through Mary. In fact, six parishes in our Archdiocese have been dedicated to her as the Woman of Sorrows. Suffering is real. Suffering counts. In our experiences of suffering, heartbreak and loss, God can be drawing us more into His pierced and broken Heart through the pierced and broken heart of Mary (see Luke 2:34-36). Mary as our Mother of Sorrows is someone we can go to in our sorrows. Sorrows can become bridges, ways of connecting with and helping others in their sorrows. As Leonard Cohen sang, “Ring the bells that still can ring; Forget your perfect offering; There’s a crack in everything; That’s how the Light gets in.”
ROOTS - We are enriched when we keep a vital connection with our roots. At sunset this Friday (Sept. 18) our Jewish friends will mark the start of the year 5781 with the celebration of
Rosh Hashanah (“The Head of the Year”). This feast will commence the ten Days of Awe that will culminate on September 27 with Yom Kippur (“The Day of Atonement”).
SPECIAL COLLECTION This weekend we will join with the other Catholics of our nation in a collection for the support of the Archdiocese for the
Military Services USA which provide the Catholic Church’s pastoral ministries and spiritual services to the United States Armed Forces and their dependents. Please make out any checks to “St. Ann Parish”. For more information check our parish bulletin boards, homepage or visit http://www.milarch.org
If today (Sept. 13) were not a Sunday we would be celebrating the Memorial of St. John Chrysostom (d. 407 A.D.) a Doctor of the Church who taught:
“Do you wish to honor the body of Christ? Do not ignore him when he is naked. Do not pay him homage in the temple clad in silk, only then to neglect him outside where he is cold and ill-clad. He who said: "This is my body" is the same who said: "You saw me hungry and you gave me no food", and "Whatever you did to the least of my brothers you did also to me"... What good is it if the Eucharistic table is overloaded with golden chalices when your brother is dying of hunger? Start by satisfying his hunger and then with what is left you may adorn the altar as well.”
CROSS PURPOSES - Why is it that each year on September 14th (tomorrow) we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross? The number 40 occurs many times in
scripture, for instance: Noah in the ark for 40 days; Israel in the desert for 40 years; Jesus fasting in the desert for 40 days; the Ascension 40 days after the Resurrection; etc. Well, tomorrow will be the 40th day since August 6 when we celebrated the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. In our Tradition Glory and the Cross are always connected. As we head into a heightened political season it can be helpful to remember that in every culture and in every age, to stand with Christ will at times put us at cross-purposes with the dominant culture and its current values. As we pray each Lent, "See how the Cross of the Lord stands revealed as the Tree of Life!"
MOTHER OF SORROWS This Tuesday (Sept. 15) we will celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows, a title under which many people are drawn to Jesus

Partners in Faith: Helping our children grow in their
Catholic faith.
September 2020
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Archdiocese for the Military Services was established by Saint John Paul II in 1985 to provide a full range of Catholic pastoral ministries to those in the United States Armed Forces.
The mission of the Archdiocese is to “serve those who serve” by offering pastoral care to Catholics serving in the U.S. military, enrolled in the nation's service academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers in the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam, working in civilian jobs for the federal government beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations. The Archdiocese and its priests and deacons are responsible for pastoral service to approximately 1.8 million Catholics. However, unlike a conventional diocese, the Archdiocese has no parishes or parish registries and no weekly collections. It relies solely on the generosity of private donations to support its programs and services.
Last year, Pope Francis told military ordinaries from around the world that “The role of military chaplains is to accompany and support [those in need] on the journey, to be a comforting and brotherly presence for them all.” Your support of the Archdiocese for the Military Services will bring the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual support to men and women who serve our country and defend our freedoms, including many individuals and families who hail from our own Greater Philadelphia region.
The collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, which was to be conducted during Lent but was postponed due to the suspension of Masses, will now be conducted in your parish on the weekend of September 12 and 13, 2020. I ask your continued prayers and generous financial support for this important collection.
Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ,
+Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, D.D
“BLOCK COLLECTION” - Why is our September Collection for the parish called the “Block” Collection? Years ago, every fall the priests in all the parishes in our Archdiocese would visit each home, block by block, to check in personally with each household, update census data, bless the home, and collect an envelope. Nowadays this fall collection is one of our three special collections (along with Christmas and Easter) that we depend upon annually. Perhaps it is time to change the name of this annual fall appeal, but for now maybe we can just accept it as we accept terms such as “blackboards” that are no longer black or “taping” sermons when no tape is involved. BTW, once we get beyond the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic, if you would like to arrange a home visit and/or house blessing by one of our parish clergy, please contact the parish office and we’ll be glad to arrange a visit.

Office. Put the date your casserole was prepared on the cover of each dish. Frozen casseroles are due Wednesday, September 30 by 10 AM on the back porch of the Parish Office.
Prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle;
be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and the other evil spirits
who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Streaming to the "Mass"es
Since March, we have been fortunate to have Deacon Giblin livestream our Masses on Facebook Live. This has been a great worship aid to those unable to attend in person. Since we expect to continue livestreaming for the foreseeable future, we are looking to relieve our resident "camera-Deacon" from this task. If you are interested, and are 18 or older, and have basic computer skills, please contact the parish office (610-933-3732).
