SAFEGUARD HAMILTON Leading the way together Assisting the community in SAFEGUARDING properties against BREAK & ENTERS and GRAFFITI www.hamiltonpolice.on.ca Residential and Small Business Security Audits SAFEGUARD OBJECTIVE AUXILIARY POLICE The Auxiliary Branch is made up of volunteers who are authorized by the Hamilton Police Service. Over the past ten years, the Hamilton community has experienced over 2,000 residential and commercial Break and Enters annually. The objective of Safeguard Hamilton is to have specially trained Hamilton Police Service Auxiliary Officers conduct free residential and small business security audits using the principals of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). This free educational service provides home and small business owners useful suggestions and advice in how to best guard against potential Break & Enters and vandalism. The audit identifies areas that need attention on the property to increase security and reduce risk. Upon completion of the assessment, the owner shall be given a copy of the audit. The implementiations of strategies are at the discretion of the property owner. Auxiliary officers are committed to working in partnership with the police in addressing community- based crime prevention initiatives. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design The application of CPTED techniques may decrease security problems by up to 50%. Natural Surveillance Are the views of the property obscured from the street or neighbours? Are there hiding spots around doors or windows? Access Control Do people access the property in ways other than intended? Do existing access routes lack natural surveillance? Territorial Reinforcement Do people routinely trespass on the property? Does the property have an un-lived in or un-kept look? MARK YOUR PROPERTY To discourage theft of valuables and simplify the identification of stolen property, it is recommended that valuables be marked or engraved with an identification number in a highly visible spot, accompanied by a second hidden number when possible. Property owners should also retain accurate records of their property including, make, model, and serial numbers. BE PROACTIVE! • TIPS •Lock all outside doors and windows•before leaving the premise or going tobed

Use quality materials and construction for•doors, locks, and windows

Keep garage door closed and locked•

Do not leave ladders on the exterior of the•property

Use adequate exterior lighting•

Trim trees and shrubs so they cannot•serve as hiding places

Never leave keys in a “secret” hiding•place on the exterior of the property

Ensure the house number is visible from•the street

Keep a detailed inventory of valuable•possessions, including photos or video

Consider the use of residential or•commercial alarm systems

Call 9-1-1 if you see any suspicious neighbourhood activity

• If the property is marked by graffiti, removeit as soon as possible. The quick removal ofgraffiti is the most effective means to prevent further acts of vandalism

• Increase lighting and visibility in vulnerableareas

• Restrict access to walls by planting“creepers” such as ivy or thorny bushes

• Use chain link fences, as opposed to otherfences which may create a solid surface forgraffiti

• In extreme cases, graffiti resistantcoatings may be applied to protect walls. This can be very expensive, however itreplaces the cost of having to continually clean up graffiti with costly chemicals and equipment

• Install video surveillance to monitorisolated areas
