GOOD FRIDAY ANNUAL COLLECTION HOLY LAND PEOPLE & PLACES
The Annual Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land is an appeal for funds to support the people and places in the lands where Jesus lived. Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land have been in charge of holy sites in the Middle East for the past eight centuries. Prefect of the Congregation, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, described the Lenten season as “an itinerary of solidarity”; we are called “to pause and, like the Good Samaritan, accompany our brethren who for many reasons find it difficult to stand up and continue their journey”. In order to assist Christians to remain in the Holy Land, including the poor and young couples, the Custody builds thousands of residential units and senior care facilities. Medical assistance is provided for the needy. As for Holy places, both the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem have been recently restored, “thanks to the collaboration and the generosity of so many persons of good will”. The Annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. The Holy Land Franciscans are counting on our financial help to assist them in providing presence, care and service. Please be as generous as your abundance allows.

PASCHAL FAST - Honor Jesus’ Suffering and Death for us... In preparation for Easter, penitential practices, such as fasting and abstinences, are encouraged by the Church. Reminder: Good Friday is a day of both Fast and Abstinence. The “Paschal Fast” begins on Good Friday and continues until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as to honor the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. On a day of Fast, only 1 full meal is permitted, and 2 smaller meals, which, if added together would not exceed the main meal in quantity. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.
SCRIPTURAL REFLECTION PALM SUNDAY March 25, 2018 “Pilate again said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And they cried out again, ‘Crucify him.’” Mk 15:12-13 Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help.
PRAYER for VOCATIONS Good and gracious God, You have called us through Baptism to discipleship with your Son, Jesus Christ, and have sent us to bring the Good News of salvation to all peoples. Inspire our young men and women by the example of Blessed Junipero Serra to give themselves totally to the work of Christ and His Church.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen! JOIN US in DAILY PRAYER for VOCATIONS Please pray one OUR FATHER, one HAIL MARY, one GLORY BE for an increase in vocations for the

Afterwards, refreshments will be served in the chapel garden, weather permitting. ALL ARE WELCOME!!
DIVINE MERCY: Message and Devotion The message of The Divine Mercy is simple: God loves us – all of us. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering A – B – C:
A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world.
B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us.
C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.
This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun, who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God's mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread. The message and devotional practices proposed in the Diary of Saint Faustina are completely in accordance with the teachings of Church and are firmly rooted in the Gospel message of our Merciful Savior. Properly understood and implemented, they will help us grow as genuine followers of Christ. Spend time to learn more about the mercy of God, learn to trust in Jesus and live your life as merciful to others, as Christ is merciful to you. For more information, please visit: www.thedivinemercy.org/message JESUS I TRUST in YOU!!
The Easter Triduum The Easter Triduumbegins on the evening of Holy Thursday and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday. The word ‘Triduum’ comes from two Latin words which mean “three days”. Why do we speak of a period of three days when we have four days with special names – Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday? On all high festival days, the Church counts a day in the same way as the Jewish faith counts days and festivals – from sundown to sundown. For us as Catholics, however, the TRIDUUM is liturgically ONE celebration. Therefore,The Easter Triduumbegins at sundown on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, continues with the celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday and concludes with the day of the Lord’s Resurrection, which includes the Easter Vigil.
Holy Thursday On Holy Thursday, we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, which includes the Washing of Feet. The Last Supper was a meal of unity, love and shared life; it was there that the disciples bound themselves to follow Christ wherever He went. Through our participation in this liturgy, we too bind ourselves to follow Jesus in His death and resurrection. It was also at the Last Supper that Jesus instituted the Eucharist for the Church. Each time we celebrate the Eucharist we participate in the death and resurrection of Jesus and commit ourselves to be His disciples. The Washing of Feet is a sign to us, as it was to His disciples that night, of the service we are called to live. This Mass ends without a final blessing because our celebration has not ended. Instead, we process with the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose. All are invited to spend time in Adoration, keeping watch with Jesus as we prepare for Good Friday.
Good Friday Good Friday is the only day of the year when the Roman Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass. It is a day of fasting and abstinence. We celebrate the LORD’s PASSION in the afternoon. We stand and listen as the PASSION of JESUS is proclaimed and we remember how He suffered and died for our sins. We also participate in the VENERATION of the CROSS by kneeling or bowing before the cross, by kissing it or by touching it respectfully. We do this to acknowledge the cross as the means of our salvation. Also on Good Friday we use the expanded form of General Intercessions. We pray the ten intercessions that are prayed by the entire Church: for the Church, for Christian unity, for the Jewish people, for those who do not believe in God or in Christ, for those in public office and for people who are suffering or experiencing difficulties in their lives. These prayers recognize the universality of our Church and the need for us to be aware of faiths different from our own.
Easter Vigil The Easter Vigil, the highest point of our Liturgical year, is held on the evening of Holy Saturday. Again, we celebrate as one people united in God’s love. It is a celebration which takes place at night, when it is dark, to emphasize that we are keeping vigil for the coming Resurrection! The darkness also emphasizes the beautiful symbolism in the lighting of the new fire and the passing of the flame from person to person, signaling the LIGHT of CHRIST moving among us and lighting our lives. In this we are called to take the LIGHT of CHRIST into the world. The readings and psalms walk us through our history, each building on the last, until the Gospel, which proclaims Jesus has truly Risen! The welcoming of our brothers and sisters into the Catholic faith is a beautiful symbol of the endurance of our faith and the hope for our future. The LITURGY of the EUCHARIST is triumphant on this night for Jesus has truly Risen and given us the gifts of His love and joy, His very Self!
The EASTER TRIDUUM is the telling of our story; a reminder of what Jesus has done for us and given to us. We are called to enter into The EASTER TRIDUUM whole-heartedly. We celebrate the essential mystery of our Christian faith: Jesus’ triumph over death and our own participation in the Resurrection. We come together in a special way to remember the saving act of Jesus and the miracle of His Resurrection as we celebrate our faith and identity as Christians. Can we make time in our busy schedules to spend with Jesus this Easter, to watch, wait and pray?
