SGS CONSUMER TESTING SERVICES HARDLINES NO. 219/11 DEC 2011 SAFEGUARDS EU AMENDS FOOD CONTACT PLASTICS REGULATION In Sept 2011, we informed you that the EU was proposing to amend and correct the food contact plastics Regulation (EU) 10/2011¹. On 10 December 2011, Commission Regulation (EU) 1282/2011, amending and correcting Regulation (EU) 10/2011, was published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU)². Under the amendment: 15 new substances were included into the Union List 8 existing authorised substances were amended and corrected The specific migration of melamine (2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine) was lowered from 30 mg/kg to 2.5 mg/kg. Food contact plastics which do not comply with this new Regulation but have been lawfully placed on the market before 1 January 2012 may continue to be placed on the market until 1 January 2013. These food contact plastics may remain on the market until exhaustion of stocks. The new law takes effect on 30 December 2011. EU AMENDS FOOD CONTACT PLASTICS REGULATION In Sept 2011, we informed you that the EU was proposing to amend and correct the food contact plastics Regulation (EU) 10/2011¹. On 10 December 2011, Commission Regulation (EU) 1282/2011, amending and

correcting Regulation (EU) 10/2011, was published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU)².

Under the amendment:

15 new substances were included into the Union List

8 existing authorised substances were amended and corrected

The specific migration of melamine (2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine) was lowered

from 30 mg/kg to 2.5 mg/kg.

Food contact plastics which do not
