•Documents used to describe and implement the SMS may be referred to as Safety Management Manual. Documentation should be kept in a form that Company considers most effective. Each ship should carry on board all documentation relevant to that ship.

Verification and control Verification and control

• The Administration, another Contracting Government at the request of the Administration or an organization recognized by the Administration shall periodically verify the proper functioning of the ship’s safety management system. (SOLAS reg. IX/6)

• MCA carries out initial, intermediate (2½ yr) & renewal (5 yr) audits of UK ships.
