ECP Early College students held the first election for their Student Government Association. Central Elementary had sev-eral members of the law enforcement community participate in their Lunch Buddy program during September.

The officers greeted students as they entered the cafeteria with smiles, high fives, or a handshake. Students were also given silver badge stick-ers by the officers.

All ECPPS elementary schools welcome volunteers to be a part of the Lunch Buddy program .... a great way to make a student's day.

Pasquotank Elementary Receives HelmetsECPPS Releases District & School Improvement PlansThe Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Board of Education is consider-ing approval of a District Improvement Plan as well as School Improvement Plans for the six low performing schools. The District Improvement Plan is required this year as a result of ECPPS being deemed a low performing district based on data for 2016-2017. All schools are required to have an approved School Improvement Plan; however, those schools considered low performing will have their plans approved by the Board in November, along with the District Improvement Plan.

The Board of Education wants to ensure parents, staff and students are aware of the proposed plans and have the opportunity to review them and provide comments. The District Improvement Plan is available online at www.ecpps.k12.nc.us, with hard copies available at the ECPPS Administrative Offices, 1200 Halstead Boulevard, as well as at each school. The School Improvement Plans for Central Elementary, J.C. Sawyer Elementary, Pasquotank Elementary, P.W. Moore Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and River Road Middle School, are also available online, at the ECPPS Administrative Offices and in their respective school’s main office.

All comments and suggestions must be submitted in writing at the ECPPS Administrative Offices, located at 1200 Halstead Boulevard, no later than Monday, November 13, 2017, by 5:00 pm. Questions regarding these plans should be directed to Tracy Davenport, ECPPS Director of Federal Programs. Ms. Davenport may be reached at 252.335.2981, ext. 147.

Each year, ECPPS holds an event to honor and recognize the service of those who have retired. This year's event was held on Monday, October 16th. We had 19 retirees this year, with nine attending the recognition event.

Those recognized included: Stephanie Brown, Chuck Cullens, Julie Fearing, Clifton Griffin, Lennie Hughes, Jr., Sandra Ivey, Vanessa James, Pearl James, Cindy Jennings, Debra Keys, Cowanis Lamb-Akai, Robert Lee, Blanche Magee, Rebecca McGough, Margaret Mickey, Reginald Riddick, Lyle Strathearn, William Walton, and Brenda Watts.

Weeksville 5th Graders Explore Makey Makey

Susan Goodwin, physical education teacher at Pasquotank Elementary, received a bicycle helmet grant for 5th grade students through NCDOT (North Carolina Department of Transportation). The school received 50 helmets through the grant and had an additional donation of 15 helmets through Active Routes to School. The grant and donation provided enough helmets for all 5th graders as well as some students in the Exceptional Children’s Department.

On Wednesday, Sept. 27th, Sergeant Todd Wagner and Deputy Anthony Alexander, ECPPS School Resource Officers with Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Department, presented information on bicycle safety and fitted the bicycle helmets on each student.

Students in Michelle Chappell's 5th grade class are beginning to explore creative invention through the use of Makey Makey. Makey Makey is a col-laborative project between Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum of the MIT Media Lab, and SparkFun Electronics. It's an invention kit that encourages people to find creative ways to interact with their computers, by using everyday objects as a replace-ment for the keyboard and mouse.

The students are getting familiar with the program currently, but will soon be creating their own games. This project will serve as an introduction to coding. More information on Makey Makey can be found at https://www.makeymakey.com/.

Education Foundation Plans Annual MeetingThe Education Foundation for ECPPS will host their 28th Annual Meeting on November 18, 2017, presented by Perry Auto Group. The event will be held at the YMCA at the Pines from 6 pm - 9 pm.

The keynote speaker will be Michael Bonner, a native of Northeastern North Carolina, who won North Carolina Teacher of the Year, appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show and recently published his first book Get Up or Give Up. Tickets are $40 ($30 for cer-tified ECPPS staff ) and are available at Albemarle Audiology, the ECPPS Admin Offices, and The Flour Girls. For questions or sponsorship opportunities, please call Sarah Noble at 252-599-6892.

ECP Backpacks Receives GrantECP Backpacks is a new program formed this year through the ECPPS Education Foundation, and in partnership with Food Bank of the Albemarle, to provide weekend food for students who may not have adequate nutritional meals when not in school.

It is a community supported group with well over 20 churches and organizations working together to help eliminate hunger. This program is cur-rently supporting students within ECPPS, with future plans to include other groups. These organizations pick up food in bulk, package and deliver it to the schools to go home with students on Fridays. The goal, initially, was to serve 200 students each weekend; however, 275 students were served the first weekend.

ECP Backpacks has received grants and funding from many different resources. They were most recently presented a $25,000 check from a grant awarded by the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation, specifically the HCWGMW Donor Advised Fund.

For information on how to partner or support this project, please contact Tammy W. Sawyer (252.335.2981) or Paul Batson (919.901.9756).
