Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time People of Our Parish

9:30 AM † Catherine & Francis Richgels

From Our Pastor:From Our Pastor:In the Gospel for this Sunday (Matthew 23:15-21), Jesus Christ instructs us to give

to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God In other words, as we obey the laws of our country (giving to Caesar what belongs to him), we do not allow such obedience to compromise our love and respect for Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and His teachings For example, we pay taxes and for health insurance, but we do not have to allow such funds to pay for the killing of pre-born children, even when some of the political leaders in our country try to force us to do so In the face of such attacks on our religious liberty, we have a duty to defend ourselves – indeed, our moral conscience that is formed and informed by Jesus and His Church should be respected by government leaders In the midst of a secular world, God calls us to be holy and courageous witnesses to His Gospel of life, witnesses to His love and mercy, as Bishop Donald Hying invites us to do in his initiative for our diocese, “Go Make Disciples,” and as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI reminds us in the following Message for World Mission Sunday, 2006:

“Unless our mission is oriented by charity, that is, unless it springs from a profound act of divine love, it risks being reduced to mere philanthropic and social activity In fact, God’s love for every person constitutes the heart of the experience and proclamation of the Gospel, and those who welcome it in turn become its witnesses”

“God’s love, which gives life to the world, is the love that was given to us in Jesus, the Word of salvation, perfect icon of the Heavenly Father’s mercy”

“The saving message can be summed up well, therefore, in the words of John the Evangelist: ‘In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him’ (1 John 4:9)”

“It was after His Resurrection that Jesus gave the apostles the mandate to proclaim the news of this love, and the apostles, inwardly transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, began to bear witness to the Lord who had died and was risen Ever since, the Church has continued this same mission, which is the indispensable and ongoing commitment of all believers…”

“The generous readiness of disciples of Christ to undertake works of human and spiritual advancement draws vigor literally from the awareness of this common mission, faithfulness to divine love… Consequently, being missionaries means loving God with all one’s heart, even to the point, if necessary, of dying for Him… Being missionaries means stooping down to the needs of all, like the Good Samaritan, especially those of the poorest and most destitute people, because those who love with Christ’s Heart do not seek their own interests, but the glory of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and the good of their neighbor alone”

With peace and prayers in Christ,Fr. William

SAINT CLEMENT SCHOOL

GO MAKE DISCIPLES: THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAYERAccording to the artist [ Jean-Francois

Millet], this painting [L’Angelus] portrays a peasant couple working in the fields who, upon hearing the bells of the church ringing for 6pm, take a moment to pray the Angelus at the end of the work day This painting reveals something about what it means to pursue holiness in our daily lives There is a certain humble sincerity in their demeanor They are ordinary working-class people who have stopped what they were doing—the mundane tasks of the day—and took time to pray, even though they must be very tired at the end of the day’s work Their commitment to prayer shows their sense of reverence and awe before God There is something compelling about their spirituality in the midst of a very human life The image shows that their devotion to the Lord is not limited to when they are kneeling in the church on Sundays By stopping to pray in that place where they work, they are sanctifying that space and those tasks by inviting God there The dusky evening atmosphere of the painting reminds us not to allow the sun to set without taking time to stop and pray “At the end of the day,” so to speak, the one thing—the only thing—that really matters is my relationship with the Lord And so we have to ask ourselves: Have I placed Jesus Christ and my relationship with him at the center of my day, my week, my work, my whole life? ~ from the “Go Make Disciples” October Newsletter

IN MEMORIAMPlease remember in your prayers this week Victoria “Vicci” Rhoden,

a former member of our parish, who died from cancer at the young age of 43 on October 9, whose funeral Mass was offered on October 16 Vicci is the daughter of Bob & Jan Schmidt In 2004, Vicci married Jason Rhoden and together they were raising three children She and her family lived in Las Vegas for a number of years, and returned to Platteville in 2015 In doing so, Vicci became part of the family business at Gasser Hardware, managing the HR department She was a vibrant woman who loved family photography, movies, road trips and most of all her beautiful family She was a member at St Mary Parish in Platteville, but she expressed that her services be held at St Clement, as so many of her life events took place at our parish and in Lancaster Vicci fought her cancer bravely, and trusted in God deeply As we pray for her, may we also pray for her husband Jason, her children Noah, Nathan and Leigha, her parents, brothers and all of her family and friends in this time of sorrow May they know the compassion and comfort of the Lord, and the support of our prayers “Eternal rest grant unto Victoria, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. May her soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
