From Our Pastor:From Our Pastor:Every Sunday and solemnity in the Church, we profess the Faith as we recite the

Nicene Creed� Based on the Apostles’ Creed and given to the Church by God through two Church councils in 325 and 381 A�D�, the Nicene Creed states that we believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church� In light of today’s Gospel ( Jesus says, “And I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it�” Matthew 16:13-20), it is worth reviewing these four marks or pillars of the Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Part One, ##26-1065; the Catechism also has many references to Holy Scripture):

We are one because the Church’s source is the one and only God� There can therefore only be one true Church, one mystical Body of Christ, founded by Jesus, who restores unity between creation and the Creator� We believe in: one faith, rebirth in one Baptism, only one Body, and that it is given life by the one Spirit�

We are holy because Christ Himself founded the Church as His bride� He gave Him-self up to make her holy� At Pentecost, the Spirit of holiness gives her life� Since she still includes sinners, she is “the sinless one made up of sinners�” Her holiness shines in the saints; in Mary she is already all-holy� It is through the Church and the Holy Spirit that the grace of God is distributed� We need that grace to be saved� We, likewise, are called to become holy!

We are catholic (universal) because the Church contains the fullness of the faith, which includes all seven Sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, the Holy Eucharist, Holy Mat-rimony, Holy Orders, Confession, and Anointing of the Sick) – this fullness is expressed in the Roman Catholic Church� (Other Christian ecclesial communities share partially in this fullness, as they have: retained baptism as a Sacrament, but do not have the other six Sacraments; broken apostolic succession; an incomplete Old Testament, lacking seven books and parts of other books from the Hebrew Scriptures)� The Church bears in her-self and administers the totality of the means of salvation� She is sent out to all peoples everywhere� She speaks to all people and encompasses all times� She is missionary of her very nature� We likewise are called to assent to this fullness of the universal truths she offers and to be missionary, to “Go Make Disciples,” as Bishop Donald Hying has said�

We are apostolic because the Church was built on the twelve apostles, by Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit� The Church is therefore indestructible (Matthew 16:13-20)� She is upheld infallibly in the truth because Christ governs her through Peter and the other apostles, who are present in their successors, the Pope and the college of bishops in union with him� This is, by definition, the Magisterium of the Church�

If we fall short of believing these pillars of the Church, we will find it difficult to be as sincere as possible when we profess the Faith on Sundays and solemnities� God calls us to accept not just one, or only some, of these marks� In giving us the Creed, He calls us to believe them all, in an illuminated faith� Similarly, we would be wise to always take an honest look at those beliefs that we might question and to look deeper, so as to reconcile ourselves to the fullness of the faith of Christ’s Church, and never the other way around� In joyful and loving obedience, then, may we continue to profess the faith that God has given us, in word and deed, as we follow Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for He is the way, the Truth and the life, yesterday, today and forever, the Only Savior of the world�

GRANT COUNTY RIGHT TO LIFE MATCHING GIFT

It may seem intimidating to preach Jesus Christ in our culture� It may seem like everything is working against that message as we face the headwinds of a culture that blow directly against what the Lord has to offer� But, that challenge is precisely our opportunity� We have to set sail in a new way, harnessing the current headwinds and turning them to our advantage� Yes, so much in the world runs

contrary to God’s plan, and that’s precisely why the world needs all the more to hear the Good News�”

HAPPY FEAST OF ST. BARTHOLOMEW!Did you know that we have, in a sense, a secondary patron saint

of our parish? This would be Saint Bartholomew, one of the twelve Apostles, whose feast day is on August 24� In fact, St� Bartholomew was the original patron saint of the parish! When the first Catholic church was built in Lancaster in 1859, one block east from our present church, it had a stone over the entrance of the church that read, “ST� BARTHOLOMEW, PRAY FOR US�” (This stone can still be seen in the hallway wall directly opposite of the parish office door)� When Bishop John Henni of Milwaukee (we were part of the Diocese of Milwaukee at that time) came to Lancaster in 1860 to consecrate the new church, he remarked that there were already a number of churches in the diocese under the patronage of St� Bartholomew� Because of this, he decided that the patron of the parish should be changed to St� Clement� May we not forget our roots and our heritage, and our first patron saint� SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, PRAY FOR US!

FAMILY PROMISE UPDATEIt’s been a while since we have updated you regarding Family

Promise� Looking back, we had a host week for two families in mid-March, just prior to the COVID shut-down� Just four weeks later in April, we hosted again, serving the same two families, but we only needed to provide meals in the evening, as well as a few other food items� Because these two host weeks were only a month apart, our most recent host week was July 12-18� Both families were able to find housing in June, and no new families entered the program, so we did not need to call upon our terrific volunteers� Our next host week will be October 11-18� As we get closer to that date, we will inform you of our needs�

FOOD PANTRY NEWSThank you to those who volunteered from our parish this past

week at the LAC Food Pantry! However, we are always looking for more volunteers� With COVID concerns, many of those who have volunteered in the past fall into the at-risk group of people� The Food Pantry has changed its operations to keep everyone as safe as possible, with volunteers having zero to very limited contact with patrons� To volunteer or for more information, please contact Karen Kilcoyne at 723-6660� This is a great service opportunity for 8th grade and older students as well, preferably along with a parent�

OPEN HOUSE & FIRST DAY OF SCHOOLJust a reminder:

Saint Clement School families should return their completed registration packets to school as soon as possible if it has not been done already. Please call the school office if you have any questions or need assistance. As we mentioned before, we are planning on safely and prudently re-opening Saint Clement School on Wednesday, August 26th with face-to-face and virtual options. We are also planning on a revised Open House from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 24th. School families will be receiving more details about their recommended times for safely visiting school to drop off supplies, meet their teachers and help prepare for the first day of school. As always, we thank you for your continued prayers and support for our wonderful parish school!!!
