BackgroundIt is now widely recognized that a positive safety culture is

essential for effective safety management. Many companies are dedicating significant resources to strengthening their safety culture, and would benefit from learning from each

other. Saint Mary’s University and CN are proud to present this safety culture symposium, designed to bring together

safety experts, regulators, academia, practitioners and senior decision makers from a wide range of international

organizations and companies, including transportation, petrochemical and energy.

This two-day event will feature presentations and case studies from safety experts, as well as a choice of highly interactive

workshop sessions addressing some of the key safety challenges facing industry. Don’t miss this unique opportunity

to network with professionals from across North America, exchange ideas and share best practices, trends, directions and findings of current research and human factor analysis.

Professor John Carroll MIT - Keynote Speaker Day 1John Carroll is the Morris A. Adelman Professor of Management, a Professor of Organization Studies and Engineering Systems, at the MIT Sloan School of Management. John is one of the world’s leading authorities on safety culture. His recent work focuses on industries that manage significant hazards, such as nuclear power, petrochemicals, and healthcare.

Mr. Nickolas Stavropoulos - Keynote Speaker Day 2Nick Stavropoulos, is the Executive Vice President, Gas Operations at PG&E. Nick is an engaging and passionate speaker and he will provide practical advice on how companies can improve their culture. Nick will share PG&E’s experience of creating safety first culture. PG&E have dramatically improved their safety performance and this improvement involved a cultural change.

Panel sessionsThe symposium will include three panel sessions with leading Canadian and international experts who will share best practices and lessons learned. The first panel session on safety culture assessment, will include presentations from Transport Canada and IAEA and provide an overview of assessment strategies. The second panel session will explore the role of external agencies in promoting a positive safety culture with presentations from the Claudine Bradley (NEB) and Michael Bourque (RAC). The third panel will provide a review of practical strategies to create a positive safety culture with presentations from ExxonMobil and CN.

Working sessionsIn addition symposium participants will work in groups to identify safety culture research priorities and identify practical ways that external agencies could support safety culture improvement.
