Build A Better Rate Contest! This summer, Westoba is running the Build a Better Rate Contest to show how much we value our relationship with you.

Members who build themselves a better rate through relationship pricing can win $250 cash! Who doesn’t need a little extra green stuff to help with summer DIY projects or pay for gas for a boat trip on the lake?!

For the months of July and August, there will be 10 winners from a random draw selected! Don’t miss your chance to pad your pockets a little. Call 1-877-WESTOBA or visit a branch to start talking about what relationship pricing can do for you!

Westoba is helping members build themselves better rates. It’s a simple approach we call relationship pricing. We believe that good banking is about putting members first, not sales.

Westoba has financial solutions that support your life. We put the pieces together to give you a full package.

Life is jam packed with exciting milestones. Whether it’s buying your first car (or helping

your kids buy their first car), to purchasing a new home; or welcoming a new family member to your current home Westoba is your trusted partner that celebrates big life events with you.

Relationship pricing is built for you, our member, and it all starts with a conversation. Call us at 1-877-WESTOBA or stop by one of our branches to learn more.

This past April, Premier Greg Selinger presented Donna Morken from Rivers with a Premier’s Volunteer Service Award. Donna has been involved with Westoba on a number of levels. This includes being a long time member, partnering on community projects and as wife of Westoba Board Director Al Morken.

“I was very honoured to be nominated and chosen for the award as there are many volunteers across the Province who work to make their communities a better place to live.” Donna Morken, Volunteer Service Award Recipient.

The Volunteer Service Awards are presented during National Volunteer Week in April. The awards are given to honour the efforts and dedication of outstanding volunteers in Manitoba, and to recognize and encourage the valuable services performed by volunteers.

Krista Reynolds, Principal of

Rivers Elementary School, recognized Donna’s commitment to community, her inspiration and leadership to others and nominated her for this award. Donna has been involved with many hometown projects and committees such as the Rivers Train Station Restoration Project, the Riverdale District Health Auxiliary, the Rivers Legion Ladies Auxiliary and currently president of the Rivers & Area Community Foundation. Through Donna’s passion for her community, she has obtained funding to assist in the completion of large and small projects and the beautification of the community.

Donna Morken’s leadership, passion and enthusiasm are characteristics that drive her. She continues to inspire others to get involved and transform the communities they live in.

Congratulations Donna on your recent, well deserving, accomplishment!

Westoba Sponsors John's Excellent Bike Adventure...

This past June, 78-year-old John Wichers embarked on a Western Canadian solo bike tour. This adventure has been on John’s “Bucket List” for many years, and now he is taking on the challenge of a lifetime.

Starting June 10th, John biked from Vancouver, British Columbia through the Rocky Mountains and picturesque plains of Alberta and Saskatchewan to his hometown

of Winnipeg, Manitoba in 28 days. And he’s done it all for a great cause – to help fund 10 bikes for 10 kids living with special needs and disabilities.

John believes every child should have the opportunity to ride a bike and enjoy quality outdoor time with family and friends. John’s Excellent Bike Adventure helped raise money for the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation in Winnipeg to purchase those specialized bikes.

Westoba provided John with a $1,000 “wheel” sponsorship, which helps provide funding for an accommodated bicycle for a special needs child in Manitoba. If you’re interested in learning more about John’s adventure and the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation in Winnipeg visit www.crf.mb.ca.

Our Winnipeg Westoba Team attended CTV’s John’s Excellent Bike Adventure Kick-off Party on June 1st!

Donna Morken proudly accepts

her Volunteer Service Award from Premier Greg Selinger.

Donna Morken awarded the Premier’s Volunteer Ser vice Award.

To better serve our members, Westoba Credit Union is switching banking systems. We are very excited about the new system because it will allow us to offer enhanced online services like e-transfers and remote deposit capture. Things members like you have been asking for!

The change is taking place over the August long weekend. To make the switch, our branches will be closed on Saturday, August 1st and reopening Tuesday, August 4th. You can still access your accounts through ATMs and debit machines but cash withdrawal limits will be lower than normal. To check what your limits are, call

1-877-WESTOBA or visit any one of our branches. Online banking at CU@HOME and phone banking will be unavailable for most of the weekend but there will be no interruptions to MasterCard services.

As the date approaches, we will have more information available at westoba.com. We will keep you in the loop and make sure our transition to a new banking system is as seamless as possible for you, our members.

We take pride in providing members with quality service and are committed to ensuring this change has minimal impact on you.

Our AGM was held Wednesday, April 29th in Brandon. We welcomed just over 100 members, staff, directors and guests. Dennis Herntier, Director for District 3, and Chair of our Governance Committee presented a proposal for a change to the by-laws of Westoba Credit Union which would reduce the number of Districts from eight to three and the number of Directors from 12 to nine.

The goal of the amendment was to ensure Board representation effectively covered all our communities including: Winnipeg, Onanole and The Pas. With the proposed by-law amendment, our entire membership will be represented. With our new structure, we will also have the opportunity to draw nominations for Directors from larger areas and groups of people. We believe this will give us a great advantage for Board succession planning.

The by-law amendment was voted on and approved by the members present. Moving forward your Board of Directors will be busy working on a plan to reduce the Board from 12 to 9 Directors. Two recent resignations will naturally reduce the number of Directors serving on the Board to ten and a plan to reduce the Board to nine will be drafted and discussed prior to year end.

AGM and By-Law Amendment What does this mean for you the member?

A new banking system is on the way!

Last year, the federal government announced an expansion of the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). The UCCB is designed to help families balance costs by supporting their child care choices through direct financial support. The recent expansion results in families receiving increased monthly payments.

• For each child under six, parents will receive a total UCCB of $160/month per child. This is $60/month more than before.

• For each child from six to 17 years in age, parents will receive $60/month per child. This is new as previously there was no benefit for this age group.

The end result is a $720/year per child increase for families!

These enhancements started January 2015, but actual increased payments start in July. Your July payment will consist of your new monthly benefit, plus up to six months of benefits to cover the January to June 2015 period. From August onwards, your payments will reflect the new rates.

Let’s plan!

We want to help you get the most out of this new benefit. Our experienced staff will help you put together a plan to get the most of this extra cash. Some of the options might be:

• Establishing an Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) to help you pay for postsecondary studies. A family RESP makes it easy for you to invest for several children. There are additional government grants and learning bonds, which can add up to $9,200 in extra savings! We can help you figure out the best route to optimize your investments and plan for your family’s future. Best of all we can set up automatic transfers so it is easy for you, our members.

• Creating a financial plan with the help of our Wealth Solutions Team. Financial planning for a family is our specialty, and it is never too early or late to take a look at what your goals are. Let’s talk and find a solution to fit for your situation!

Westoba Credit Union is proud to be a gold sponsor of BellMedia’s Manitobaville - a contest showcasing our beautiful province.

Manitobaville encourages Manitobans to submit videos about their hometown for a chance to win $25,000 to help fund a community project. The video needs to explain what the community project is and why it is important. The community project can be anything from new businesses, to repairing existing businesses, to building or improving infrastructure like arenas, ball fields, fair grounds, etc. The possibilities are endless! The only criteria are that it benefits the community and is backed by the people who live there.

You have until Sunday, August 2nd to submit your video. The top 10 Manitobaville finalists will be revealed Friday, August 7th and then the voting goes live to the public. Whoever receives the most votes during the two-week voting period will be declared the winner on Monday, August 24th.

Get your thinking caps on and start brainstorming how your community can take part! Westoba hopes to see all our communities take part in Manitobaville. Visit westoba.com for more details.
