Transcript of Sahli Nature Park News - Chippewa...

During this long, cold, season, many visitors have enjoyed the winter white beauty of Sahli Nature Park. Our bird feeders have attracted lots of visitors too, a black and white striped Red Bellied Woodpecker, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Tufted Titmouse, Gray Squirrels, Fox Squirrels, deer, rabbits and even a old gray Opossum on milder days. You can see the beauty of the park and our wildlife visitors by viewing photos on our Sahli Nature Park Facebook. Our Facebook page also includes interesting information on environmental topics and links to related sites. Each month, even throughout the winter, Girl Scout troops have taken turns patrolling our trails, cleaning up litter and broken branches and reporting fallen trees. Thank you Ladies! Spring will bring a wide variety of wildflowers. Almost every week, something new will be in bloom. It will make time to hike with your family, your dog, or by yourself. Bring a picnic lunch, and don’t forget your camera. Stop in at the cottage information center for information about the park and its wildlife and plants. Be sure to sign our guest book. Try your luck at fishing in the pond, but remember, it’s Catch and Release Only! In the early spring we will begin a habitat enrichment project by planting 80 seedlings of native plants that will provide food and shelter for wildlife including birds, butterflies and other insects. The Cub Scouts will help with the planting. Our pollinator gardens and wildflower meadows are nationally registered with the National Wildlife Federation and with Monarch Watch for providing wildlife habitat, especially for Monarch Butterflies. In June, at the Cottage Information Center, you can see live Monarch caterpillars as they transform into beautiful orange and black butterflies. This spring, the United States Monarch population will be the lowest ever recorded due to habitat loss and the use of pesticides. Find out how you can help these beautiful butterflies on your Facebook page and at the informational display in the cottage. During the past year, we have worked with several scout troops and helped them to earn their badges by conducting classes and nature walks. If you would like to arrange a class or a nature walk for your group or organization, please contact us by email at [email protected]. We always welcome volunteers. If you would like to help with trail maintenance, gardening, or nature activities, please contact us by email at [email protected].
