CHRISTMAS
The Anchor
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. You have brought them
abundant joy and great rejoicing,!” (Is 9:1-2a).
Prophecies like the one we find in this passage from Isaiah, read in the Liturgy of the Word of the Mass of the Night of the Nativity of Our Lord, speak to our heart. Light, as we now know, travels fast, and yet it takes centuries for the light of some stars to come to us. We have to wait even to see the light of the stars. In all of us a lives a distinct sense of hope and expectation, a desire, that sometimes is spoken but most of the times remains in the background, a bit hidden and forgotten, but never for too long. It emerges and re-emerges at different moments in life: when things are very good and we express our hope and prayer that they can remain like this as long as possible, maybe forever; this desire becomes a prayer, oftentimes. And when things are difficult, our desire for goodness erupts and becomes prayer even faster. We ask for that light to come and chase the darkness away, so that we can look and see our face, look and find the faces of the people we love, so that we can reach them. When there is light enough to see them, we might even remember that they are a gift to us. And if the people we love are light and gifts to us; who gave them to us? And who gives us the light that we need to appreciate all this? Why there is goodness and light and good people we can love and love us? Whom can we thank? To whom are we pray, when we pray for that light to come and never abandon us, and those we love? Christmas has to do with all this. It has to do with how our heart, the human heart, works. It has to do with how our heart is set to a frequency of love and desire and can be fulfilled, in the end, only by the One who shaped our heart in that way. We can say that this is the “law” of the human heart. That baby that came to Mary and Joseph, two thousand years ago came to “fulfill” the law of the human heart, to be the light that illumines everything good, to be the Emmanuel, God With Us. Merry Christmas, dear friends. Fr. Stefano, Fr. Paolo, Fr. Luca
