PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Dear parishioners:

I hope you know well the history of our parish. From the beginning, when Fr. James Smyth bought a two-family house at the corner of 49th Street and 7th Avenue in 1912 to offer Mass on the first floor while the second floor served as his living quarters; to the 1920s, when Msgr. Martin Fitzpatrick built the school, convent and rectory; to 1939, when the Upper Church was erected under the direction of Msgr. John B. Lyle; to the 1960s, when Fr. James A. Sullivan constructed the present convent; to 1982, when Fr. Vincent F. MacKenna completed Our Lady’s Chapel in the Lower Church; to the 1990s, when Bishop Paul Sanchez undertook major renovations; to this very day, our parish has been blessed with grace upon grace.

From the first wave of Norwegian, Italian and Irish settlers, to the arrival of Spanish-speaking immigrants, to the present-day Chinese newcomers, the Parish of Saint Agatha has rejected no one. With open arms and hearts, we have been welcoming everyone into our midst to worship our one true God under our one same roof. Whether they are spiritually hungry, psychologically lost, physically weary, or simply looking for a place to call home, there is a seat waiting for them in our church.

As we begin the 105th year of our parish, we pause to give praise to Almighty God and to thank Saint Agatha for her patronage all these years. Please take time to attend our novena to Saint Agatha each night this week. Next Sunday, February 5, the feast day of Saint Agatha, Bishop Raymond Chappetto will celebrate a solemn trilingual Mass with us at 12:15 PM, followed by a reception of international foods in Kelly Hall. Please join together in celebrating this special moment in the history of our parish.

BLESSING OF THROATS

On Friday, February 3, in honor of St. Blaise who healed a child choking on a fish bone, the priest will bless everyone’s throat after the 8:45 AM Mass in the Convent Chapel.

This Thursday, February 2, at 11:00 AM, our Chinese parishioners will observe a Holy Hour in the Convent Chapel. On Friday, February 3, our Spanish-speaking parishioners will stay in the Upper Church from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM to adore the Blessed Sacrament. On Saturday, February 4, our English-speaking parishioners will have a First Saturday Devotion after the 8:45 AM Mass in the Convent Chapel. All are invited to our three days of devotions.

YOUTH RETREAT
