A.D.: THE BIBLE CONTINUES – This week in Episode 11 enti-tled, “I Say to You. Arise!” we see St. Philip being told by an angel to take the desert road to Gaza. Also St. James negotiates peace between the Christians and

the Temple. This week’s discussion question: The Bible tells of how the disciple Tabitha fell sick and died (Acts 9:36). Under what circumstances does she die in this epi-sode? How does the episode plot differ from Scripture?

580-St. Cecilia

My dear parishioners, In our celebration of the Lord’s Day we mark the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today’s Responsorial Psalm we sing the words of Psalm 92, verse 2, “Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.” How fitting it is to express our gratitude to the Lord on the Sabbath for all that He has done for us. All of us have been blessed by God and in particular for the gift of His Only Begotten Son who suffered greatly for us

and has become the promise of eternal life for all who trust in Him. From the beginning of salvation history God’s people have gathered to celebrate the Sabbath and to offer sacrifice to God. We still do this today! When we come to celebrate the Eucharist on the Lord’s Day we also come bringing our offering. This offering is a sacrifice and this sacrifice is used for the purpose of maintaining the Church’s presence in our world. As your pastor I am always concerned about our observance of the Lord’s Day and our weekly participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The summer vacation months are especially challenging because almost everyone goes away for some well deserved rest and recreation. I remind you that our obligation to celebrate the Lord’s Day does not cease with vacation time. This obligation continues to bind us to the Lord’s Day and the offering of thanks to God, which is good! Finding a Catholic Church and its Mass times is easy today because of the internet. So when you are not at home with us you should be with other vacationers attending Holy Mass at the local Catholic parish. I remind you that missing Mass (without a justified reason according to Canon Law) is a SIN and this grave condition must be absolved in the sacrament of penance prior to receiving Holy Communion. In addition to thanking the Lord with our praise it is important to worship Him with our offering. Again, as your pastor, I also have the burden of overseeing the temporal management of the parish. The material needs of the parish are constant and unrelenting. The finance council of both Saint Cecilia and Sacred Heart of Jesus parishes meet with me regularly to advise me on the fiscal status of the parish. I am very concerned about the financial condition of the parish(s). Improvement needs to happen now so that we do not find ourselves in a very sorry state in the coming months. This weekend at Saint Cecilia Church and next weekend at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, I will be speaking briefly at Mass regarding the increase of Sunday offerings and the promotion of our on line donation service called PARISH PAY. I am hoping that with more parishioners enrolling on the on line donation system we can increase our Sunday offerings, especially when parishioners are on vaca-tion or any other reason which prevents them from attending Sunday Mass with us. I remind you, my beloved, of how important it is to sing each week, LORD, IT IS GOOD TO GIVE THANKS TO YOU! I ALSO ASK YOU, please consider increasing you Sunday offering,” a dollar a week is just not enough!” Please take a few moments and read the information in today’s bulletin regarding PARISH PAY. Prayerfully consider what sacrifice you can offer to the Lord. It is very important that you respond positively to these very serious concerns which I have shared with you. You have always supported our church and you do so joyfully because of your faith in Christ our Savior. I beg you in His Name, please help us! God bless you! Father Zig

ST. JOHN FRANCIS REGIS, Priest June 16-Patron of Medical Social Workers

This Saint was a descendant of the nobility of Languedoc, France, where he was born in 1597. He was edu-cated at the Jesuit college of Beziers, and in his nineteenth year he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Toulouse, taking his vows two years later. After finishing his course in philosophy in 1621, he was sent to teach the classics in several colleges. He began his study of theology at Toulouse in 1628; in 1639, he was ordained a priest, and the following year, having finished his studies, he made his Third Probation. He was now fully prepared fo his lifework and entered upon his apostolic career in the summer of 1631. Two years later he went to the diocese of Viviers at the invitation of the Bishop, giving missions over the whole diocese. He labored diligently, for both priests and people, and numerous conversions resulted. Crosses which followed the Saint, as the shadow follows the body, were not wanting, but he turned them to his spiritual advantage. St. Francis longed to devote himself to the conversion of the Indians in Canada, but Divine Providence kept him in France until his death. Incredible were the hardships he endured on his apostolic journeys over rugged mountains in the depth of winter, but nothing could arrest his zeal. He died in 1640 and was canonized in 1737 by Pope Clement XII, PRAYER: Almighty, eternal God, You dedicated the joy of this day to the glorification of St. John. Mercifully grant that we may strive to retain and complete by our works that Faith which he continually proclaimed with insatiable zeal. Amen Taken from, Lives of the Saints, Catholic Booking Publishing Company, 1999 New Jersey
