Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Reflecting on the wonderful welcome you all gave me last weekend as I began my service to you as pastor, I’m reminded of the old song:
Oh Home on the Range, where the deer and the antelope play, and where seldom is heard a discouraging word, and the skies are not cloudy all day!
Well, I only noticed one deer, but no antelope, and the skies were only “ok” Saturday and Sunday, but as for the rest, not only did I not hear a “discouraging word,” but rather I experienced so much enthusiasm, hopefulness, and positive disposition toward the future.
The challenges of these recent years are, of course, quite real, and we will not paper over the past, but nonetheless, it is still so important to approach the future with enthusiasm and hope in the Lord! And it is that disposition that struck me profoundly last weekend.
I don’t have much to report for this week, except I’m trying to get unpacked, and get things set up in the office. The staff has been terrific in trying to get me moved in and oriented to so many things. Likewise, I’ve tried to visit many groups, and there is lots more of that to do before I get the hang of who is who and what is what!
In our gospel today we hear Jesus tell the disciples (and of course that means He’s also telling you and me!): “You are the light of the world,” and so we are! So we’ll work hard together with that light to “set it on a lampstand, where it gives light to all”!
God bless you all! Fr. Joe
