SAFETY CORNER
Summer Safety Checklist
A healthy body temperature is maintained by the nervous
system. As body temperature increases, the body tries to
maintain its normal temperature by transferring heat.
Sweating and blood flow to the skin help keep our bodies
cool. Heat-related illnesses occur when our bodies can no
longer transfer enough heat to keep us cool.
Tips to stay safe during extreme heat:
• Listen to local weather forecasts and stay aware of
upcoming temperature changes
• Eat light - the more calories you take in, the more body
heat you produce
• Stay hydrated - drink plenty of water before work and
throughout the day
• Drink at least 8 ounces of fluid per half hour
• Avoid liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large
amounts of sugar
• Choose the proper type and amount of clothing - cotton
allows skin to breathe and absorbs sweat
• Take frequent breaks in shady areas
• Always wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher
• Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors
• If you take medication regularly, ask your doctor for advice
about hot-weather activity and your risk of getting a heat-
related illness
• Get trained in first aid to learn how to treat heat-related
emergencies Don’t sweat through the symptoms.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
GALLO MECHANICAL, LLC ISSUE NO. 6 – JUNE 2017
NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT, DAVID GALLO:
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer, and that everyone has had a chance to take a vacation or to spend time with family and friends. In addition to all of our work, summer time is especially busy with many school renovations. Gallo Mechanical has moved its East office from Loxley, AL to Pensacola, FL as we continue to do work further east. Additionally, we did not need all of the office or warehouse space we had, so with a smaller office space we are geared up to be more efficient and put more emphasis on the work in the field. We currently have big jobs in Pensacola, Panama City, and we just secured another just outside of Fort Walton - Hurlburt Air Force Base. Many opportunities continue to come our way. This is because of our ability to not only deliver on time, but also safely to our customers. Some of the jobs starting up this quarter are University of Holy Cross Dorm, University of Holy Cross Central Plant Expansions, and KIPP Believe School. Always remember that each of us represents the company in everything we do. We are able to grow and succeed because of this mindset. Look forward to seeing you all soon. -David Gallo

If you or someone you know experiences these types of symptoms, lay the worker down in a cool
area with his or her legs raised, remove excessive layers of clothing, and give up to 1 liter of water. Do
not give them anything to drink if the they vomit. Cool the worker with cold, wet cloths and a fan. If
symptoms persist, seek medical attention. -Kody Morgan, Safety Director
SPOTLIGHT JOBS OUR LADY OF THE LAKE, CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA
Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital is a new facility located off I-10 in Baton Rouge. We have
partnered with Airtrol Mechanical in a joint venture partnership for this 24.6-million-dollar project under
contract with Brasfield and Gorrie. Ronald Varnado has the lead as General Superintendent, and
projects to employ approximately 36 plumbers from Local 198 for the plumbing alone. He anticipates
the HVAC piping to employ almost as much, also hired from Local 198. B&C Sheet Metal and Apex
Insulation round out the project team with Trane equipment and controls.
This project will add 373,000 square feet and 88 beds to the FMOL family of healthcare facilities;
specifically designed for the treatment of children. Included in the project is a St. Jude research and
treatment facility as well as oncology, radiation and imaging departments. A medical office building
attached to the hospital will also be constructed under a separate contract with Milton J. Womack, Inc.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) of all systems is led by Chip Prats, with Ray McDonald taking
the project through fabrication. The information from the BIM process is then transferred to the Trimble
team lead by Scott Campbell to establish the hanger and sleeve locations with pin-point precision.

Domestic Water: 10 miles
Sanitary Waste and Vent: 10 miles
Storm Drain: 2 miles
HVAC Piping: 8 miles

CHAPELLE HIGH SCHOOL HVAC REPLACEMENT
METAIRIE, LA
Gallo Mechanical is the prime contractor for this HVAC replacement project at Archbishop Chapelle
High School. The scope of the job focuses on the replacement of the existing chill water HVAC system
with a new Daikin VRF system, which includes two new outside air units.
This job is one of three fast-pace short-term projects we are excited to be part of. The other two are
at Xavier University and Hahnville High School. The work for this job started in late May of this year and
is expected to be completed on time by the end of the summer break.
Clark “Corky” Dennis, who is a first-time Gallo Foreman, is taking the lead on the job. Corky is very
excited to take on this opportunity and to become a part of the Gallo team.

10 WAYS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE
AND DIAL DOWN STRESS LEVELS
Stress may be inevitable, but how you deal with it is largely up to you. Here are some tools to help you manage the stress in your life.
It seems like everyone is stressed out these days - from your co-workers, to your friends, to the person standing next to you in line.
Stress, by itself, isn't necessarily bad. Low or even moderate amounts of stress can be good for us, provided we manage it in healthy ways. But poorly managed stress can take a
toll. Heart disease, fatigue, and obesity are just a few of the potential consequences.
If stress is bothering you, consider the following 10 ways to regain control:
1. Recognize your symptoms. Your signs of stress may be different from someone else's. Some people get angry. Others have trouble concentrating or making decisions. Some feel worried or depressed. For some, stress leads to physical symptoms such as headache, back pain, upset stomach, or trouble sleeping.
2. Identify the sources. What situations trigger your stress? Among other things, your stress may be linked to your family, health, work, or personal relationships. Keep in mind that stress is often caused by a change in your life, negative or positive. Marriage, divorce, job loss, or a promotion may all increase stress.
3. Evaluate your coping strategies. Examine the ways in which you deal with situations that cause you stress. Responses like smoking, drinking alcohol, or eating too much may feel good in the short run, but they can cause long-term harm.
4. Learn to say 'no.' Sometimes the best way to deal with unnecessary stress is to avoid it. Know your limits, and refuse to take on more responsibilities than you can handle.
5. Plan ahead. Don't let your to-do list get out of control. Think about your day, and decide which tasks are the most important. Do those items first. Let other tasks drop to the bottom of - or even off - your list.
6. Create time to relax. It's not always easy, but it's important to make time for yourself. Take vacations or other breaks. Make time to read a good book, listen to music, watch a comedy, or just have a warm cup of tea. Some people find deep breathing exercises helpful for relieving stress.
7. Exercise regularly. A brisk walk, a bike ride, and a trip to the gym are just some of the physical activities that can help prevent or reduce stress. Aim to get 2 hours and 30 minutes of exercise each week. Talk to your doctor before increasing your activity level.
8. Eat well. Eating balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day will help you cope with stress by keeping you energized and focused. Also, cut back on caffeine. You'll feel more relaxed and will likely sleep better.
9. Talk to family and friends. Simply talking with supportive people can often bring stress relief, even if the stressful situation doesn't change. By the same token, limit the time you spend with people who only add to your stress.
10. Get help. If stress seems overwhelming, consider talking to a mental-health professional. He or she can offer healthy stress-busting techniques.
