one of them. He wouldn’t necessarily recall their first name but he would always know exactly who they were and where he had met them.

Even though Jiddo Said became successful and dined with presidents and kings from all over the world, he was a very humble person, whose biggest pride in life was his Palestinian identity. Not one day passed without my grandfather thinking of his hometown. I will never forget the tears rolling down his cheeks when the Palestinian singer Mohammad Assaf won Arab Idol.

Jiddo adored Lebanon, his second homeland. He would often say that Lebanon’s nature, people, culture and services are second to none. Had the political situation been better, he would have definitely moved back. Chbaniye in the mountains was his version of a spa retreat; it also was for him a walk down memory lane. He hoped that one day we would all spend our summers there.

Jiddo was a very pious man, devoted to the word of God. He dedicated himself and his resources to support the Greek Orthodox Church in the Middle East. Patriarchs would always seek his support

and advice. He often played the role of mediator between the Church and governments.

Jiddo was a true philanthropist who never boasted about his charitable activities. He once saw a sick child on the news that couldn’t afford a crucial operation and immediately he made some calls and gave instructions that all his medical expenses should be taken care of. However, till today, the television station and the boy’s family don’t know who the benefactor was. Many people we had never met before came to offer their condolences and told us stories about how he had helped them in one way or another.

Finally, I would like to conclude by telling my birth family: let us all thrive to ensure that our grandfather’s legacy and his values live on forever. To my CCC family I would say: don’t offer me condolences as I should offer you my gratitude for so genuinely and loyally loving my Jiddo. If you were to ask me who comes first in Jiddo Said’s priorities, his offspring or his CCC family, I honestly wouldn’t be able to answer you. One thing I know, is that we, his grandchildren, have enormous shoes to fill, but we promise we will do our best.

“Surely we belong to Allah and to Him shall we return” Holy Quran.

Executive Vice Chairman

TAWFIC S. KHOURY

Kuwait, the theme of this month’s Bulletin, stands as a reminder of CCC’s origins and roots where CCC has had a strong presence since 1952. My father, God rest his soul, spent a large part of his life in Kuwait and made it his home. My family, the Khourys and the Sabbaghs, had maintained homes in Riyah Camp where my brothers, sisters and I spent our childhood with great memories and friendships. My father developed lifelong relationships that will be maintained for future generations, and Samer, Wael, Suhail, Samir and I will proudly work together to further nurture them. Kuwait was an integral player in the development and growth of CCC that was to become one of the most recognized engineering / construction companies, and in the past 60 years, CCC Kuwait (Conco), a Kuwaiti company and a subsidiary, was a major participant in Kuwait’s development. Recently CCC was awarded a mega project in Kuwait, an area established by our Founders, Said Khoury and Haseeb Sabbagh, my late father and late uncle.

The Kuwait area has trained and developed most of CCC’s leaders, our extended family, and in the last 60+ years was a jumping board to support the CCC expansion. The Kuwait area was an essential contributor to formalizing the winning and strong culture as well as development successes of CCC. The family culture is our pride and heritage. We should keep the close family spirit that we developed in Kuwait and continue the tradition in other areas.

My mother, Wadad Khoury, contributed to creating the “Family Spirit” among the CCC people in Kuwait. Now the CCC group is larger, operating in forty countries. We depend on the Area Managers and their wives to keep the “Family Spirit”. The founders’ open door policies should be maintained at the offices and at the homes. The owners will be available, when needed. We will continue to gather with CCC community during festive seasons and special occasions.

We are thankful to our partners, the late Mr. Abdullah Al Ghanim, Mr. Dirrar Al Ghanim and their families for their support and for being a part of the CCC Family.

Samer, Wael, Suheil, and I started our work experience in the Kuwait Area and gained our training while building tight internal and external relationships. We will continue to work diligently to maintain the successful trend CCC has achieved.

Following my father’s footsteps of establishing Kuwait to be a major CCC area, the recent awards in the Oil and Gas sector in Kuwait and CCC’s successful bidding strategy ensured a healthy share for CCC in the Kuwait construction business. The awards in Kuwait are supported by the most capable and loyal staff which we strive hard to safeguard.

CCC is entering 2015 with an exceptionally large backlog in excess of $10 billion, with Kuwait reaching its highest backlog ever. Kuwait recently awarded Mega packages in Oil and Gas, Infrastructure and Civil with further awards expected. CCC is well positioned to participate and have a healthy share of the new awards. The Founders’ vision and the carefully drawn strategy of diversifying geographically and across segments offered CCC a good standpoint.

Strategies are not accomplished without proper execution. Thanks to the diligent efforts of our operations teams and the intimate knowledge we have gained of our clients and partners’ needs, CCC has been able to consolidate its leading role in the construction business and its position as the preferred contractor in our region and beyond. The contribution of every member of the CCC family becomes visible through the performance culture as well as the healthy and strong results we achieve.

As for the prospects for 2015, I am confident it will be another good year for CCC due to the increase in mechanical and civil / infrastructure projects being awarded in our areas. Through team work we will maintain our established leadership position. I am confident that we will succeed in securing solid results.

In closing, I thank you all for standing next to our family and for giving us the highly appreciated support in mourning my father. In his memory, Samer, Wael, Suhail, Samir and I stand united and with your support will continue the path that our CCC founders have led and shaped.

I wish you all the best for 2015.

IAMA Tribute to the Late Uncle Said

FAMILY OF THE LATE ABDUL KARIM AL SHAWWA

A deep rooted friendship spanned over four decades between the late Uncle Said and our late father Abdul Karim Al-Shawwa, which extended to our families as well. From the time they met in Kuwait in the mid 1950’s they were almost inseparable, with a remarkable relationship based on mutual respect, where they both shared many characteristics - among which are perseverance and eagerness to succeed in harsh and challenging conditions, with the resolve in providing unconditional help to those in need, regardless of their status or background.

Our friendship with the Khoury family began with the early days of their simple accommodation at Badawiyya camp, in Shuiaba and later Riyah Palace, where Uncle Said and family unreservedly shared living quarters with CCC employees and laborers, exemplifying humility, empathy and modesty that characterized the unique family spirit of CCC.

Uncle Said not only built a successful name in the construction sector in Kuwait, but more importantly was considered by Kuwait’s rulers, governments, businesses and many Kuwaiti families an icon of allegiance with a wholehearted

commitment to Kuwait’s economy and overall interests. From excellence in construction work to boundless contributions to numerous social responsibility initiatives, unequivocal support to Kuwait during the 1990 invasion and limitless advocacy in international arenas, Uncle Said made his mark.

Since the loss of our parents, we were embraced by the Khoury family and throughout the past 24 years Uncle Said made it a point along with his family to spend our annual Eid Holiday with us, gracing such celebration with his noble presence, which meant a lot to us.

“How is Kuwait?” was Uncle Said’s first question whenever we met, underlining his affection for the country and his friends. Pleasantly reminiscing about the old days of Kuwait embodied most of such meetings, touching upon memories about family, friends and business; with a sense of humor, wit and warmth. When we last met him in late September, he was warmly hospitable and gracious the same way we have known him and the late Auntie Wadad for nearly the past six decades.

As a family we shall miss his love, guidance and wisdom that not only touched us, but so many people, even those who did not have the honour of meeting him. We are so fortunate to have lived in his era and had the privilege to grow, enjoy and learn while being close to him. We shall cherish those moments for the remainder of our lives and certainly his legacy shall continue throughout the next generation that was nurtured on love, humility and sheer desire to continue the CCC success story for generations to come.

God bless, and may his dreams and aspirations continue through his family, that is, CCC and all of us.

Omar, Jawdat, Nora and Haya

Our Memories…M. B. KAYYALI

We started our CCC journey from 1972 onwards in various countries until we reached Kuwait at the end of 1980 and stayed there until 1986. At that time, when we moved to Kuwait, we were asked to live in the Riyah Palace. When we were told that we would live there, my husband was not happy with this and initially refused because Riyah Palace was far from his work and the centre of everything. However, all this changed over time once we moved to Riyah Palace and this of course was due to the presence of Mrs. Wadad Sabbagh Khoury.

Mrs. Khoury used to call all the ladies, regardless of our husbands’ status, in Riyah Palace to come together and would gather us for various activities which truly made us feel that we were all a part of one family.

I remember one time when Sit Wadad, as we called her to express our love and respect, called one of her friends, Ms. Noha Khalef, who was well known for exceptional Arabic cooking, (having also published a cook book), to come to Riyah Palace to give us cooking lessons on various foods, sweets and especially the well-known Ma’moul cookies. This famous Ma’moul receipe continues to be passed down from generation to generation. Even when we left the Riyah Palace in 1986 I took it with me to UAE and then to Greece where I still continue to teach it to others.

Sit Wadad used to organize Christmas and New Year parties and gather all the ladies together to distribute her joy throughout the Riyah Palace. She was a caring, genuine and most kind lady. She used to listen to us and give us advice on all personal matters that concerned us.

Sit Wadad touched the hearts of myself and my husband in the most moving way: through my children, making us feel even more attached and part of the family. The kindness and genuine love she showed them was enormous. She used to call my daughters Linda and Lamees, who were only four and two when we first moved to Riyah

Palace, into her home constantly. She would give them cookies, play with them and take them for walks in her lovely garden to pick flowers. She would even order them beautiful dresses from Harrods of London and dress them up. To this day, now that my daughters have grown up to have their own children, they still remember Sit Wadad. My husband is correct when he says that Sit Wadad was an angel sent down from heaven to walk among us on earth as she was definitely not an ordinary person.

We believe that due to Sit Wadad’s personality and character, our CCC family culture flourished into what it is today and which we are still enjoying. We all felt this through her presence. Even when we moved from Kuwait, after leaving the Riyah Palace and I gave birth to my first son Mohammed, I remember she called me at the hospital in Bahrain to express her happiness and to congratulate us. This was the first time I had a child away from my parents and I was alone only with my husband. I remember Sit Wadad’s phone call and how moved I was by her genuine love and care. She had called and zaghratat (ululated) to me, which is tradition in our Palestinian culture but something that is done only by those who are dearest to you and are paying respect to you and expressing their happiness. Sit Wadad did this for me, putting aside any characteristics of holding a higher status.

I remember my husband’s words, when he told me that he would have preferred that I had stayed in Riyah Palace for the birth of our first son rather than being with him because he felt I would be safer and in caring hands with Sit Wadad, as she was our family now.

Through the continued inspiration of Sit Wadad, after moving to Greece, I started to organize two bazaars per year, which Sit Wadad sponsored, from which all the proceeds went to less fortunate children in need.

We will always look upon Sit Wadad as our godmother; she will always be our symbolic mother and remain forever in our hearts.

IAMCCC Kuwait - A Trip to Glory

N. F. SHAWWA

Fifty-five years ago, in 1959, my fate led me to Consolidated Contractors Company (CONCO) in Kuwait. I was a newly graduated engineer with little experience in life or work, only my enthusiasm and ambition. Little did I know my fortune would lead me to a lifetime of working closely with the founders of CCC, Said Khoury and Hasib Sabbagh, whose gift of vision and proficiency made them mentors for me and many in my generation, as well as countless young professionals to come.

Today, in 2015, I feel that I have recently lost a big brother in Muallem Said Khoury. I look back to those early days in Kuwait where I started my career. Said Khoury was stationed in Kuwait for decades, thus creating the CCC family there.

Those engineers who started in Kuwait in the 1950s and 60s, under his guidance, later became the company’s leaders and its senior managers. Their careers grew with the growth of CCC.

The barracks where these young engineers lived were basic. There were few facilities and circumstances were modest at the start, but you felt there was a spirit of pioneering and it was inspiring. We worked hard and bonded well in a new environment. The friendships I made with my colleagues during that period were unforgettable

and priceless. Some of those who shared these same early experiences included Naim Nasser, Kevork Toroyan, Bishara Al-Murr, to name a few. Apart from the engineers, I always fondly remember Abu Al-Adib Khoury, Abu Al-Kadib Jibran, Abu-Mahfouz Shuheiber, Elias Aboud, Joseph Lammam, and others.

CCC Kuwait Was the HubThose barracks in Kuwait produced the core group of key managers who were later allocated to the many CCC branches all over the Gulf, the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, and later North Africa and Asia.

In addition to leading and personally guiding the engineers in Kuwait, Said Khoury went further by staying in close contact with those who were sent to other parts of the Gulf to run projects. He always made sure they received the operational support they needed to succeed.

A policy of creating joint ventures with local Kuwaiti companies and foreign international firms set a solid foundation for CCC’s growth and its continuity. This was important because it allowed CCC to transition with great success from a subcontractor to companies such as Bechtel, to being a strong joint venture partner,

and later initiating its own projects to become a giant on its own. CCC Kuwait was a huge support in this expansion in the nearby countries. It played a key role in expanding operations in Bahrain, Sharjah, Iraq and Abu Dhabi and it serviced these countries’ projects with the necessary manpower and machinery. I was one of the engineers sent to these different locations, but Kuwait was always the critical hub for all of our work. When I worked for four years in Sharjah, later in Bahrain and then Baghdad, Said Khoury’s focused technical and personnel support reached us from Kuwait.

CCC Kuwait - A Trip to Glory

The CCC Way: Business Was PersonalOver many decades, we learnt from Said Khoury how to deal with clients in the Gulf, including heads of state, rulers and top corporate and government officials. His was a flexible way of interaction, and he taught us how to gain the confidence of our clients by doing the best job and exceeding their requirements. I remember my regular visits with Mr. Khoury and Hasib Sabbagh to such dignitaries. They established personal bonds with many of the region’s heads of state. The goodwill they generated for CCC as a result ensured the company’s reputation as a powerful entity as it expanded.

These visits were not just public relations exercises; they often became friendships as well. On one occasion in the early 1960s, we were visiting an Emir in the Gulf during Eid. The prince offered us the traditional platter of lamb with rice. Mr. Khoury had been travelling and was hungry, so he kept on eating. I whispered in his ear that the local custom was to eat one spoonful and then pass it over. He immediately stopped and smiled elegantly. The Emir and I laughed, which created a wonderful atmosphere in the diwan.

The late Hasib Sabbagh had an equally affable and valuable way of making connections with people in positions of influence. He provided CCC with great support from global banks and heads of state. Mr. Sabbagh’s personality and confident outreach made a constant and huge impact on the way the company prospered.

A Family CultureIn Kuwait, where Said Khoury lived most of his life, a family atmosphere flourished at CCC. Loyalty and commitment towards the company came naturally to its employees because of the way their leader treated them.

I remember how Mr. Khoury insisted that his office and home remain open to all staff. We were all welcome to come to him to discuss project issues or any problems and grievances. His open-door policy inspired loyalty and meant that problems did not simmer for too long. He was aware of most issues his people were facing.

Once, Mr. Khoury received a complaint that some of the employees living at the compound away from their families were being noisy into the late hours of the night. He promised that he would deal with them directly. He went over to where the men had gathered and found an atmosphere of singing and joking. Everyone saluted him and invited him to join in. He stayed there merrily until dawn!

The close-knit ties that Mr. Khoury and his family developed with CCC employees and their own families created a warm and supportive culture. He was like a big brother who involved himself in every big or small issue of his kin. But this extended beyond the company. Mr. Khoury and the CCC managers nurtured good contacts and remained close to thousands of people in Kuwait’s local society and its expatriate Arab and Palestinian communities.

The family atmosphere extended to all of our homes as well. I look back at those days in Kuwait and recollect the role of the woman who stood steadfastly behind Al Muallem. Who can forget the years of warmth and caring that the late great Wadad Khoury devoted to supporting those around her in Kuwait? She was a dedicated figure in a culture of caring. She loved supporting and helping the body of families within CCC. She created a social environment that compensated many of us for the hardship of being away from home and family. She organized lively, creative social events that amazed children and adults alike. At one Christmas party, Santa Claus fittingly came down from the sky on a crane, not on a sleigh. Mrs Khoury too became a mentor for the young wives, who each played a role in nurturing CCC’s family feeling.

Lessons We Learnt from CCC’s FoundersFinally, the founders of CCC left children who are dedicated to the vision of their fathers. I personally believe that this new generation of young owners is aware of what their takeover of the company requires. I am confident that those of them who are now in executive positions are working hard to strengthen the workforce, both for now and for later, and that they will continue to nurture a reliable professional second layer of management, just as their fathers did. To empower and give authority to a top level team of managers is a key responsibility for the owners: it strengthens staff confidence and the company’s foundations so that it does not waver as it continues to branch out in the world.

In a wider scope, the owner-managers must attract the very best of today’s young professionals. CCC’s most promising recruits must be able to see development paths to the top. When they are awarded trust, personal mentoring and empowerment in their roles, the company’s junior executives can develop into its most motivated achievers, dedicated to its success and loyal to its founders’ great legacies.

IAMSaid Khoury’s Contributions at a Glance

M. H. AL OTAIBI

Al-Ahmadi Governorate horse racing club was founded in the early seventies by the efforts of a group of Kuwaiti leaders in Al-Ahmadi, chaired by HE Sheikh Jaber Al-Abdullah, Governor of Al-Ahmadi, and businessman Said Khoury, founder of Consolidated Contractors Company.

Afterwards, a lot of effort was exerted to seek individual horse enthusiasts in the area, where Kuwait Oil Company allocated a piece of land for the establishment of a shed for eighteen horse stables near the Kuwait Oil Company airport in northern Al-Ahmadi. Consolidated Contractors Company, through its owner Said Khoury, contributed to the preparation of the race plan, the construction and equipment of the podium and terraces.

For the first race, Mr. Khoury submitted a trophy and a sports utility vehicle. It is worth noting the generous donation of HRH Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz, who presented Mr. Khoury with two horses, one named Riyah and the second named Safadieh. They participated in horse races in the eighties, where Riyah was owned by Tawfiq Khoury and Safadieh owned by Wael Khoury.

Muallem Said Khoury was one of the early supporters of equestrian events in coordination

with HE Sheikh Jaber Al-Abdullah, Governor of Al Ahmadi, and Mr. Jaafer chairman of Kuwait Oil Company and Captain Faisal Thunayan Alghanim and the late Hussein Asaad, who managed the club at the time and was succeeded by Saeed Suleiman Al-Saleh.

Afterwards, Mohammad Hadi Al-Otaibi was elected the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the equestrian club; who worked hard and diligently and succeeded to make Al-Ahmadi Governorate horse racing club a frontrunner amongst the horse racing clubs in the State of Kuwait, until the brutal invasion, which devoured everything and everybody.

After the liberation of Kuwait, efforts were made to reconstruct the Al-Ahmadi Governorate horse racing club. Mohammad Hadi Al-Otaibi assisted by Hamad Al-Qahtani and a number of activists managed to renovate the club and clear the mines. Then Said Khoury intervened and instructed the company’s management to support and provide the club’s management with all the necessary equipment and devices. The support is still on-going, fuelled by Tawfic Khoury’s love and affection for horse racing.

In Memory of Said KhouryBULLETIN EDITORS

The following article appeared in This Week in Palestine (Personality of the Month: In Memory of

Said Khoury by Sari Sifri) and is reproduced here with kind permission.

On October 15, 2014, we were saddened by the loss of a very important Palestinian figure, the great philanthropist and businessman Said Khoury.

Said Khoury was born in the northern Palestinian town of Safad in 1923 to a wealthy and respected family. He studied civil engineering at the American University of Beirut.

During the Nakba in 1948, his family, like many Palestinian families, left their homes and settled in Lebanon. It was there that he established Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC), with his cousin Hasib Al Sabbagh and Kamal Abdul Rahman (who later sold his stake in the company to the other founders). Khoury often recounted that his main motivation for setting up the company was his father, whom he wanted to shelter from the life-changing events brought on by the Nakba.

From its humble beginnings as a local subcontractor, CCC quickly became a giant in the construction industry, continuously ranking among the top 20 international contractors in the world, and employing over 130,000 people.

A Sample of CCC ProjectsCCC was involved in the construction of Dubai Mall, the largest shopping centre in the world, with a 515,000 m2 leasable area that hosts over 1,200 shops. It took 4 years to construct and includes an indoor aquarium.

Another CCC project is Abu Dhabi’s Landmark skyscraper, which is 324 metres high and composed of 72 floors - making it the second-tallest building in the Emirate.

A record-breaking project that CCC participated in was the Qatargas 3 and 4 plant, which remains the largest gas-to-liquids project. Because of the complexity and capacity of the plant, CCC is considered to be one of the most experienced companies in this field.

Today, CCC is the largest construction company in the Middle East. The company is in full bloom, with the largest backlog in its history, including gigantic projects such as the Riyadh Metro and Abu Dhabi airport. It is also worth noting that despite the huge success of their company, the owners are known for their humility, never failing to greet their employees when passing through the corridors or in the elevators.

Said Khoury, the PhilanthropistDespite being denied the right to return to Palestine, Mr. Khoury never failed to support and help his country develop. This support came in many forms, whether

through CCC or directly and personally.

One way he supported Palestine was by employing heavily from the region. A large part of CCC’s employee base comes from the Palestinian diaspora and the Levantine region. Palestinians of all backgrounds can be found in CCC, making it a microcosm of Palestinian subcultures. Special focus is given to those who face great hardships, such us the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon who are given employment opportunities abroad to help improve their living conditions. Palestinians are also made comfortable in the company through its unique corporate culture which is based on regional traditions and values.

Mr. Khoury also offered support by spearheading investment in Palestine. CCC has invested in several projects in Palestine, the largest of which was buying a stake in the Palestinian electric company. Given that economic viability is a precondition to our success in gaining statehood, investments by multinational groups such as CCC not only increase confidence in the Palestinian economy but also in the Palestinian cause as a whole.

In addition, Mr. Khoury personally supported local development initiatives such as the Bethlehem Development Foundation (http://www.bethlehemdevelopment.org/), which he founded. The foundation’s objective is to revitalise the city of Bethlehem through several projects funded by various benefactors. One of these projects, “The Beautification and Rehabilitation of Manger Square Area,” was made possible through a US$ 2 million donation from Mr. Khoury.

Other Palestinian institutions that he supported include the Palestinian Museum and Al Quds University.

Last but not least, Mr. Khoury, through his embodiment of the Palestinian values of hard work, family, and camaraderie, raised the bar for Palestinians around the globe.

During these difficult times, we should be reminded of success stories such as that of Mr. Khoury, who relied heavily on Palestinian values and resources. Mr. Khoury was not only a brilliant business figure but also a patriotic man who refused to give up on his homeland and its people. Such personalities give Palestinians hope today in building a strong, independent country that can take its place amongst the nations.

Muallem Said, thank you for your lifelong contribution to our beloved Palestine. Your legacy will survive through your children and through the CCC family.

May your soul rest in eternal peace.

TSubcontracting

M. SOUFYAN

IntroductionMost of the organizations in the construction business need to subcontract work packages in order to complete their projects. The reason for subcontracting may vary from the wish to obtain work in a specialized area or due to work load in order to meet milestones. Subcontracting can be classified as a system that includes the following processes:

• Identification of subcontract packages.

• Preliminary evaluation.

• Qualification process.

• Selection process.

• Control processes.

• Documentation requirements.

• Performance measurement.

These processes are illustrated in table 01.

Identification of Subcontract Packages At the earliest stage during mobilization, project management will identify work packages to be subcontracted and will compile a provisional subcontractors list. This will include the following information:

• Required start / completion date.

• Nominated or preferred subcontractors.

• Identification of items that require priority letting because of long preparation times or early delivery dates.

Usually, unless agreed upon with the Customer, the volume of subcontracted work will not exceed the scope of work permitted for subcontract work in the contract. During this

stage a risk assessment related to the scope of work has to be carried out and capability of the subcontractors has to be considered.

Preliminary EvaluationThere are many subcontractors willing to conduct the work; the purpose of the preliminary evaluation is to eliminate unsuitable subcontractors. The organization needs a process for gathering intelligence on potential subcontractors and for eliminating unsuitable subcontractors. The first step is to establish the type of product or service the organization requires for supporting its projects and then searching for subcontractors that claim to provide such product or service. It is very important to examine the history of past performance of each subcontractor.

During the preliminary evaluation, the following should be considered:

• Delivery and execution requirements.

• Capability to do the work or to deliver the service.

• Capability to provide technical support.

• Ethical behavior.

• Complying with health, safety and environmental standards.

• Complying with relevant environmental regulations.

• Complying with quality requirements.

• Financial stability.

Identification of subcontract packages and preliminary evaluation of subcontractors is illustrated in Chart 01.

Design SubcontractorsDesign subcontractors are required to conduct their design in accordance with ISO 9001: 2008 standard. Therefore, in addition to technical capability, the design subcontractor must establish processes for design control: it is required to examine these processes. Design organizations are facing a serious problem in understanding the ISO standard requirements. For this reason, it is important to examine the understanding of the organization and to check actual examples related to the following processes:

• How the organization conducts design planning.

• How the design activities are carried out.

• How the design input and output identified.

• How design verification is carried out.

• How design review is carried out.

• What their understanding of design validation is and how it is conducted.

• How design changes are carried out.

Qualification Process The process of qualification may fall within the following categories:

• Creating a new subcontractors’ list for a specific project.

• Qualifying a new subcontractor not listed in the organization’s approved list or in the customer’s provided list of subcontractors.

• Updating the organization’s subcontractor list.

Therefore, the qualification process is not necessarily related to a specific project. It may be carried out for the purpose of the internal update of the list of subcontractors.

Once the list is generated an invitation to tender can be issued. Invitation to tender will include technical and commercial requirements. Although the potential subcontractors are capable of providing the required product or service, the organization will ensure that they are capable of meeting specific project characteristics and can control its quality and delivery time.

The ISO certification provides confidence that the subcontractor can deliver a certain type of product or service. However, it is not a guarantee that the subcontractor has the capability of meeting the organization’s specific requirements.

The pre-qualification process is illustrated in Chart 02.

Selection ProcessFrom the list of qualified subcontractors, the organization will compile a short list of bidders. At this stage a detailed specification should be available for the required product or service. Once the short list is finalized, the organization will prepare an invitation to tender covering the commercial and technical requirements of the work. The following information is required in the invitation to tender:

• Scope of work and site address.

• Offices and facilities; lay-down area and access.

• Start / finish date.

• Quality management system requirements.

• Interface requirements.

• Drawing, technical requirements / specifications.

• The right of the organization and its customer to have access to subcontractor’s work for the purpose of inspection, surveillance and audit.

• Requirements for deliverables.

The selection process and follow-up are illustrated in Chart 03.

Tender Quote EvaluationUpon receiving tender documents from subcontractors, the organization should conduct evaluation to determine the most suitable subcontractor. The organization will generate comparison charts covering commercial and technical requirements. The technical review is usually carried out

by the engineers who prepared the technical specifications. The organization should have scoring criteria so that the result of evaluation is based on objective evidence.

Contract Negotiations After the selection of the subcontractor, the organization may need to conduct contract negotiations with the subcontractor in order to draft a subcontract agreement. This will also give a chance for the subcontractor to discuss any concerns prior to signing the final subcontract agreement.

Control Process It is important to define the control methods to be applied to subcontractors. What control methods are applied depends on:

• Type of product or service.

• Impact of the product or service on final product quality.

• Results of previous audits conducted by the contractor or a third party.

• Results of previously demonstrated capability and performance of subcontractors.

• Requirements of the main contract with the employer.

Subcontracting

Defining the Subcontractor’s ControlThe first level in defining the subcontractor’s control is the subcontract agreement between the main contractor and the subcontractor. This is usually followed by a process of quality planning by the subcontractor. Depending on the scope of work, the quality planning process may include design and procurement activities, as well as construction and commissioning.

Documentation Requirements At the initial stage, and in addition to commercial requirements, the subcontractor is required to develop and submit to the contractor a set of documentation covering “nonmaterial requirements” prior to starting construction activities, such as:

• Drawings and specifications.

• Quality plan.

• Method Statement.

• Quality control procedures.

• Inspection and test plans.

• Health, safety and environmental plan.

• As-built, etc…

Output documentation related to work execution and classified as quality records are also required

to be submitted to the main contractor as part of the handover process.

Performance MeasurementDuring the life of a subcontract a performance measurement has to be carried out, for example, the same key performance indicators “KPI” applied by the main contractor may be applied to the subcontractor’s construction works. If the KPIs are showing negative trend, or if they are below a specified limit, action must be taken to improve performance.

At the end of each major subcontract the contractor should complete a subcontractor performance report; such a report is required for future evaluation and selection of subcontractors.

Table 02 represents an example of a scope of work related to EPC subcontracts in relation to quality management requirements. EPC subcontracts may include processes related to design, procurement and construction, as well as commissioning and handing over as illustrated in the table.

GeographyThe State of Kuwait is located in the northern edge of Eastern Arabia at the tip of the Arabian Gulf. It shares borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Kuwait has a 499km long coastline and covers an area of 17,820km2. It has nine islands all of which, with the exception of Failaka Island, are uninhabited.

Population & GovernoratesKuwait’s population is estimated to be 3.5 million distributed over the six governorates which are: Al-Assimah (the capital), Al-Jahra, Al-Farwaniyah, Hawalli, Al-Ahmadi and Mubarak Al-Kabeer.

ClimateKuwait has a semi-desert climate with a huge temperature difference between winter and summer. The highest temperature recorded in Kuwait was 54C in July 2012 and the lowest temperature recorded was −6C in January 1964. The summers are quite long, punctuated mainly by dramatic dust storms.

LawKuwait follows the civil law system modeled after the French legal system. Kuwait’s legal system is a mix of British common law, French civil law, Egyptian civil law and Islamic law.

Dress Although western style clothing is popular among Kuwaitis, the traditional ankle-length

garment worn by men, the dishdash, along with the headdress called the ghutrah and agal are commonly used. The traditional female attire is a colourful dress known as the darra’a.

Discovery of OilOil was first discovered in 1938 in Burgan Field which is the world’s second largest oil field, followed by discoveries in Magwa in 1951, Ahmadi in 1952, Raudhatain in 1955, Sabriya in 1957 and Minagish in 1959.

Today Kuwait produces around 3 million barrels of crude oil per day and has proven oil reserves of over 100 billion barrels.

EconomyKuwait has a petroleum-based economy, petroleum and fertilizers being the main export products.

Petroleum accounts for nearly half of GDP and 95% of export revenues and government income.

The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) was founded in 1980 as an umbrella company integrating KOC, KNPC, KOTC and PIC and effectively placing them under government control.

The subsidiary companies of KPC are:

• Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)

• Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC)

• Petrochemicals Industries Company (PIC)

• Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI-Q8)

• Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC)

• Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC)

• Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC)

• Kuwait Aviation Fueling Company (KAFCO)

• Oil Sector Services Company (OSSC)

• Oil Development Company (ODC).

Kuwait has three old refineries producing 930,000 barrels per day which necessitated an upgrade due to world environmental requirements. International contractors are currently bidding for Kuwait’s fourth refinery with a planned capacity of 615,000 barrels per day. The fourth refinery has a strategic goal of supplying low sulfur fuel to the local power plants which will significantly reduce pollutant emissions and in that sense it constitutes a special importance to the environment.

The Kuwaiti Dinar is the highest-valued currency unit in the world.

Road Safety in KuwaitJ. G. MALIAKAL

An accident I witnessed last year during the early morning hours still haunts me. As I was driving along Road 30 a black sports car in front of me suddenly disappeared into the nearby bushes. The sports car had suddenly accelerated thus losing control. It had flipped over several times before ramming into the bushes. It was a fatal accident.

Road traffic accidents are ranked ninth as the leading cause of death worldwide and it is predicted to move to second place by 2020. The estimated cost of traffic crashes globally reaches US$ 518 billion each year and accounts for around 1.5% of many countries’ GDP.

Kuwait is at the top of the list of the countries with alarmingly high traffic accident fatality rates (1.09 deaths /day). Kuwait has broken the world record in the number of traffic deaths, with 17 deaths recorded in every 100,000 cases on the average. The traffic accidents in Kuwait are significantly high compared to many countries in world. This is attributed to many reasons such as reckless driving, using the mobile while driving and not abiding by traffic rules and regulations.

The General Traffic Department of Kuwait has taken several strict measures to implement traffic laws. Several traffic campaigns have been launched to raise awareness among the citizens and expatriates alike. Traffic violations have been strictly dealt with. This has restricted the number of traffic accidents to an extent.

Human distractions behind the wheel are a major contributor to road accidents. Each day several accidents that take place involve a distracted

driver. Distracted driving activities include using the cell phone, texting and eating while driving. Using in-vehicle technologies (such as navigation systems) can also be sources of distraction. These distractions can endanger the lives of the driver and others.

There are three main types of distraction: ↳ Visual: taking your eyes off the road.

↳ Manual: taking your hands off the wheel.

↳ Cognitive: taking your mind off driving.

With the increase in the number of vehicles on the road, the problem of road safety has to be tackled immediately.

Deliberate and determined efforts by each one of us can help us drastically improve road safety.

Fabrication and Erection of Tank InternalsS. HADDAD

The project consisted of the construction of two Eocene tanks and two chemical storage tanks at MGC-Wafra.The scope of the project consists of the design, engineering, procurement, construction, inspection, testing and commissioning of one 100,000 bbl capacity stock tank with gas boot, one 50,000 bbl capacity free water knockout (FWKO) tank with gas boot, in addition to two 25,000 US gallons capacity chemical storage tanks with new control system in the chemical storage facility including the installation of new instruments on existing tanks to match the new tanks to integrate all the tanks in chemical plant to one control system and associated facilities at the Main Gathering Center (MGC), Wafra.

The most interesting part of the project was the fabrication and erection of the FWKO tank internals which were designed by Sicon Oil and fabricated and erected by CCC.

The design was done in such a way as to make it easy for maintenance in the future; the Client was impressed with the design and had told us verbally that it is better than the existing ones they have.

Fabrication and Shop Assembly of the Tank InternalsFabrication of the tank internals was done in the CCC shop in Ahmadi and the internals were assembled in the yard outside the shop before moving them for painting to ensure proper and smooth erection and to avoid any site modifications.

The picture shows the assembled tank internals after completion of fabrication.

Fabrication of the Derrick StructureThe installation of tank internals was done using a mobile derrick structure system which was designed and fabricated by our fabrication shop engineer, Ibrahim Rizk.

The derrick height was 13 meters as the roof truss structure was not strong enough to handle the erection of the internals by chain blocks in order to cover all the levels of internals up to the required height which was approximately 12 meters. It was made with consecutive heights of 3 meters, 3 meters, 6 meters and 1 meter in order to be able to reduce its height after completion of the highest parts of the internals including the dry oil collector and structure, which makes it easier for the movement inside the tank.

Note: the above method was adopted due to the jack up method of the internals used to erect the tank which required the roof to be erected first. Hence it made erection from the roof top impossible.

The Assembly and Load Test of the Derrick StructureAfter completion of the derrick fabrication, it was assembled and load tested in the shop to ensure the derrick type structure was safe for both the strength and serviceability criteria. The load test was witnessed and certified by an approved third party.

Erection of the Tank InternalsThe installation and assembly of tank internals was challenging since the tank was already constructed leaving an opening (5040 mm width x 2500 mm height) in the shell which was kept temporarily

open until the completion of internals’ erection.

A telescopic forklift with a vertical reach of 12.5 meters was kept inside the tank to assist in the erection of spools along with the derrick. The height of the forklift was 2450 mm (50 mm less than the opening in the tank shell).

Erection of the tank internals was done in a series of sequential steps in order to ensure proper movement of the forklift, mobile scaffolding and the mobile derrick structure.

Challenges• Installation of the tank internals after

completion of the tank roof was a big challenge since all the work had to be done through an opening in the shell.

• Finding a forklift to fit through the opening. Note that the beacon light had to be removed in order to get the forklift inside the tank.

• Extending the derrick structure was done by crane utilizing the man-way openings on the tank roof.

• Following a proper sequence of erection.

Journey to Kuwait … 1977 to 2010B. MOUSSA

I joined CCC in 1975 immediately after I graduated from California State University, Long Beach.

Prior to finishing my Masters Degree, I corresponded with the late Joseph Lammam who responded by telling me to pass by CCC’s offices in Beirut once I had finished my studies in order to discuss my employment.

Therefore, after graduation I went to CCC’s offices in Beirut (when the civil war started in Lebanon) and after meeting Mr. Lammam, he offered me a position with CCC in Saudi Arabia.

After two years in Saudi Arabia I was asked to transfer to Kuwait, when I had already overcome the shock of moving from California to Ras Tanura.

Michel Nasser called me into his office to convince me to transfer to Kuwait by telling me that he was sending me to the Switzerland of the Gulf, in 1977, when I first hesitated to make a move.

I joined Kuwait Area with Badie El Murr on the LPG project and thanked Michel Nasser for his honest advice as Kuwait was very open and more advanced in all aspects.

I lived and worked in Kuwait for two happy years during which I got married to my lovely wife, who joined me and came to live in Kuwait. She could not have joined me if it was not for the late Mr. Said Khoury who approved granting me a house at Riyah Palace when the Area Manager refused it.

I left Kuwait in 1979 then came back in 2010 to take charge of the Area.

The first three years were very tough for me as I was trying to re-structure the Area by releasing redundant staff to other Areas. The main task during the last period was to pre-qualify CCC with the major players in the oil and gas sector in addition to the infrastructure.

CC Group Offshore is now qualified to bid for KOC under category 14 (Major EPC projects).

After the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and for the last 23 years CCC secured two medium sized projects with Equate. However, recently we were lucky enough to secure the Clean Fuel Project with KNPC for $500m from Petrofac, followed by another sizable project of $700m with KOC, being a consortium member with Petrofac.

Kuwait during 2015 thereafter will be a busy Area for the coming four years not only for CCC but in all aspects as the oil companies and the government have a very aggressive plan. The following projects, just awarded and which are at the design stage and or the bidding

stage which is bound to increase the prices on all fronts, being it logistics, food, accommodation and so on.

KOC Projects:• Lower Fars Heavy Oil Development Phase 1

KNPC Projects:• MAB 1 Mina Abdulla Clean Fuel Package 1.• New Refinery Package 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 (under

Bidding).

Ministry of Public Works (MPW) Awarded & Under Bidding Projects:• Roads / bridges between Mina Al Zour and

Wafra.Kuwait did not develop its infrastructure and the oil and gas facilities for many years. This created a huge backlog of construction projects that had to be executed and cannot wait any longer to support its crude production facility at the three million barrels per day and the new environmental restrictions necessitated the launching of the Clean Fuel Project.

Kuwait International Airport has not been expanded for many years and the population of Kuwait has grown to 3.5 million that is causing a lot of congestion at the airport and has necessitated building a new airport terminal and runway.

Such an aggressive construction plan is bound to reflect on the people of Kuwait positively from an economic point of view due to the need to increase the number of employees who will work on all the projects and the support required from different trade and supply centers which will certainly boost the economy.

CCC Kuwait62 Years of Accomplishments

S. KHATIB

During the early 1950’s in Kuwait, the first steps towards urban development were taken. Projects were launched to construct roads, to develop the oil sector and to modernize oil production. Consolidated Contractors Company (Conco as it came to be known) began to participate in these activities with the opening of its first branch in the Gulf region in the State of Kuwait in 1952. It was based in Al-Badawia area behind the Old Fahaheel police station and Kuwait Oil Tanker Company.

The company’s first achievement was the construction and maintenance of Ahmadi High School, which overlooks the road to the Mina Al-Ahmadi. This achievement was followed by the construction of Ahmadi Governorate Building, which has remained, along with the Ahmadi High School project, a testament to the high standard quality of construction with no problems or flaws till today. Many other projects were constructed efficiently and specifically Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery Project.

These projects were carried out under the direct supervision of the President and the Founder the late Muallem Said Khoury and supported by the late Naim Nasser and the late Joseph Jedoun.

After the company became well established, preparations were actively made to tender for larger projects. Some of these projects were:

• Oil Pier Project - Al Shuaibah.

• Gathering Centers 19 +24 Kuwait Oil Company.

• Fahaheel Road Project from what was called

Salmiyah Roundabout on 4th ring road up to Mina Abdallah.

• Liquified Natural Gas Pipeline Project (KGUP) north of Kuwait to Mina Abdullah for Kuwait Oil Company in collaboration with the American company SANTA FE.

• Ductile iron pipe water project 37-inch from 5th ring road water towers to the Ahmadi water reservoirs.

• Sixth Ring Road Project for Ministry of Public Works in cooperation with the Swiss company Shabrakz Energy.

• Olefins Plant Project - Phase I + II.

• Headquarters of the National Bank of Kuwait Project.

• The Indian Embassy building,

and dozen more projects, mainly in the oil sector.

Kuwait Area has been managed by the following executives: Nabil Al-Shawa, Yousef Hayek, Jubran Haddad/Hasan Sadek, Magdy Mansour, Makram Khoury and Bahjat Moussa.

In addition, a range of engineering and technical experts supported the execution of projects such as: Badie El Murr, Adib Younis, Nabil Hamdan, Kamal Naim Yusuf, Hatem Mohammed Al-Dahleh, Shafiq Khoury, Rizkallah Jabr, Ali Alstouhi, Sulaiman Issa, Bilal Kayali, Sami Ghandour, Leon Ohanessian and Gad Shehata.

CCC Kuwait was the base from which additional areas in the Gulf region were opened up and it provided them with the expertise and skills that helped to strengthen and launch the new areas to carry out their projects.

It is worth mentioning that Mohammad Hadi Al-Otaibi has lived through all these stages of the company’s life in Kuwait.

My Twenty Year Journey with CCCG. A. OMAR

It is approximately twenty years since my first day at CCC, a company with its own particular culture built step by step over the years and through the hard work by its founders (may God bless their souls).

A friend of mine who is now settling somewhere in Africa and myself were on a visit to some companies at Ahmadi city (north Kuwait) looking for a job as we were both without a permanent job at the time. That afternoon I had a phone call from my late parents (God bless their souls) who were living in Amman, Jordan and during our conversation I mentioned CCC and my visit to some other companies. It is important to mention that it was very hard to find a job due to few projects being available at that time, so my father asked me to return to CCC and get the contact number of Muallem Said. My father talked to Maullem Said who was fortunately on his way to Jordan within a week. The friendship of my father, Muallem Said and Muallem Hassib started back in the early 50’s when they were in Aden, Yemen and late 50’s in Kuwait. Muallem Said and my father met in Amman. After a social conversation about the families and other social matters, my father told Muallem Said that I had no permanent job in Kuwait; the reply of Muallem Said was, consider Ghassan as one of the CCC family.

The great news came the following night when I received a phone call from a gentleman who has the heart of his father, Muallem Tawfic Khoury, who advised that he would be in Kuwait on Monday and I should come to meet him and start my job with CCC that same day. These are the features of the owners of this great company, and this was Muallem Said: humble, moral and loyal to his friends.

I will not forget the day when Muallem Bahjat Moussa, our AMD, called me when I was at site and asked me to come and greet Muallem Said who had just arrived in Kuwait: in spite of having a lot of visitors, Muallem Said asked me to sit with them and started telling me so many stories about himself and my father. I remember in 2006 when the Morganti Group invited the staff to a banquet with Muallem Said and Muallem Tawfic

at Riyah Palace. I was working for Morganti at the time when my wife, my daughter, my son and myself met Muallem Said and he asked about my kids and wondered if my late parents had seen my kids before passing away. Then he kissed both of them saying that those kisses were

on behalf of your parents.

I had known about CCC before I became a staff member. I met Samer Khoury in the USA when we were at the same University - he later became Muallem Samer, along with Maullem Makram Khoury who was doing his PHD in engineering.

Every morning I thank God for being a member of the CCC family and my father and Muallem Said for the opportunity they gave me at CCC. I will not forget Muallem Suheil who used to tell me “you are the son of your father”. I hope the sons will continue the great work of their fathers for the best of CCC. Currently my brother and I are working for this great company; I hope our children will do so.

Thank you, CCC.

Area Plant, Machinery & Vehicles DepartmentR. MOUSTAFA

Historical BackgroundThe Area PMV Department in Kuwait was established in 1956 in line with company policy and continued up to date, covering currently several projects (Joint operations, construction of eocene tanks, the New Export Transit Pipeline-BS171, road projects and asphalt plants, the Clean Fuel Project KNPC CFP) and

soon the KOC Lower Fars Heavy Oil Development Project.

CCC Kuwait’s current fleet consists of approximately 530 pieces of equipment, distributed among projects, in addition to an ongoing equipment mobilization process from within CCC fleet via synchronization with PMV Athens office, for upcoming projects. The expected amount of equipment will reach a total of 1,200 items within about two years.

Kuwait management emphasizes the mobilization of CCC equipment, whenever available for projects. Hiring from third parties is restricted to equipment not available within the Group.

PMV Role & DutiesFurther to its normal duties, PMV Kuwait is in the process of mobilizing specialized supervision, operators/drivers, along with competent technicians in line with the new sophisticated equipment systems.

Moreover, by the beginning of March 2015, representatives from RASO office will visit Kuwait to install, train and implement the new asset management system MAXIMO, which will be utilized in PMV Kuwait. This system will assist in controlling PMV’s project fleet and miscellaneous services equipment (MSEs) in coordination with the stocking and issuance of required spares, fuel and other PMV consumables.

PMV LogisticsPMV Kuwait has succeeded in managing the flow of equipment, manpower, temporary facilities and other materials into projects from the Area Plant Department (Abu Dhabi). Everything is done through a planned and safe transportation process (loading and offloading procedures).

Safety MeasuresAs HSE is a part of the PMV culture, PMV manpower has been trained for safety aspects, especially environmental awareness. Orientation is provided to PMV Personnel through daily toolbox talks and meetings. Such orientation focuses on oil and fuel spills: how to respond safely to any spill, in addition to filling procedures and drivers fatigue (causes and prevention).

Furthermore, PMV Kuwait has signed an agreement with local companies approved by legal authorities to collect waste resulting from PMV operations (used oil, batteries, filters and so on), taking the necessary precautions while handling hazardous material (gaseous, liquids, or solids) to guarantee the safety of the environment.

Qasr Al-Riyah Fabrication YardThe Birth of CCC’s Undertaking of Mechanical Works

R. SHUHAIBER

The Vision

Back in the late sixties, ETPM and Brown & Root were looking for a fabrication yard located on the seafront of Kuwait to undertake a major fabrication work of shore jackets.

This demand came after CONCO Kuwait had completed moving their staff and labour from Fahaheel Camp to Qasr Al-Riyah, which also included the permanent residence of Said Khoury and his family. Qasr Al-Riyah, located on the beach, almost 2km in length and about 300m wide of virgin golden sand. The examples and stories below depict how this move really was a blessing in disguise - both professionally and culturally for CCC. It was always Muallem Said’s desire to remain close to his employees, deepening a tradition within the CCC family and upholding its legacy, and Qasr-Al Riyah was a great foundation to build on.

Knowledge about ETPM’s search for a yard was passed on by Mr. Khoury’s strong and prominent contacts and through the acquired market brainpower of CONCO Kuwait’s management. Upon hearing of this, Mr. Khoury began envisioning the ideal location for establishing this fabrication yard right there in Qasr Al-Riyah, where CONCO Kuwait’s management could closely follow up on its development and operation.

Acting on his vision, direct contacts were established with the clients followed by several technical discussions. Meanwhile, Mr. Khoury engaged marine experts to prepare a feasibility study for such a facility with the inclusion of a marine survey. The outcome was quite encouraging and subsequently the Al-Riyah Fabrication Yard (RFY) was awarded the first job to fabricate the jackets for the Khoor El Amaia field in Iraq.

Consequently, CONCO Kuwait’s team began the preparations of RFY and the construction of the loading shore facilities and causeway.

RFY Added Value to the CCC Group

With the establishment of RFY, CONCO Kuwait’s capabilities and its know-how to undertake mechanical projects were put into place. (Many likened this phase for CCC and the industry to the Renaissance era in Europe.)

Prior to the inception of RFY, CONCO Kuwait began primarily as civil contractors. Their contribution in oil and gas projects followed the typical mode of mechanical construction contracts at that time. It was merely rendering resources (i.e. equipment, labour and staff) for oil and gas companies. Others, such as joint venture partners or directly by clients, executed the management of construction. This trend continued by CONCO Kuwait for quite some time and came to an end after the completion of PIC Fertilizer Plant: a project in Shuaiba, where the project was performed with WESCON as CONCO Kuwait’s joint venture partner.

With the commencement of operations at RFY, it became evident that a hub should be established there to become the heart of development of CCC’s know-how in the oil and gas construction industry.

Mechanical Skilled WorkforceThe demand for qualified mechanical resources during the execution of activities at RFY necessitated setting up development and training programmes for vocational skills. In this regard, CCC management succeeded in

establishing contacts with several institutions in the Middle East to cater for this continuous need. A number of graduates from these institutions were hired by CCC (around 300 annually), which included welders, fabricators, fitters, electricians and instrument technicians. Many of these skilled labourers continued their development within CCC where they became the backbone for CCC site management, carrying out roles such as general foremen and superintendents.

Graduate EngineersRFY was considered the “Industrial Institute” for CCC. Through various RFY projects, CCC management recognized the important role of young engineers within site management who could easily read and interpret drawings, specifications and standards. This matter complemented the responsibility of the site management team that was traditionally made up of foremen and superintendents. It created a hybrid blend that allowed for more complex tasks in more organized and cost effective ways. Accordingly, CCC started targeting high performance graduate engineers by involving them in the field operations at RFY. CCC became pioneers in the Middle East who were fulfilling this matter and the proven coherence between graduate engineers along with foremen and

superintendents resulted in a major evolvement in construction productivity in the field. Gradually, this structure was embraced across all offices and site functions, including management of contracts, project controls, logistics and quality management. Most of CCC’s foremen and superintendents realized the merit of having these young engineers within the site management teams and accordingly encouraged their own children to pursue similar careers in engineering.

Graduate Engineers - My Experience

“I have always considered myself to be very fortunate to have had the chance to commence my career as a mechanical graduate site engineer at RFY. I was one of the very few piping engineers who pursued this type of specialty within CONCO Kuwait at that time. While working in RFY, I managed to develop my technical and managerial skills during the course of the fabrication and assembly of jackets, bridges and platforms for Zakoum, Um Al Shaiff and Al Bundoq Field. At the time, computers and automation were still uncommon and I had to completely rely on my HP 67 calculator, which had very limited programming capability and memory. My tasks were focused primarily on material handling, producing cut lists, inspection, document and quality control, sandblasting and painting, piping fabrication and erection and producing templates for branches and miters”.

Material ManagementAt RFY, due to the necessity to wrap up fabrication tasks quickly, material handling was a major challenge the team had to face. The basis for organizing and controlling material receiving, logistics, preservation and issuing began at RFY. Progressively over the years, this matter significantly evolved and RFY’s team was able to track and control material from the time they were listed in their packing lists up until their final quality releases for certification.

Heavy Lifts ManagementOne of the principal operations within RFY was to assemble, move and load in and out big and heavy structures. Such an operation was relatively new to CONCO Kuwait at the time, and consequently it was realized that dedicated specialized resources should be assigned to deal with heavy lifts and control the allocation and movement of cranes. This was also complemented with the assignment of dedicated

specialized resources to work out lifting plans.

Landing Craft, Tug Boat and Decompression ChamberIn the midst of carrying out fabrication works at RFY, the necessity of CCC owning their own marine logistics as opposed to relying solely on third parties became evident. This led to the decision to build CCC’s own Landing Craft, Tug Boat and Decompression Chamber being made during this period.

Proposals & EstimationRaising the involvement of RFY in mechanical projects necessitated the development of proposal and estimation systems for mechanical works that capitalized on feedback from already executed projects. Furthermore, norms were established and schools of thought for pipeline and plants were set relying on acquired experience. With this, CCC management’s confidence in the pricing process by the RFY team rose substantially, and consequently we received their instruction to prepare several bid proposals for KOC including The Gathering Facilities GC-17, Al Wafra Pipeline with JGC and ISO Butane Facilities with Bechtel. Many of these proposals necessitated extracting quantities from FEED documents at main contractors’ offices.

Project Control FunctionsAt RFY, there was a sense that our project control systems were not fully suitable for adequately covering mechanical works. Thus, the era of the enhancement of CCC’s project controls systems began, while recognizing the new activities and trends that CONCO Kuwait were performing for mechanical works. Steadily, these systems evolved to become a major asset in controlling the execution of mechanical works using database and rendering platforms.

Technical Know-HowWith the establishment of RFY, it was inevitable that development of the operational matters of mechanical works would

commence. This included: many technical and innovational aspects of fabrication and welding associated technologies; quality control and assurance; material control, preservation and warehousing; project control, management and administration of resources and several others disciplines.

The Story of the Creation of NPCCMr. Khoury continued to closely follow RFY’s operation. He attended almost every load-out operation and was very aware of their destinations. The majority of these load-outs at RFY were destined to ADMA offshore fields in Abu Dhabi. During the course of Mr. Khoury’s frequent visits to Abu Dhabi for business follow-ups and meetings with UAE officials, he purposefully would place emphasis on these projects that were fabricated and assembled at RFY for the Abu Dhabi oil fields. Thus, the two parties agreed on the feasibility of establishing a fabrication yard in Saadeyyat Island. The idea was enthusiastically taken up by his higness the late Sheikh Zayed and UAE officials and culminated in an agreement to form a joint venture company in Abu Dhabi between ADNOC and CCC. This company was named National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC) and was fully managed and operated by CCC as per the joint venture agreement. Since then, NPCC’s growth has been exponential, and today it is characterized as one of the leading contractors in the Middle East. Moreover, there is no doubt that RFY’s know-how, resources and existence within

Cranes - A Valuable ResourceAs a young engineer, I was always eager to fulfill and go beyond the tasks assigned to me. I would run around RFY all day to ensure that my team had the necessary resources. This was not an easy job since cranes were quite scarce. I recall a funny incident with regard to cranes in the presence of Abu Adeeb (the uncle of Mr. Khoury), Abu Al Kadeeb’s (Fawzi Gobran) the general superintendent and Mahran (the load out superintendent). As I started my daily routine checking on my crew, I found out that they were sitting idly as their cranes had be relocated to another task at the seafront. I immediately went to Mahran’s office that was located opposite the general superintendent’s office, passing very quickly without exchanging my usual morning greeting with him. Mahran confirmed that they needed these cranes for the load out operation, and that they would be released back in three to four hours. Still concerned, I decided to go to the seafront to ensure the cranes would be returned on time. As soon as I left Mahran’s office, I heard Abu Al Kadeeb calling me from his office. As I entered the room I saw Ami Abu Adeeb sitting with him and smiling. Then he asked me why I had passed by him so quickly that morning. With

controlled emotions, I explained to him about the two cranes taken from my crew, Ami Abu Adeeb immediately jumped from his chair and headed towards the seafront and I followed. There were six cranes with their hooks close to the seawater. He started shouting in Arabic.“شو عم بتعملو, عم يتصيدوا سمك بالهوكس يا ... ““What are you doing? Are you fishing using the crane hooks, you ... ?” Everybody burst into laughter, and I was thankful to get my cranes back on time as agreed!

My First Offshore ExperienceA few weeks after completion of loading-out of a topside gathering structure for Al Bondouk Field, BP (the operator) asked RFY management to send a delegation to the offshore site location learn about the installation works carried out for these modules and the challenges associated with it.

I was chosen to travel to the field which made me quite anxious and excited! I collected all the technical documentation needed for the visit, and rushed to buy a professional camera to capture all the details.

Three days later I was on a flight to the UAE. The last part of my journey to the platform was by helicopter. As we approached our destination, I noticed a major oil spill surrounding the jack-up barge and the platform. We landed on the helipad and I was introduced to the superintendent in charge, who immediately organized a safety induction session (these procedures were new to

me!). I was then introduced to the operations team, who confirmed that the misalignment of some flange connections were the reason behind the oil spill, which happened during startup and commissioning. As a result, all hot works were banned on the platform. The work commenced immediately, nevertheless on the third day of my trip, I witnessed a major safety incident. During lunch break, the fire alarm went off so everyone rushed to their rooms to put on their life vests and assemble at the muster point. Unluckily for me, I could not find mine so I dashed immediately to the outside yard and saw a Water Inject Topside for Um Shief, Abu Dhabi: Fabrication & Assembly at RFY

huge fire under and surrounding the barge and the platform. Within minutes, several helicopters approached along with more than five tugboats with foam/water guns. Within half an hour the fire was extinguished.

Despite this dramatic incident, we managed to resolve all the misalignments adding spacers in just five days.

After Working HoursRiyah camp was an ideal place for sports and leisure after working hours. Fishing was a prominent sport in the palace and was enjoyed by most residents.

Mr. Khoury shared a passion for his sports. We would frequently see him horseback riding, playing tennis, swimming and walking. Almost every other day he would call me to partner with him in a game of doubles tennis. I must admit

he was also a rather tough challenger in singles tennis. On several occasions we would also see Mr. Khoury enjoying an afternoon ride on his horse, Riyah, followed by the famous dog, Nimer.

Nimer “the Brave”I recall one night when I was returning back to Qasr Al-Riyah from Salmiya around midnight. I noticed ten stray dogs running towards the entrance. As I passed them 200m later, I also noticed a man running away from them with

a dog ahead of him. As I got closer, the man started waving his hands at me and only as I got closer did I realize it was Tawfic Khoury. I stopped next to him and opened the window, Tawfic was shouting “أجبت و هللا جابك“ “You are here. God has sent you”. As I was about to open the door to quickly let Tawfic inside, Nimer, the “brave dog,” jumped into the car from the window before Tawfic was able to even get into the car!

RFY as One FamilyRFY was the epitome of one big happy family. Qasr Al-Riyah hosted the CCC community, which comprised employees and their family members. The Khourys’ house was always open to everyone at any time with no restrictions. You would frequently see Mrs. Khoury tending her garden and sharing morning coffee with CCC ladies. She would also host and organize many gatherings, feasts and social events to bring all families in the palace together. As a result, this strengthened the bonds and created a wonderful sense of a united family and community.BP Al Bundoq Field Gathering Facility, Abu Dhabi

Our company did it again in style this year. We successfully participated in ADIPEC both as attendance delegates and as exhibitors. The event took place in Abu Dhabi from 10-13 November 2014,

Our team consisted of Samer Khoury, Najib Khoury, Jamal Akl, Nazih Abdel Kader, Walid Salman and Rashid Shuhaibar. In addition to attending most of the interesting papers given during this high profile conference, our team met with some of our most important clients and partners, to name a few : Shell, Technip, BP, Chiyoda and Petrofac.

This conference attracted some 6,500 delegates giving over 60 conference sessions and dealt with the most recent interesting developments of the present and future of the global oil and gas industry.

As for the exhibition, our extremely well designed stand was among 1,800 exhibitors from 108 countries, noting that the exhibition was visited by some 70,000 people most of whom were directly or indirectly related to the oil and gas industry. This year, some of our sister companies like SICON, CCC Underwater and ACWa, joined our stand to give visitors a full picture of our group’s diversified capabilities.

The stand contents highlighted several of our projects including ongoing projects, and our involvement in solar energy, LNG, pipelines and oil and gas in general.

The efforts of Necip Nasrini, in ensuring the prominence of the high profile stand, proved to be extremely successful. Manning the stand and in addition to Nasrini were different CCC representatives, representatives of our sister companies and subsidiaries, Jaco Pienaar, Riad El Shanti, Vanessa Manoura , Alaa Mustapha, Nada Hassan and myself. We took turns to welcome our visitors and explain to them our successful achievements both in completed and ongoing projects.

Visit to the AcropolisThe Athens CSR Committee organized for CCC employees and their families a guided tour to the Acropolis Monuments, on the Acropolis Hill of Athens and the nearby new Acropolis Museum (on Friday, 10 October 2014).

The Parthenon and other main buildings on the Acropolis Hill were built by Pericles in the fifth century BC as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the inhabitants of Athens. The Parthenon took nine years to build and was completed in 438 BC and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world.

We also visited the nearby new Acropolis Museum to admire the exhibits illustrating 5000 years of history. It is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis. It includes (among the real marbles) exact replicas of the famous “Elgin Marbles”, currently on display in the British Museum in London.

The whole activity was very educational and successful and all participants look forward to enjoying similar activities in the future.

Supporting the Friends of the Child Nursery SchoolFriends of the Child is an organization that provides widespread assistance to over 450 families annually. One of the several programmes it runs is a day care for neglected children, who come from families living in severe poverty. Here the children eat, sleep and bathe and engage in educational and recreational programs. The Athens Committee is providing support to cover the nutrition needs of the children attending the nursery school.

Parenting Seminars and Support GroupsThis is a new Athens CSR Committee initiative which focuses on the well-being and work-life balance of CCC employees and their families. The complexities of modern life put heavy pressure on working people and their spouses, those having to adapt to changing environments and those living in multi-cultural surroundings. This new CSR initiative aims to help CCC parents to cope with these factors and to build their children’s resilience to cope with today’s high pressures and increasing expectations. The topics cover both children and teenager issues such as: understanding teen misbehaviour; peer pressure and bullying, discipline and fostering self-esteem. They also include mentoring of children and teenagers themselves. These sessions are offered by CK Mentoring who offer as well Parent Support Groups and the first Parenting session took place on 12 December 2014 at the Athens office.

Donation of Electronic Whiteboard to Special Needs Vocational Training WorkshopAlthough based in Greece’s capital Athens, the city called home by nearly half the country’s population, the Athens CSR Committee has always been open to supporting the efforts against social exclusion in challenging times. Such a distinguished effort is taking place at the Workshop of Special Vocational Educational and Training in Pylaia, Thessaloniki. A group of highly specialized teaching professionals and social workers are guiding around 50 students experiencing disorders such as cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, mental retardation, autism, vision impairment, even blindness, severe and mild disabilities, epilepsy just to name a few. Responding to the school’s request, CCC donated and installed in the main classroom an electronic whiteboard along with an iPad, where the latest software in special education can be utilized.

New Farm United Soccer ClubAustralia

R. N. JABARA

As part of CCC’s commitment to supporting local communities, CCC Australia sponsored the New Farm United Soccer Club in another strategic approach related to social needs in this community and atmosphere.

About the Club:

In 1986, local New Farm children commenced playing competitive soccer matches at the New Farm Park fields and the New Farm United Soccer Club (NFUSC) was officially formed.

Located in Brisbane’s suburb of New Farm and over the following 26 years the club grew into a vibrant junior club with over 250 boy and girl players ranging in age from six to seventeen. The facilities used by NFUSC are leased from Brisbane City Council and NFUSC has exclusive use for the support of community sport.

In 2013, CCC Australia became a Gold Sponsor of New Farm United Soccer club with CCC’s logo printed on four team jerseys for various ages for at least the coming three years. In addition to jerseys, the CCC logo is also displayed on the club’s notice board and the club’s website.

The President of NFUSC, Barry Neighbour, thanked CCC Australia for their sponsorship and contribution towards the club and local community.

“New Farm United Soccer Club is very appreciative of the generosity and commitment that CCC has demonstrated in taking on a Gold Sponsorship for our community club. The support of CCC plays an important role in helping our 100% volunteer-run club deliver a quality, inclusive and positive community sport experience to children and families in our local area.”

‘Helwa Ya Baladi’A. A. RAHMAN

The beauty of Egypt stems from its oldest places and continues to the newest, a multi-layered culture, which seems to accord equal respect to ancient and modern. Today, among the most popular places to visit are the monuments of the Nile Valley, the souks, mosques and churches and many other recreational sites.

Since CSR Egypt was founded, it took the responsibility of supporting tourism in Egypt by running an initiative called Helwa Ya Baladi (My Country Is Beautiful) in order to discover the beauty of Egypt and to visit historical places in particular which most of us have not yet seen. As well as promoting the tourism industry, employees would get a chance to meet in one place and increase acquaintances between them.

Christianity and JudaismOn Friday 7 November 10:00am quite a good number of CCC employees at the call of CSR initiative hired a couple of tour guides to illustrate and demonstrate the historical backgrounds which spread useful knowledge to the CCC attendees about the various monuments. It was a great opportunity to take plenty of fascinating pictures of those places as well as many photos of the group of employees.

The tour started with the Amr Ibn El-Aas mosque which is the first mosque built in Egypt and Africa, and the fourth mosque built in Islam after the mosques of Medina. Then the tour continued to the neighbouring Hanging Church, one of the most important churches. Its name comes from the fact that it was built over the Roman fortress of Babylon at a height of 13 meters above the ground. The tour concluded with a visit to the synagogue which was originally a temple, then turned into a church until the reign of Ahmad Ibn Tulun, when it became a temple again after his allegiance with the Jewish leader at that time, Abraham Ben Ezra. This temple is also known as the Temple of Ben Ezra.

The participants had a great time mixed with fun and everyone enriched their knowledge and discovered that Egypt is really beautiful and worth visiting.

All the participants were enthusiastic about joining a future trip, to be announced.

Clothes & Shoes DonationEgypt

A. A. RAHMAN

Helping less fortunate individuals who cannot afford to buy new clothes and shoes is one of CSR’s goals, in addition to clearing out unwanted clutter from our closets and allowing for space to buy new items.

The CCC Egypt CSR team took the occasion of Eid El-Adha as a great opportunity to help poor people by carrying out one of our annual initiatives.

We invited CCC employees in all offices and sites to participate in donating extra clothes and shoes. Each office and project allocated a space to compile donated items.

Arrangements with reputable charity foundations were made to collect the donated items on an agreed date and time from our offices and projects. Their responsibilities were not limited to collecting the donations only, but to washing, ironing, packing and delivering them to really needy people in Egypt.

We were glad of the results of this initiative which proved that CCC members did not spare their efforts to contribute with a good number of different items suitable for needy males and females of all groups and ages.

We felt that we could draw a smile on the faces of those who are in need.

CSR Activities in QatarH. ABOU HISHMEH

CCC believes that a company needs to be responsible for its actions socially, ethically and environmentally. CCC recognizes and understands its commitment to the communities in which we operate around the globe. We firmly believe that we can help in creating an active compliance with the spirit of law, ethical standards and international norms. Our approach is driven by three main principles:

• Collaborate and co-operate to make a social impact.

• Leverage our expertise and talent to address social issues.

• Create an impact that is long-lasting.

CCC Qatar participated in two SCR events in 2014. The first activity was the Blood Donation campaign and the second activity was the Beach Cleaning Day.

Why Blood Donation and Beach Cleaning Day?Blood donation is a core activity of CCC Corporate Social Responsibility Programme and it benefits more than just those who receive blood. Donating blood is advantageous for the giver as well due to the following personal and health benefits:

• Free health screening: every time you give blood, your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron levels are checked.

• Reduced risk of heart disease: some doctors and scientists believe that giving blood may prevent heart disease. Although still under investigation, numerous physicians have noted that blood donors typically have fewer cases of heart disease than non-donors.

• Boosts the production of red blood cells: the donation of blood reduces the number of red blood cells in the blood. The bone marrow immediately replenishes the lost cells. As a result, the blood of a donor is refreshed every time they donate because of the increased production of new blood cells.

• Psychological Advantage: acts of altruism make you feel good! Giving feels great, especially when you understand that one hour of your time and one pint of blood can make such a difference.

• Beach cleaning is not just about trash for CCC; it’s about the need for clean oceans, shorelines and waterways and about employees acting together to create lasting solutions to marine pollution. Our oceans and waterways have been a dumping ground for man-made debris. The harmful effects of marine debris are severe: negative economic and aesthetic impacts, harm and risk to human health and safety, injury and death to animals through entanglement and ingestion and habitat destruction.

Environmental AmbassadorsAbu Dhabi

M. MUSLIAR

As part of our CSR commitments, we have been rendering volunteering support by organizing awareness campaigns on environmental issues and community related programs for the local authorities here in Abu Dhabi. We are a member of the volunteering group called ‘Environmental Ambassadors’, formed by the Environmental Authority of Abu Dhabi, to sustain environmental awareness campaigns and community support programs.

The last two months were a busy period for the Environmental Ambassadors in community volunteering because of various new community related environmental initiatives introduced by the Agency in Abu Dhabi. “International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, CITES Awareness, Dugong Protection and Sustainable Campus” are some of the latest initiatives undertaken by EAD.

International Day for Preservation of the Ozone LayerThe authorities highlighted the danger of what will happen if ozone layer depletion continues at the present level and the potential dangers to the community due to the increase in skin cancer rates, weakened natural immunity of living beings, increase in certain eye diseases, increase in desertification and so on. EAD distributed campaign material and flyers to participating companies to post them in their offices and camps to ensure that the message reaches out to all sectors of the employees in the languages known to them and the communities living around.

CITES Campaign and Dugong ProtectionThough these are relatively nugatory areas as far as the companies are concerned, the local

authorities needed involvement of companies to reach out to certain segments of the community to ensure abidance of state rules and compliance of international commitments. Awareness campaigns were conducted at Mushrif Shopping Mall, Abu Dhabi and a drawing competition was organized for children to get the families attracted to the event.

Sustainable CampusA programmre review committee was convened by EAD; the committee members included academics, selected members from companies and EAD representatives. The authorities stressed the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. Education is one of the key strategies for achieving it and students are considered to be the true custodians of sustainability. An initiative meant to be spread all over UAE, it was formally launched by the authorities on 3 November 2014.

UAE Area fulfills its social commitments by joining various social and environmental programmes introduced by the government authorities and state owned community organizations entailing wide acceptance and appreciation from local authorities and the local community.

Five Steps towards a Greener Datacenter at Athens OfficeS. KAHOUSH

During the past few years, the ISD infrastructure team has dramatically improved the performance and reduced the costs associated with our datacenter at the Athens office. The target was to align with the company’s Go Green strategy. In our datacenter in Athens, we have followed the below five strategies to reach our goal:

1. VirtualizationBy using virtualization we were able to reduce the number of physical servers from 200 to 14 and thus decrease the carbon footprint.

2. Improved Overall Storage PracticesWe have applied several storage techniques to enhance storage efficiency and reduce costs.

a. Tiered Storage: Four-Tier storage helped us increase effective utilization of storage resources, improve our performance and reduce costs.

b. Data duplication: To improve backup speeds and better utilize the storage.

3. Hardware Refresh CycleReplacing older hardware every five years will result in significant cost and energy savings. New hardware now offers green, energy-efficient options, a smaller foot print and better management.

4. Datacenter AirflowWe have applied the following strategies to optimize the cooling in our datacenter:

a. Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle design: Equipment is placed on racks to ensure that air intake comes from a cold aisle and all output air is expelled into a hot aisle.

b. Datacenter Temperature: The datacenter should not feel like a freezer; overcooling in a datacenter is a common problem.

c. Replaced the air conditioners with VRF types (Variable Refrigerant Flow): The VRF results in superior energy savings, redundancy and sound levels as low as 23dB.

5. Multifunction Printers (MFP) and Managed Print Services (MPS) with SecurityBy choosing the right printer model that has all the features that the user needs in terms of printing and security, we were able to cut down the number of printers by more than half. Printing is now also secure as all the new MFPs have access card readers that will enable the users to use their existing security cards to collect their printouts.

What a Grandfather We Had… SAJI S. KHOURY

When it came to us, the word “NO” didn’t exist in Jiddo Said’s dictionary. Whenever we would have an argument with our parents, we would go and hide behind his dishdasha as, to each and every one in the family, his word was always the sacred, undisputable verdict.

Our grandparents always made sure we were all together for Easter, Christmas and New Year and many times for no specific reason at all but to be surrounded by their loved ones. We travelled the world with them and I owe them the strong bond I have with my cousins.

With my late grandmother Teta Wadad, they created a very sturdy family tree, a tree whose fruits are love, humility and generosity. A tree with roots anchored into the deepest soil of Safad. Jiddo loved Teta beyond words; he became a broken man after losing her. Knowing that they are together again is the only thing that eases our grief.

Every night after watching the news, Jiddo would call to check on us and tell us the latest stories. He cared a lot about our education and career plans. He always believed in us, even at times when we didn’t believe in ourselves. He taught us ethics, be it for hard work or for our daily life, not by lecturing but by leading by example. Jiddo Said was and will always be our role model.

It was important to him that we should always be on our best behavior and no matter how occupied he was, none of us, girls or boys, got away with an unshaved beard, ripped jeans, messy hair or a revealing top. Jiddo made us appreciate fine dining, hunting, travelling, as well as poetry, old proverbs and meals from his childhood. From our youngest age he taught us the art of entertaining. Whether he was angry, sad or sick, the minute guests came over he would forget his worries, put on a big smile and be the perfect host. We loved spending time with Jiddo because he was a treasure of stories. Stories filled with knowledge, great humor, memories and life lessons he carried with him over the span of nine decades.

Despite being very busy, he always made time for us, his grandchildren. Jiddo Said loved life; he never let his age get in his way; he was a real fighter. He never gave up swimming and the last time we played tennis, he was 85. He wouldn’t let anyone help him up the stairs, apart from young attractive ladies!! One of his hobbies was to always tease or joke with the ladies of our family or even the wives of his close friends. We were always amazed by the number of ladies that would come to talk and laugh with him at weddings and other functions. What was even more surprising was that he knew each and every

one of them.

“For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s” Holy Bible.
