News Around Saint Bruno . . . .

“Summertime and the living is easy.” That’s what the

favorite old song says. The living may be easy, but often the giving is not. Summer collections often drop signifi-cantly in our parish because of vacation travel, sports schedules and other activities that cause parishioners to attend Mass in other parishes. If you would like to make your giving easy and consistent this summer, please con-sider our electronic giving option. Currently 16 parish families are using this simple and secure way to make and track their parish giving. If you would like to learn more, please contact Amy at the Parish Office, 724-836-0690.

Save the Date - Our Annual Family Picnic will be held on

Saturday, August 26 beginning at 6 p.m. after our 5 p.m. Mass. Please watch the bulletin in coming weeks for more information.

Interested in sharing your faith this Fall with fellow pa-

rishioners here at Saint Bruno? We would like to start a

gathering to discuss our faith, the bible and how we can

help our world today. Once a week in the morning hours

we would like to meet in the Parish Center. Anyone inter-

ested in helping to start this ministry please contact Amy

at the Parish Office, 724-836-0690.

"The Son of Man will send his angels, and they

will collect out of his kingdom all who cause oth-

ers to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them

into the fiery furnace, where there will be wail-

ing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will

shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Fa-

ther." - Mt 13:41-43a

LITURGICAL ROLES

THIS WEEK

The Lord’s Laughter

“A joyful heart is a good medicine, but a broken

spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

A man and his wife went on vacation to Jerusalem.

While they were there, the wife passed away. The

undertaker told the husband, “You can have her

shipped home for $5,000, or you can bury her here in

the Holy Land for $150.” The man thought about it

and told him he would have her shipped home. The

undertaker asked, “Why would you spend $5,000 to

ship your wife home, when it would be wonderful to

be buried here and you could spend only $150?”

The man replied, “Long ago a man died here, was bur-

ied here, and three days later he rose from the dead. I

just can’t take that chance.”

WEEKLY MASS SCHEDULE

"The weeds are the children of

the evil one, and the enemy who

sows them is the devil." This is

not a pretty picture. Jesus

shares a parable in today's Gos-

pel that reminds us of a truth

we would rather forget: evil is

real, and the devil is at work.

The bountiful harvest of our

faith is something that Satan

wants to destroy. And he has a host of diabolical tactics

to help him carry out his wicked plans. But there is one

strategy in particular that we must be on guard against.

As the French poet Charles Baudelaire put it, "The dev-

il's finest trick is to persuade you that he does not exist."

Sneaky as it may be, this approach is effective! And, un-

fortunately, the attitude of our modern era is very con-

ducive to buying the lie. Too often we dismiss the idea of

the invisible spiritual reality of angels and demons. It

doesn't seem "scientific" enough for us because it can't be

seen or "proven." But neither can our faith! We believe

in a host of invisible realities starting with God himself.

We should not be fooled into thinking that the devil is a

make-believe cartoon character with red horns and a

pitchfork on his shoulder. Alas, no. As the Catechism of

the Catholic Church reminds us, "Scripture witnesses to

the disastrous influence of the one Jesus calls 'a murder-

er from the beginning'" (CCC 394) and, as we read in the

Bible, "Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy

the works of the Devil" (1 Jn 3:8). This is not pretend,

and so it must be taken seriously. But so too, the reality

of Satan must be situated within the broader context of

God's supreme power. The devil "cannot prevent the

building up of God's reign" (CCC 395). The influence of

evil can never defeat the power of our faith, unless we

let it do so.
