Science Lab Safety
Working in the science lab can be EXCITING!
However, the lab can be dangerous if proper safety rules are not followed at all times.
Science Lab This Way!
In order to prepare for a safe year in the science lab, we are going to review a few
basic safety rules….
Preparation is KEY!
Safety Rules To Follow
A teacher should always be present when entering the lab.
Leave all of your belongings outside the lab area (or in a designated area).
Safety Rules To Follow
No eating, drinking, or chewing gum in the lab.
Safety Rules To Follow
Never run (or push someone else) in the lab to avoid accidents.
This rule applies at all times.
Safety Rules To Follow
No shouting or messing around with anything or anyone.
Safety Rules To Follow
Tie back long hair and wear appropriate clothing that will protect your skin.
Safety Rules To Follow
Always wear your lab coat and gloves to protect your skin and clothing.
Safety Rules To Follow
Always wear safety goggles when you are working with chemicals or other substances that may get into your eyes.
Safety Rules To Follow
Wash your hands before and after an experiment.
Safety Rules To Follow
Read and follow all directions exactly as they are written. If in doubt, ask your teacher for help!
Safety Rules To Follow
Lab
Directions
Immediately tell your teacher if you get cut (or another injury) when performing an experiment.
Safety Rules To Follow
Never use broken (or chipped) glassware.
Safety Rules To Follow
Keep all materials (clothing, hair, papers, etc.) away from a flame (or heat source).
Safety Rules To Follow
Never reach across a flame.
Safety Rules To Follow
Always point a test tube away from you when heating it over a flame or other heat source.
Safety Rules To Follow
Never look directly into a test tube when mixing or heating chemicals.
Safety Rules To Follow
Test the temperature and use a clamp or tong when handling hot containers.
Safety Rules To Follow
Immediately tell your teacher if a chemical gets on your skin or clothing to find out what to do to clean it off.
Safety Rules To Follow
Never smell a chemical directly from the container. Wave your hand over the container and “waft” the fumes towards your nose.
Safety Rules To Follow
Never taste a chemical unless you are instructed by your teacher to do so.
Safety Rules To Follow
Keep lids on bottles (and containers) when not in use.
Safety Rules To Follow
Always clean up your work area and equipment after an experiment is completed. Equipment must be returned to its proper place.

Time for a Quiz!
Let’s test your science lab safety knowledge!
Lab Safety Quiz
Long hair must be secured to the back of your head.
True or False?
Lab Safety Quiz
You need to secure your hair to the back of your head to prevent it from getting in the way. If you have loose hair while using a Bunsen burner, it may get burned.
True
Lab Safety Quiz
What things do you need to wear before beginning any lab exercise?
A) Lab CoatB) GogglesC) GlovesD) All of these
Lab Safety Quiz
You should always wear goggles, a lab coat, and gloves before beginning any lab experiment. Follow this rule to prevent getting chemicals into your eyes and on your clothes and hands. After finishing in the lab, always wash your hands with soap.
D) All of these
Lab Safety Quiz
What should you do if a glass breakage occurs?
A) Leave it where it is without telling anyone.
B) Touch it to see if it is safe.C) Run out of the classroom.D) Immediately tell your teacher.
Lab Safety Quiz
If you accidentally break some glass, do not touch it because it may contain dangerous substances that may affect your skin or be poisonous. Tell your teacher immediately so it can be cleaned up as quickly as possible and not create a hazard for anyone else.
D) Immediately tell your teacher.
Lab Safety Quiz
What should you maintain in your lab work area?
A) A messy work space.B) A clean and tidy work space.C) Chemicals spread all around
you.D) Lots of food and drink.
Lab Safety Quiz
You should always maintain a clean work area because it helps you keep track of what you are doing. Be aware of what chemicals you are using and what you need to use them for. Never eat or drink in the lab!
B) A clean and tidy work space.
Lab Safety Quiz
What should you do if a flame from a burner leaps out of the burner toward you?
A) Touch it with your finger to turn off the fire.B) Touch the flame to see how hot it is. C) Get out of the way and turn off the gas
immediately (or tell your teacher too).D) None of these.
Lab Safety Quiz
If you are using a Bunsen burner and the flame leaps out toward you, turn off the gas immediately to prevent getting burned. Always stay a safe distance away from the Bunsen burner while using it.
C) Get out of the way and turn off the gas immediately (or tell your teacher too).
Lab Safety Quiz
Always point a test tube or bottle that is being heated toward you and others.
True or False?
Lab Safety Quiz
Chemicals can splash or boil out of a heated test tube or bottle. Never hold a test tube toward you or others because it may break and chemicals may splash onto your clothes. Always be aware while holding a test tube: remember always point it AWAY from you and other people.
False
Lab Safety Quiz
If you are heating a liquid, what should you never do?
A) Heat the liquid in a closed container.B) Add boiling chips to the container. C) Heat the liquid in an open container.D) All of these.
Lab Safety Quiz
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER heat a closed container because the expanding gases produced may blow the container apart, injuring you and/or others. Heating a liquid in an open container means the gases produced can escape safely.
A) Heat the liquid in a closed container.
Lab Safety Quiz
What should you NEVER do if you have heated a container?
A) Pick up the container with a clamp.B) Test its temperature. C) Pick up the container with your hands.D) All of the these.
Lab Safety Quiz
If you can feel the heat on the back of your hand when you hold it near the container, it is too hot to handle. Use a clamp or tongs when handling hot containers. If you are unsure of whether a container is hot, pick it up with tongs or a clamp anyway, just to be safe.
C) Pick up the container with your hands.
Lab Safety Quiz
Never heat a chemical unless instructed to do so.
True or False?
Lab Safety Quiz
Some chemicals are so strong that if you heat them, they may explode. A chemical that is harmless when cool can be dangerous when heated. Always listen to what your teacher tells you.
True
Lab Safety Quiz
What should you NEVER do in the lab?
A) Mess around with your friends.B) Run while holding a beaker with
chemicals. C) Play practical jokes on people.D) All of the these.
Lab Safety Quiz
Never play in the lab. If you do, you may break a beaker that may contain dangerous chemicals. Always remain at your lab station and do not interfere with other students’ work.
