Safe Spaces II: The Next Step

A COMPREHENSIVE 3 YEAR FUNDING CAMPAIGN TO RAISE $2.25 MILLION

Concord Coalition to End Homelessness (CCEH) is committed to ending homelessness in Concord because we believe that every person has value, and ending homelessness is absolutely possible.

Our first Safe Spaces campaign in 2017, a huge success, provided sufficient funds to build the life-saving Emergency Winter Shelter and support all of our programs for three years.

Now we’re asking you to take The Next Step toward ending homelessness in Greater Concord.

Donations to Safe Spaces II will allow us to purchase a downtown building and renovate it into four apartments, providing safe and supported homes to people who have lived in shelters, cars and the woods. Donations will also keep our essential programs operating for another three years, as well as provide seed money for future projects.

If you joined us for the first Safe Spaces, THANK YOU! We hope we can count on you for Safe Spaces II: The Next Step. If you are a new supporter of CCEH, we hope you will give as generously as you are able.

Our goal: $2.25 Million, with $1 Million coming from individual donors

The Impact of Your Contribution on Ending HomelessnessWhat does it mean to end homelessness? It means a community has the services in place to prevent homelessness whenever possible, and when homelessness does occur, to make it a rare, brief, and one-time experience. Four communities in the United States have already achieved this goal!*

Crucial to this system is providing “permanent supportive housing” (see below) for the most vulnerable people experiencing long-term homelessness in the Concord community. The first Safe Spaces campaign allowed us to provide the Emergency Winter Shelter; the Next Step is permanent housing!

EMERGENCY WINTER SHELTER

On life-threateningly cold winter nights, the Emergency Winter Shelter keeps people alive, while CCEH seeks permanent housing solutions.

RESOURCE CENTER

Imagine trying to interview for a job if you didn’t have a mailing address, and you couldn't take a shower or wash your clothes. The Resource Center is where you get the help you need to move forward, out of homelessness. It provides:

Permanent Supportive Housing

HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: GREEN STREET APARTMENTS

To help meet the affordable housing crisis in New Hampshire, CCEH will provide safe, affordable, and supported housing by:

Converting a downtown office building into four one-bedroom affordable apartments

Prioritizing these units for individuals who are experiencing homelessness

Providing on-going case manager support as they start their new lives

Insuring that residents will pay only 30% of their income towards rent

HOUSING FIRST CONCORD

Since 2016, CCEH has been able to end homelessness for some of Concord’s most vulnerable long-term homeless individuals through our Housing First Concord program by:

Housing fourteen individuals who rent apartments from private landlords

Providing rental assistance

Supporting them through on-going case management services

Leveraging over $135,000 annually in federal rental assistance

The Safety Net is Still Essential

We don’t give up on anyone.

Served 192 individuals and averaged 33 people per night during the first season in the new building (2018-19)

Open mid-December through March

Accommodates up to 40 adults per night

Access to shower, laundry, computer, and phone

Case manager assistance while applying for housing & jobs

Connections with other services (including mental health or substance use disorder treatment)

Averaging 45 people a day, serving over 600 individuals per year

A one-time private investment of $200,000 creates four new apartments AND brings in approximately $34,000 annually in on-going rental assistance. This makes the apartments affordable even to someone with only disability income, paying just 30% of their income towards rent.

“SEED MONEY” FOR FUTURE STEPS:

($200,000 FROM PRIVATE DONATIONS)

CCEH is continuously seeking the next opportunity to create more permanent housing options so people can leave homelessness. Green Street Apartments is The Next Step, but hardly the last step.

When the next opportunity arises, having seed money in place allows us to move quickly and take another step toward ending homelessness in Concord.

Dedication of The Tom Fredenburg HouseAs part of Safe Spaces II: The Next Step, CCEH is dedicating and naming the Resource Center building in honor and memory of Tom Fredenburg.

Tom was committed to the cause of ending homelessness, and it was truly his vision and generosity that made it possible for CCEH to purchase this property and build the new Emergency Winter Shelter in the backyard. He put countless hours of hard work into the building so it would better serve our guests. He will be dearly missed, but Safe Spaces II: The Next Step will carry on his vision of providing homes for people who struggle with homelessness.

Dear Friends,

Ending homelessness is possible, and it’s the right thing to do– for the well-being of the person who is homeless, and for the well-being of the entire community.

During the first Safe Spaces, the Concord community showed its extraordinary vision, compassion, and drive. CCEH is asking for your support again to move the needle on ending homelessness in Concord. Thank you for partnering with us in this great cause!
