OUR PARISH MISSIONGPS: God’s Plan of Salvation

Don’t forget to reserve the evenings of November 18th, 19th and 20th (7:00 p.m.) for our Parish Mission as we welcome Father Emmanuel Mansford, a Franciscan Friar from St. Joseph’s Friary in Harlem. (He will be joined by Br. Kolbe Blashock, who will

give a personal testimony and lead some meditations.) Father Mansford was born in London, England. He served as a missionary with NET Ministries from 1995-1998 and joined the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in September 1998. He was ordained in 2007 and spent seven years in the friars’ mission in England. He has been serving as the Vocational Director for the Community since 2014. It certainly has been a whirlwind for me as I have entered into my ninth and last year of formation at St. Mary Seminary. I can’t believe all that has happened and how much I have changed over these last nine years in the seminary.

This year in formation, I have moved past most of the heavy theology and my classes are quite practical – helping to prepare me for Ordination. And I have to say that the load of work is certainly preparing me for the business of priestly life! I have classes in the Sacrament of Penance and Anointing, Bioethics, The English Reformation, Pastoral Counseling, Liturgical Preaching, Prophetic Literature, Pastoral Administration, and Marriage Preparation, all while balancing ministry at St. Raphael. Who knew how much it took to prepare for priesthood?!? Yet – and most importantly – this has been a year of graceful and prayerful preparation. My prayer life has deepened and become more real with each year. This year, I have really focused on Patience and Focus in my prayer. The Father has been teaching me to be patient with myself, especially with ordination around the corner, and to stay focused on Jesus, despite everything that tries to distract.

ALL SOULS:BOOK OF THE NAMES OF THE DECEASEDThe Church has a long tradition of remembering those who have died, and we do this in a special way on the Feast of All Souls Day, November 2nd, and throughout the month of November. In many churches around the world, there is a Book of the Names of the Dead as a continuing reminder of our prayer. We offer this Book of the Names of the Dead in the Church narthex so that we might be in solidarity in prayer for our loved ones. We invite you to enter the names of your deceased loved ones who have died since November 2, 2017.

THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVEThe St. Vincent de Paul Society of our parish is in need of donations to restock their food pantry. They are in most need of the following items: cold cereal, pasta sauces, sloppy-jo sauce, canned fruit, canned chicken, canned tuna, canned corn and green beans, peanut butter, jelly, toilet paper and paper towels. At this time they have an abundance of pasta, canned soup, and ramen noodles so please keep that in mind when doing your shopping. If you are donating from your home pantry, please check expiration dates on food items. If you could bring these items for our usual Thanksgiving Day collection at the 9:30 morning Mass that day, it would be very much appreciated. Also, if you are able, please take the items to your seat with you so that you can present them to the Altar during our offertory procession. And if you’ll be making a monetary donation, please make your check payable to St. Vincent de Paul. Thank you.

LIFT UP YOUR HEARTThe Tenth Meditation – The Election and Choice the Soul Makes of a Devout LifeIn the ninth meditation we compared the anguish of Hell to the beauty of Heaven. Based on that comparison we were asked to choose between the two. There must be more to it than checking off the box titled “Heaven!” Of course, there is! In this final meditation, we look at the life that is directly associated with this choice, as St. Francis calls it “the Devout Life.” For a final time, we are called to use our imaginations. We now examine the lives behind the Final Judgement’s sheep and goats.

Meditation Highlights• Our reaction to social pressure will be the proof of our decision. (128)• This decision requires us to live day-to-day in practical pursuit of Heaven. (128)• Imagine God gives you insight into the heart of every person. You see two kingdoms, one to your left and one to your

right. (128)• To your left you see evil. The principle commonality is their commitment to sin. (129)• In pride they seek to distinguish themselves from each other.• Each longs for power and praise. (129)• You see the weak, the suffering, those with struggles being exploited. (131)• Your heart is rent, not with terror, but with urgent compassion. This sentiment draws you to the kingdom on the right. (130)• Here with Christ crucified as the center, many are helping others, holding up the disabled, or speaking patiently to the

elderly. Laughter reigns, and an air of peace lingers.• Many reach out to comfort and help. Where division rolled there, the unity here is charity. (131)• This choice must be renewed, refreshed, and reinvigorated daily. (132)• Refreshed by grace with trust and great confidence in God, you must now make the choice to set out on the pathway of

charity filled with ardent faith and joy filled hope. (133)

FOCUS: This is a daily commitment to growth through grace. How, in a little way, will I grow today?

Possible Tenth Meditation discussion questions• If this is a choice that I am to make each day then, what step can I take today?• Can you recall 10 key words, one for each meditation?• Can you associate a few thoughts from each of these meditations?• If I make a commitment to meditate on one of these during the day, what simple event or trigger can I use to do so?

GIFTS OF IRA AND STOCKSWill you have increased income as a result of the new tax changes? Perhaps you can consider increasing your offertory contribution to our parish. Changes in the tax law kept in place several popular and attractive charitable gifting options. Gifting appreciated stock (held more than 1 year) to St. Francis may allow you to deduct the stock’s full value and bypass capital gains tax. Also, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to reduce your taxable income this year with a gift more directly from your IRA to St. Francis. Talk to your advisors and IRA administrator for more information and to be sure that a gift is made directly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as St. Francis de Sales. Questions? Contact our parish office at 330-644-2225. You are also welcome to contact Mary Lou Ozimek of the Catholic Community Foundation at 216-696-6525, ext. 4070 or [email protected].

WOMEN’S DAY OF REFLECTIONThe Virgin Mary is Theotokos, or God Bearer. This title is especially appropriate during Advent, which is a season of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas, as well as the return of Jesus at the second coming. Come to our 9th annual Day of Reflection on Saturday, December 1st and explore how we too might be “God Bearers” in the world today. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until 1:30 p.m. Place your reservation in the collection basket or drop it off or mail it to the parish office no later than November 26. Space is limited. The cost is $10.00 and includes lunch.

“Save me a seat. I’ll be there!”
