today, tells us Jesus spent forty days with the Apostles speaking of the Kingdom of God. We can only imagine the instructions Jesus gave to them and speculate about their questions and his answers. Scripture does not tell us. But the historical record gives us some clues. The Church now has a structure and a leader on earth. It has a mission and authority. Look at the orders given in the Gospel for today. Jesus’ work on earth is done. Now he asks that mission to continue and take form in the Church. We see the Church is to be universal with the multiple use of the word ALL in the Gospel for today. Then comes the promise of, “I am with you always until the end of the age.” Yes, he is, not just in the Spirit, but always in the Eucharist.
