AN INNOVATIVE AND UNIQUE SUPPLEMENT AN INTEGRATED CANCER THERAPY

Poly-MVA is revolut ionary compound crea ted through an innovative process whereby the mineral palladium is bound to alpha lipoic acid and vitamin B1 (thiamine). When alpha lipoic acid, a unique and powerful antioxidant with multiple health benefits, is connected to an electrically charged mineral (palladium) and joined with thiamin(B1), the resulting complex is both water and fat soluable, dramatically increasing the entire body's absorption of Poly-MVA at the cellular level.* With vitamins B1, B2 and B12, specific trace minerals and amino acids, this unique complex and formulation creates a synergy, action and function not found in any other supplement. It is designed to provide energy for the body's sys tems as wel l as protect ce l ls f rom oxidat ion through i t s proprietary and patented formulation. Poly-MVA was formulated by Dr. Merrill Garnett, who over the past 48 years has conducted research on the actions of DNA within normal and abnormal cells. His studies focus on the intersection between biochemistry, physics and what Dr. Garnett calls "electrogenetics," the action of electrons and their energy transfer mechanism in relation to gene expression and proper metabolism. This product not only protects but supports cellular function which gives it properties like no other product in the world; this is why it can assist in so many situations.

· Superior antioxidant and free radical protection *· Fast acting, easy to use and quick results *· Supports energy production at the cellular level *· Enhances quality of life *

The recent and continuing research on Poly-MVA and what it can accomplish with cancer patients and other diseases is impressive and includes the following:

Board Certified Oncologist, Dr. James W. ForsytheM.D., H.M.D., conducted an investigation on variousStage IV Cancers with 500+ patients over a 7-yearperiod, observing a 70% overall positive response rate.

Ongoing research by independent laboratories hasconfirmed the effectiveness of Poly-MVA in multiplecancer types, including:

Brain Lung Breast SkinProstate Liver

Ischemia studies demonstrated that acute, post and

prophylactic administration of Poly-MVA limits

damage and protects cellular function.

Phase One human safety trials have been conductedin the PUNCH Study (Poly-MVA Utilized asNeuroprotection against Chronic Hypertension).

A 1000-patient animal study with a veterinaryoncologist resulted in an 86% improved qualityof life response in the animals’ health.

message from the Founder,The Annie Appleseed projectby Ann Fonfa

Every year as I write my greetings to conference attendees, I seek to balance the good news and the not-so-good.

It is usually easy to do. The good news is that more and more people understand that integrating natural strategies into their cancer treatment is a REALLY GOOD idea.

The bad news is often that the oncology community seems to lag tremendously when it comes to accepting this concept. One reason is the issue of how docs (and others) are trained to understand evidence. Since all pharmaceuticals (drugs) are harmful to the body (they call it ‘side’ effects), extensive testing is needed. Even with that it is often ‘discovered’ that a particular drug does more harm than good, or just much harm. With natural substances, it is quite different. It is rare (except for allergic reactions) for most people to have problems. Thus it has been our belief that somewhat different standards are needed. For many years, in seeking to establish the CAM (complementary & alternative) position, supporters argued that the same level of testing was needed to demonstrate that these things worked.

Well where did that get us? Sham acupuncture being used as the ‘other’ in a trial of acupuncture’s value, and the like. Many small trials (due to cost) that end up unable to ‘prove’ anything definitive, lots of studies using mice or cell culture and almost always individual elements separately examined. Crazy stuff and totally wrong.

The entire clinical trial program is based on HUGE sums being spent to get FDA approval, get a drug to the marketplace basically as fast as may be, and get the money back quickly (tremendously high drug prices these days). Well we think this is a crappy system. It does not honor people with diseases, and we contend that we are not even the main focus of the current paradigm. (I love that word because one always hears that the current paradigm must shift, but if it does, it is at a glacial pace).

The good news is ALWAYS that there are so MANY PATHS TO WELLNESS. I have spoken over the almost twenty years of my advocacy, to thousands of people who have successfully dealt or are dealing with cancer. So many different natural strategies really make a difference in their lives. Don’t let fear guide your decisions. The Annie Appleseed Project gathers information, spreads it widely and hopes everyone will make more informed treatment decisions.

Enjoy the conference, share the information you gain, widely.

DedicationThis conference is dedicated to the more than one half-million Americans (2012) and more than 7 million worldwide (2007 stats) dy-ing of cancer annually.

Increase in Incidence and mortalityMuch of the increase in cancer in recent years has been attributed to tobacco use, (In the 20th century, tobacco use caused about 100 million deaths around the world. In this century, that figure is expected to rise to over 1 billion people. Most of these will occur in developing countries – US News and World Report 12/17/07)

Lifestyle risk reduction/preventionAbout one-third of cancer incidence is said to be related to nutritional intake and presumed to be preventable. Physical activity in ‘developed’ countries needs to be increased. And for the most part environmental triggers are still being ignored. For sure the increase in cancer incidence is not related to ‘inherited’ genes. Our genes need some sort of trigger(s) to go haywire – cancer is the name we give when our cells don’t function normally, and refuse to die (apoptosis is normal cell death).

Cause of DeathAre we sure that all cancer-related deaths are being reported? Sometimes we hear stories of people whose death certificate reads heart failure, kidney, or liver. Yes, but the prior trouble was cancer – it may be under-reported.

In the NewsThose of us who read the obituaries are seeing more and more cancer deaths. Celebrities step forward to talk about their own diagnosis. Does a week go

by anymore where we don’t hear about cancer. This is not because we are paying attention, but because cancer incidence is on the RISE.

Please take the information you learn here during this conference, and from our extensive website, and share it widely. Reducing risk of cancer occurrence, recurrence, of toxicities from conventional treatments, and learning about alternative therapies, will benefit everyone.

From their website: “The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) is an independent, non-profit organization authorized by Congress. Its mission is to fund research that will provide patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed health care decisions. PCORI is committed to continuously seeking input from a broad range of stakeholders to guide its work. More information is available at www.pcori.org”.

Back in July 2011, PCORI asked for input which we gave, roughly fitting into three of their categories as shown below.

PCORI Suggestions

1. Development and prioritization of research questions

2. Design of study components, including selection of population, interventions, comparators, outcomes, and timing/setting

3. Processes of clinical decision-making/care delivery

The Annie Appleseed Project represents those with cancer or at risk who are interested in or using natural approaches to their disease. This can be in the form of complementary therapies – combining them with conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy or surgery.

We also speak for those for whom these treatments have failed. Although the current language of medicine speaks of patients failing treatment, we are quite clear that it is

the other way. These folks need help AFTER they have finished conventional therapies that have not worked for them. As everyone knows, and statistics show, about 500,000 people die annually from cancer in the United States.

We also support everyone, including people at risk who seek to make and incorporate lifestyle changes that may reduce their risk of cancer, risk of recurrence, or even risks of other diseases.

Since we are a nation that is growing sicker, with a population that has learned to eat and behave against their own healthy interests, we have many suggestions for study design.

Thus we urge encouraging all study designs to incorporate healthy behaviors as part of the whole.

That would look like this: Both arms that are testing any outcome include information on healthier eating, i.e. more fruits and vegetables, less fried foods, soda and red meat. Everyone learns how to do an exercise or physical activity – must it be the same for all? Not from our perspective because the idea is to build healthier populations who will better benefit from conventional medicine. (Some could walk, some might need to swim to avoid injury, some may bike, etc.) Studies already show that people who combine eating in a healthier way with physical activity fare better in all that they do – less illness, better quality of life, longer lives, etc.

Additionally we urge that studies explore those natural substances (including the

Have you heard of pCOrI – patient Centered Outcomes research Institute? by Ann Fonfa

10

category of dietary supplements) that are not able to be patented and thus are avoided by industry. Some smaller studies, none Level 1, indicate these substances can enhance conventional cancer treatments as well as avoid or reduce the adverse effects (toxicities) that are short and long-term. Our 8000+ page website features abstracts on these substances, but there are many more extant studies.

It is shocking that this information has not been widely disseminated but since there has been such a strong emphasis on RTCs as THE gold standard, these substances have been bypassed.

We do not find this acceptable as the adverse effects of conventional cancer treatment go against the very first commandment given to the medical world – First do no harm(s).

Although our specific area of expertise is in cancer medicine, it is clear that natural substances could be impactful in almost every area. I urge PCORCI to expand their vision and incorporate natural medicine into their portfolio.

Salicinium is an exceptionally effective immune-modulating molecule. Salicinium is a globally patented, proprietary

formula that enables the macrophage of the immune system to recognize malignant cells. The “cloak”

which allows anaerobic cells to hide from the immune system is removed--eliminating their protection--and allowing

the innate immune system to protect “self” by eliminating pathogens.

Salicinium is an anti-angiogenesis agent. Most products in this category interrupt or restrict blood flow to the tumor

thus slowing down growth. Rather than restricting the supply to the tumor, Salicinium halts the demand for the

supply from within the tumor itself. Vascularization is greatly reduced and the immune system attacks the now

defenseless cells, pushing lymphatic fluid into the tumor to break it apart and metabolize away necrosing material.

Circulating tumor cells are at the forefront of an ongoing or escalating malignant process. CTCs are the least

developed, least protected of all malignant cells. CTC testing has shown Salicinium affects these cells first,

therefore halting the spread of the malignancy and providing immediate control of the disease. The unseen

metastasized tumorization is the next to be affected. Primary and secondary tumors contain the most fully-developed

and protected malignant cells and require additional time to address, therefore Salicinium therapy (whether I.V. or

oral) must be continued without interruption until further testing shows no indicators of malignancy.

• Salicinium has no toxic side effects

• Salicinium can be used alone or as an adjunct to other complementary therapies or as an

integrative therapy to allopathic treatments

• Salicinium is completely targeted to malignant cells as it will only enter anaerobic cells

• Salicinium allows Gc-Maf to resume operation and greatly increases Immunoglobulin G

• Salicinium enables the immune system to kill malignant cells

Salicinium can only be administered by a Registered Salicinium Physician.

He completed a rotating internship and Pathology residency in the US Army and spent pay-back time as a pathologist with the Army at Fort Bragg, NC, The Republic of South Vietnam, and Letterman General Army Hospital at the Presidio, San Francisco. Dr. Forsythe did an Internal Medicine residency in San Francisco at Children’s Hospital, and following completion went directly into a Medical Oncology fellowship at UC San Francisco, completed in 1973. He practiced medicine for two years in San Francisco and then

moved to Reno, Nevada, where he has been for the last 36 years. He started the cancer wards at all three major hospitals in Northern Nevada and was chief of the Veteran’s Administration Oncology Program during the 1970’s. Dr. Forsythe was associate professor of medicine at the University of Nevada Reno Medical School, and is currently on the faculty in the Department of Alternative Medicine. About 15 years ago he took boards in Homeopathy to use Naturopathic and Homeopathic treatments for cancer patients, along with low-dose chemotherapy. At the present time he specializes in chemo-sensitivity testing and molecular finger-printing, and the use of Insulin-potentiated, low-dose, non-toxic chemotherapy. Dr. Forsythe has run several studies over the past ten years. In his last 500-patient study over a five-year period, running between June 2005 to June 2010, results showed a 45% overall survival rate using the Forsythe Immune Therapy, which is a combination of various natural products including Poly-MVA, and several Homeopathic medications, vitamins, hormones, and low-dose chemotherapy. This result compares very favorably with conventional literature.

LIFE OVER CANCER The Block Center Program for Integrative Cancer Treatment

By Keith Block, M.D. Foreword by Andrew Weil, M.D.

LIFE OVER CANCER is complete with the latest medical studies and in-depth information on all aspects of a patient’s physical and emotional well-being and in the book, Dr. Block explains:

• How to optimize a patient’s “terrain” in order to inhibit malignant growth, mitigate treatment toxicity, improve quality of life and provide a “survivor’s edge.”

• Why the completion of chemotherapy, or a surgical “got it all,” should not be the end of treatment, and the steps each patient can actively take to help ensure they remain cancer-free.

• Revolutionary approaches that can improve treatment tolerance, efficacy, and outcome such as time-sensitive chemotherapy (chronomodulated chemotherapy).

• For patients who have been told there’s nothing else to be done, a “no stone left unturned” plan that might include vaccines and targeted molecular and immune therapies.

• How patients can take a proactive approach to preventing a recurrence, including key components of a “remission maintenance” program.

“I believe in Keith’s program and would go to the Block Center if I were facing a diagnosis of cancer. It is where I have and will continue to send my friends and family members. Life Over Cancer is the program every cancer patient deserves in order to have the best chance for recovery and restoration of health.”

–Dr. Andrew Weil, from the foreword of Life Over Cancer

“Keith Block is a pioneer and leader in integrative cancer care and one of its premier practitioners. This clear, meticulously documented, practical book is a lifeline for anyone who has cancer. It should be required reading for all oncologists.” –James S. Gordon, M.D., former chair, White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy; author of Unstuck: Your Guide to the Seven Stage Journey Out of Depression “Keith Block is one of the great pioneers of integrative oncology. This important book is essential reading for patients and health professionals alike. Block’s approach is indicative of much of the future of this critically important field of medicine.” —Michael Lerner, Ph.D.,  President,  Commonweal  Cofounder,  Commonweal  Cancer  Help  Program   "Keith Block, M.D., is the most prominent integrative cancer specialist in the U.S. His new book, Life Over Cancer, is the manifesto of the movement for a kinder and more effective form of managing this terrible disease. In a sane world, Block would be director of the National Cancer Institute." -Ralph Moss, Ph.D., Author of The Moss Reports and ADVANCES in Cancer Treatment Newsletter

Keith I. Block, M.D is a pioneer in the field of integrative oncology and Medical Director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment in Skokie, Illinois. He continued his training at Brandeis and Harvard University until deciding to pursue an artist’s career. He earned an MFA from Ohio State University and taught at Columbus College of Art and Design. As a graduate student in Art, Master Gu discovered the treasures of his own culture through the spiritual iconography of Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism and Western mystic traditions. He also practiced Yoga, Tantric Buddhism and Qigong. In 1997 he returned to China for Qigong trainings under Dr. Pang Ming, a Qigong Grandmaster trained in western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. Dr. Pang synthesizes his profound medical knowledge of the old and new healing sciences into the ancient qigong practice and presents this integrative system of self-healing and cultivation for the present pragmatic world. In the 1980s, he founded the world’s largest medicine-less hospital known as “Huaxia Zhineng Qigong Training and Recovery Center”. Through enormous scientific research (3000 research papers were published during the 90’s), and more than 20 years of experimenting with Qigong healing, Wisdom Healing Qigong has developed into a scientific system of working with energy to improve life, including healing. Master Gu observed thousands of cases of chronic and “incurable” diseases being healed at the Zhineng Medicineless Hospital. Witnessing these profound healing experiences inspired his dedication to the teaching and practice of Qigong healing. Through this practice, he recovered from his own chronic conditions of asthma, scoliosis, back pain

and kidney weakness. And in working with his students he found his life passion, purpose, and fulfillment in this union of spiritual practice and applied healing wisdom. He lives and teaches with his wife Linling, who is also a gifted teacher and healer, with their 4-year old son whom they call their “grandmaster.”

Marcel Hernandez, ND trained at Bastyr University in Seattle. After he and his wife and partner, Dr. Connie, left their busy naturopathic practice in Vermont, they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where Dr. Marcel

served as Director of Wellness Insurance Programs for American Western Life Insurance Company and maintained a private practice as well. While at American Western Life, Dr. Marcel developed and directed a revolutionary managed care health insurance program, which stressed preventive medicine and self care, and provided reimbursement for visits to alternative health care providers. With Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel has co-founded and co-directed high-profile naturopathic clinics in Brattleboro, Vermont, and in Palo Alto, California. When not seeing patients in Palo Alto, Dr. Marcel is directing the development of a naturopathic retreat center, situated on three tropical acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the Big Island of Hawaii. As a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Marcel uses an integrated therapeutic approach to help his patients address their health concerns. Among the therapies he employs are clinical nutrition, vitamin and mineral therapy, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, lifestyle counseling and bioenergetic medicine. Although he practices general family medicine and is able to address a wide variety of health issues, Dr. Marcel has developed particular expertise in men’s health, pediatrics and digestive disturbances. He is the author of “Your Child’s Health,” a manual for parents which emphasizes nutritional strategies for raising healthy children. Dr. Marcel is currently working on a new book, “Prostate Cancer: The Definitive Guide for Making the Best Decisions.” Please visit his personal web site, www.NaturallyHealthyProstate.com for more information on Dr. Marcel’s approach to prostate care.

Madalyn Suozzo has been a full-time professional mind-body Seer, Medical Clairvoyant and healer researching the healing arts, consciousness and how the body regenerates for over 30 years. Her

curiosity about this unique ability to intuitively see into the cells and create healing resonance has led her to the discovery of practical and scientific uses of metaphysics. As a healing intuitive consultant she has insights into the naturally occurring wave particle, cellular and subtle body dimensions of life. Using energy medicine, transformative practices, deep nutrition, atomic physics and your intention and awareness, she found that many imbalances can be ‘miraculously’ corrected. Her work has been mentioned in the books “Montauk Revisited: A Look at Synchronicity in Time” by Peter Moon, “Fifty Algae Stories of Hope, Health and Freedom” by Lisa C. Moore, DC. She has taught workshops and practiced energy healing techniques across the United States and Canada. “Sometime in the not too distant past, healing stopped being an art and people stopped being connected to their own ‘knowing.’ My goal is to widen these narrow tenets and bring healing back to being the multidimensional art it actually is. Information and ability exist in each of us to create self-healing and life extension beyond the limits of what is thought of as normal. True healing unites both science with spirit; thinking with feeling.”

Gwen Stritter, MD, has over ten years of experience in clinical advocacy. She trained with Dr. Mark Renneker, the nationally-known clinical advocate, for 11 months. She coauthored the chapter on clinical advocacy (chapter

19) in the textbook, Patient Advocacy for Healthcare Quality: Strategies for Achieving Patient Centered Care (2007). Dr. Stritter’s medical training was at Stanford Medical School and Hospital. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Disease, the Society of Integrative Oncology, the American Society for Clinical Oncology and the American Pain Society. Dr. Stritter is double board-certified

in anesthesiology and pain medicine (both from the American Board of Anesthesiology). She served as the director of the Kaiser San Jose Pain Management Unit (San Jose, CA).

Helayne Waldman had a long career in media and education then decided to pursue her passion for nutrition and healthy living at Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition. Upon graduating, she opened a practice

in Oakland, California where she specializes in breast cancer support, weight and blood sugar management and healthy aging. She is a current faculty member at Bauman College, on the board of The Annie Appleseed Project (advancing education and advocacy for people with cancer) and writes and lectures widely in the San Francisco Bay Area. See her website at turning-the-tables.com.

Jeannine Walston is co-founder and Executive Director of EmbodiWorks. She has extensive experience in cancer education and advocacy, health care policy, and both conventional and integrative cancer

care. Jeannine’s career includes work in the U.S. Congress, government agencies, cancer non-profit organizations, and health care practices. As a writer, trainer, and spokesperson, Jeannine educated the public for several years about alternative health care through the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Clearinghouse. Chosen as the first person to serve in the Food and Drug Administration’s Patient Consultant Program as an advocate in the cancer drug development process, Jeannine was also selected to work as a consumer representative in a National Cancer Institute Cooperative Group where she offered the patient’s perspective about clinical trials design. Earlier in her career after work in the U.S. Congress as a Legislative Assistant, Jeannine was a policy advocate and lobbyist for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and assisted the President of The Children’s Cause for Cancer Advocacy. Quantum physics increasingly recognizes that consciousness is a critical factor in what determines reality. Chronic diseases like cancer most always have a deeper source than your physical body. When your body cannot get a message through directly to your conscious mind, it resorts to indirect signals, modifying blood

flow, digestive juices, changing respiratory function and mutating cells. By learning to understand the feedback mechanism between what is being shown in your body and the important communications happening within, you can become a conscious contributor in the process of your own healing.

past participant’s Comments From Our Evidence-based Complementary & Alternative Cancer Therapies Conference

“Dr. Gwen Stritter’s summary of what works to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence was the best I have seen. It was great to have all I have read about complementary and alternative medicine for women with breast cancer, categorized by level and quality of evidence. After explaining what good, mediocre, and poor quality evidence looks like, she proceeded to present the patient behaviors most likely to reduce the risk of recurrent breast cancer. Beginning with the highest quality research studies, she explained what the behaviors were (i.e. low fat diet vs. high fat diet, etc.), whether the studies were large (phase 3 trials) and what the outcomes were (42% reduction in recurrence for ER negative breast cancer). After listening to Dr. Stritter I feel confident enough to share summary results with my fellow survivors”.

– E.J.

“It was my first event and it met and exceeded my expectations. I had learned of the event years ago from a friend who was living with Stage 4 breast cancer, seeking to learn of ways to manage her quality of life and improve her health. When I finally attended, this year, I was awed at the wealth of information about ways I could stay healthy long-term. I made new friends and met several women, some whom have been living a “cleaner” lifestyle for years and were cancer free, and others who had been living with advanced breast cancer for 5, 10 or 20 years, and were still alive, and giving much attribution to having integrated complementary and alternative strategies with traditional treatments”.

– M. K.

“Most significant conference I have attended thus far. What a powerful, cutting-edge source of Integrated , Complementary Health Services that is Saving Lives and exposing the harmful risks in just having traditional Treatment. Get Educated and join this Health care Movement”.

– D.M.

“Enjoying my first Annie Appleseed Project conference this weekend... I am learning so much and meeting so many new friends, thank you!”

– D.B.

“I walked away with a better knowledge for the importance of a clean and mainly plant based diet. I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious dishes served at the conference including the daily green juice. I appreciate the nutrient dense foods because many conferences I’ve attended in the past have served potatoes chips and soda. The thought and care behind the food planning makes it feel as if the conference practiced what was preached.”

– R.L.

“Patient and caregiver panels lifted me. They told their stories of doing the research, getting second and third opinions, always looking for new options—they never gave up, even at the end—or all the way to their new beginning (depending on their individual situation). They reminded me it’s about research, perseverance, hope, not settling for less than you can get.”

– R.P.

“Just thinking about the organic foods makes me salivate; all so lovingly served with some beautiful presentations, especially the Asian lunch, outstanding”.

Qigong and Cancer: A Key for Treatment, recovery, and preventionby master mingtong Gu with Susan Drouilhet, The Chi Center

Introduction“My pulse reacted in the instant I heard my doctor’s voice on the phone. I knew something was wrong. After all it was 7 p.m. on a Friday night. She told me as gently and calmly as her kind heart and clinical duty could muster, that the biopsy was positive. And just like that, I was thrown into the gauntlet of western medicine. Between the medical explanations and treatments, I heard from deep within myself that there was something more to invite to this recovery recipe and I found it in Qigong.” – Denise Minter

Where to BeginA diagnosis of cancer can be a very scary event. When suddenly your entire life—with all your hopes, dreams and goals—flashes before your eyes; when out of the blue you find yourself staring into the face of this most feared diagnosis, where do you turn? Where do you possibly begin?

Choose to begin within. First of all, know that there are options. Instead of being a life (or death) sentence, a diagnosis of cancer can truly become an opportunity for grounding oneself in joy, peace and practices of healing, health and awakening. And Wisdom Healing Qigong helps you do just that.

According to Master Mingtong Gu, Qigong helps us transform our body, heart, mind and energy to realize our deepest intentions of radiant health, true happiness, joy and profound peace; in other words, through the practices of Qigong, we can effect profound physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual transformations.

By including Qigong in your treatment plan, you become a more active proponent of your healing, and whether you pursue contemporary Western medical treatment, complementary and/or alternative treatments or some combination of these, Qigong helps you bring your best self forward to facilitate and augment your treatment and recovery.

What is Qigong? More than 4,000 years ago, monks discovered the qi (pronounced “chee”) or energy within all life. Over the ensuing millennia, these masters developed gentle movements, visualizations, meditations and sound healing practices that awaken the mind to guide this qi to benefit the health and healing of the entire body.i Modern neuroscience, with its ability to scan the brain and witness neuronal processes, now confirms what Qigong masters have known and taught for centuries—in essence, how to rewire the brain

Abstract -- Qigong (pronounced chee-Gong )brings your best self forward to facilitate and augment cancer treatment, recovery and prevention. Well-suited to all ages and abilities, the mind-body practice of Qigong supports your steps ahead and is an essential tool in your treatment plan. Wisdom Healing Qigong is the form of Qigong precisely focused on medical conditions, improving energy and wellness. Modern neuroscience tests now show that Qigong has deep positive and lasting healthy effects on the mind, brain and body. The steps to guide how, when and where to learn Qigong are defined, including the Golden Keys of Wisdom Healing Qigong.

1st Annual West Coast Meeting

26

and subsequently, change one’s physiology. In the language of Qigong, this process is “awakening your pure qi;” in neuroscientific terms, the ability of the brain to change its shape and function is called neuroplasticity, and science is now discovering that this potential lasts throughout one’s lifetime. As the ancient masters discovered and modern laboratories can now monitor, where we focus our mind directly impacts the neural pathways of the brain. According to neuropsychologist Rick Hanson, PhD, “What happens in your mind changes your brain, both temporarily and in lasting ways; neurons that fire together, wire together.”ii

Why Choose Wisdom Healing Qigong(WHQ)? Qigong wisdom has fostered medical, martial arts and spiritual practices. While any form of Qigong brings beneficial focus, balance and strength to the mind, brain and body, Wisdom Healing Qigong trains students to build their own abilities to heal from aging, illness and injury. “I received my master’s training in Wisdom Healing Qigong (WHQ) from Grandmaster Pang at the Zhineng Medical Center, the largest Qigong medicine-less hospital in China. Because WHQ brings together ancient qigong teachings and modern medical diagnoses for all types of illness and injury, including cancer, I learned to match the practice to specific medical conditions. Qigong helps activate both prevention and recovery, and many students practice it concurrently with other treatments to magnify the results of modern medicine,” says Master Gu.

In Western medicine, the focus in treatment is often on symptoms. Many modern diagnostic tools measure the symptoms of an illness, and many pharmaceuticals are designed to alleviate these symptoms. To the Qigong practitioner,

disease begins with a disruption in energy flow (qi). Qigong is designed to realign this energetic flow, bringing forth a balanced, harmonized condition. Qigong focuses our mind to open up energy blockages, which contribute to illness, aging and stress, and trains our attention to stimulate a healthy, balanced activity in all our cells. Master Gu describes this teaching in his book, Sound Healing Technologies: “Qigong returns us to our natural, healthy, balanced state of being…[it] repatterns the physical, emotional and mental/spiritual energy that is not flowing freely, bringing forth natural states of happiness, compassion, openness and clarity.”

Science continues to confirm the positive effects of Qigong on cancer outcomes. “There is a lot of evidence suggesting that Qigong therapy has an inhibitory effect on cancer growth, both in vitro and in vivo studies, as well as in clinical observation.”iii Other research shows improvement across a host of factors, including body

weight, body strength, appetite, and cessation of diarrhea, liver function, macrophage phagocytosis, and erythrocyte sedimentation.iv These findings and others can be found at the California-based Qigong Institute (www.qigonginstitute.org), which compiles scientific research studies on the effects of Qigong on cancer and a multitude of other health conditions.

How to Begin practicing QigongThere are several Golden Keys of Qigong, and each provides a path to deeper healing.

BEGIN WHERE YOu ARE. The first Golden Key of Wisdom Healing Qigong is Haola – or “All is well. So be it”. This key reminds you to be gentle with yourself starting in the present moment. “Haola activates your ability to accept the goodness within your body and

The Annie Appleseed Project

27

life. Healing starts with your willingness to live with the fundamental goodness within you,” says Master Gu. A mindful practice like Qigong welcomes you in your current ability and state of health, and we begin by freeing ourselves of any judgment for having illness and how we got to where we are. It is important to remember that people of any age or ability can practice Qigong and feel the benefits of this gentle moving meditation. As our Qigong study deepens, the practice of Haola gets easier, and our ability to handle any decisions associated with cancer treatment and recovery improves.

With the guidance of a wise teacher, Qigong students learn about the second Golden Key. With Inner Smile, we discover that radiant joy can be found in the face of cancer and that smiling—especially internally—is profoundly beneficial to one’s recovery. Medical science now reports that positive feelings strengthen the immune system and that stress releases cortisolvi, which contributes to suppression of the immune system, inhibition of stem cell production, also increased blood sugar levels, and other harmful metabolic changes.

FIND A TEACHER. A Qigong Master has studied and trained extensively and is deeply experienced in working with many health challenges as well as in leading qi trainings and intensive personal practice. In ancient times, students might journey for days to study with a master. Now students can learn Qigong in a multitude of easily accessible ways: via live in-person classes, local workshops and retreats, and at-a-distance online courses. Master Gu explains: “I founded The Chi Center in the San Francisco Bay Area in order to bring my master training to a wide audience. Our healing and teaching environment makes it possible for students–both those in the United States and those abroad—to study and practice with plenty of support whether facing health challenges or interested in teacher training to help others.” Qigong teachers who have trained with a Master can also be selected to support Qigong learning and practice. There are many levels of Qigong teacher, from community leader to teacher-in-training to certified teacher.

ENROLL IN A LOCAL OR ONLINE COuRSE. There are many ways to learn

1st Annual West Coast Meeting

28

Qigong: from a local or online course, with a book or DVD, or through intensive group retreats. “When I launched the online Pure Qi courses, it was to bring these teachings to people anywhere in the world, to give them the support for daily practice that fits their health, home and work schedules,” says Master Gu. “We also offer weekend events and longer retreats for deeper, concentrated study.”

ATTEND A RETREAT. For some, the word “retreat” brings up images of laid-back rest and lounging poolside with a good book for a few lazy days. Chi Center Wisdom Healing Qigong Retreats are different. They too renew you, but also give you the tools to thrive every day of your journey through illness and other challenges, after the retreat experience. A WHQ Retreat provides the time, place and guidance to deeply immerse in learning, reset unhealthy patterns and intensify the healing journey. “I created the Wisdom Healing Intensive Retreats modeled on the Zhineng Qigong Center of China, where we treated more than 200,000 people with over 185 different illnesses, including cancer, with a 95% effective improvement rate,” says Master Gu. The Chi Center’s Retreats are the first of their kind in North America, providing concentrated study over a 5-30 day period for people facing the challenges of illness, injury and aging. In a group setting, participants can experience a profound sense of the healing potential of Qi, develop a personal practice fitting their condition and establish both the motivation and skills for continued results at home.

“Before I traveled the 2,000 miles to The Chi Center’s Healing Intensive Retreat in Petaluma, California, I didn’t know Master Mingtong Gu and I knew little about Qigong, but I did know that my life would change… Some participants had active cancer; some, like myself, had just completed cancer treatment and were recovering from that. … You might think it was hard to be in an environment where there

was so much apparent health challenge, not only yours but everyone else’s, too. Actually, the retreat was one of the most vibrantly alive and joyful gatherings I have ever experienced. It was truly amazing to be in this vessel of transformation where you learn how to access and direct healing energy towards oneself or another, or even the whole world, regardless of your circumstances,” says Susan Drouilhet, based on her experience at the 2010 Chi Center Healing Intensive Retreat.

In addition to the focus on one’s own healing journey, another Golden Key, Love and Service, gets practiced in Retreat as participants deepen not only their own learning but also support others during and after the Retreat experience. “I met others at the Retreat with Parkinson’s, diabetes, Lyme’s disease, addiction, chronic pain, emotional trauma. We found a retreat environment where our individual health journeys were respected and guided to support and enhance our work with our physicians and other health care providers at home,” Susan continues.

COMMIT TO DEDICATED PRACTICE. Dedicated daily Qigong practice reveals ever deeper and more beneficial layers of learning and healing. Diligent Practice is another essential Golden Key to realize better wellness. “[The] wise ones realized that the deep healing and awakening has to come from the person. The practice makes this possible,” writes Master Gu in Wisdom Healing Qigong.vii A 100-day Qigong practice is recommended to train the mind and brain for deeper, individual results. Any age and ability can practice this form of Qigong, as Wisdom Healing Qigong can be done standing, sitting, or lying down. Because neuroscientists now know that the brain has mirror neurons, that can copy or mirror when we watch someone else do the movements, even just watching a teacher or fellow student practicing Qigong can help exercise the viewer’s brain.

Erin M. Hall, M.S. Genetica DNA Laboratories, Inc. She is responsible for the technical operations of the laboratory, as well as, all aspects of the daily casework involving DNA identity sample processing, analysis and quality assurance.

Up until 1955, the polio epidemic was considered the most frightening public health crisis of the post-war United States; in 1952 alone there were almost 58,000 cases reported nationally. The polio virus, in an infected individual, can cause central nervous system damage leading to muscle weakness and even potentially paralysis or death. Jonas Salk, the man credited with developing the first successful polio vaccine, used monkey kidney tissue culture to grow the live polio virus in preparation for manufacturing the vaccine. Salk used the human cancer cell line called “HeLa” (cancer cells isolated in 1951 from a tumor found in the cervix of a 31 year old female named Henrietta Lacks) to test the vaccine prior to its use in human patients(1). The process of growing human cancer cells in vitro (Latin for “in the glass”), also known as “human cell culture”, became a common laboratory technique in the 1950’s. Cancer cells, as is their nature are “immortal” and can grow uncontrollably both in the human body (in the form of tumors) and in a dish outside the body making cancer cell cultures the perfect model for studying many different facets of biology, including cancer itself.

Today, researchers are dealing with cell line misidentification and cross-contamination as a common occurrence in cancer cell culture

studies. It is estimated that 18-36% of all actively growing cancer cell line cultures are misidentified and/or cross-contaminated with a different cancer cell line(2,6). For many cancer patients, time is of the essence in finding and initiating a treatment that will work for their specific cancer type; if cancer researchers are performing studies utilizing the wrong tissue or cancer type the drugs they are testing will not work as studied. For example, imagine

testing drugs meant for breast cancer treatments on a cell culture of cancer cells isolated from a brain tumor, the results of the experiments become questionable and potentially unfounded for the purpose of breast cancer studies; all done without the researcher even realizing there was a mix-up in the cell lines. Millions of dollars are spent every year on wasted research and this is happening

not just here in the United States but around the world as well.

Cell line misidentification and cross-contamination has been around for more than 50 years. It was finally brought to light in 1966 by Stanley Gartler, who reported that 19 supposedly independent human cell lines were in fact HeLa cells(3). HeLa cells, still used today, are known to be very fast growing and robust, even able to contaminate other cell cultures by aerosol droplets! There was much resistance to Gartler’s findings because researchers didn’t

1st Annual West Coast Meeting

32

want to admit that the studies done using those contaminated cell lines may be potentially invalid. Walter Nelson-Rees was one scientist who didn’t want Gartler’s findings to be “swept under the rug”. Nelson-Rees highlighted the papers and the scientists who were publishing experimental data using misidentified cell lines and for this, in 1981, he lost his contract with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) because his behavior was deemed “unscientific”(4). From 1981 and on, misidentification went unchecked and even cell line repositories continued to distribute lines under their false names(4).

Cell line misidentification and cross-contamination continues today because the problem has not been properly brought to the attention of researchers. Many researchers learn about the service the hard way, i.e. at the last minute when the research journal requests confirmation of authentication before considering the article for publication. If a researcher tests before publication and finds that the cell line is misidentified, at what point along the experimental process did it get mislabeled or contaminated? Was it the first week of experiments? Was it 2 years into the project? Or maybe it was mislabeled right before the last experiment after 5 long years of hard work. In a survey that profiled 483 researchers who actively use cell cultures, only 33% authenticate their cell lines and 35% obtained their lines from other laboratories rather than a certified cell line repository, such as American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) (4). Cancer researchers are expected to use only the best reagents and supplies but the one aspect of the experiment that may be the most important, i.e. the cell line, is consistently and explicitly overlooked. Without verifying the identity of the cell line before the start of the experiments, every two months during active growth, and just prior to publication the researcher may waste months, if not years (!), of research time, money and resources. Retracting past journal articles because the researcher cannot replicate

their own results is distressing not only to the researchers involved but it also damages the reputation of the institution that supports the studies as well; not to mention the impact this problem would have on the advancement of treatments for cancer patients.

Today, researchers have a highly accurate and relatively inexpensive methodology to test and validate their cell lines. Researchers can perform short tandem repeat (STR) DNA profiling of their cell lines and compare the profile to the DNA of the original cancer patient, a test that costs less than $100. The STR DNA

profile of a human cell line is like a person’s fingerprint, it is unique to that individual. STR testing is now the “gold standard” of human identification testing and is routinely used by the FBI in profiling convicted offenders for the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). STR profiling is a straightforward and effective way for a researcher to confirm that the cell line they think they have been using for the past 5 years, is in fact, the genuine cell line (i.e. the breast cancer cell line, HCC70, is in fact HCC70 and not a brain cancer cell line).

To continue the advancement towards the elimination of the problem of cell line misidentification and cross-contamination, ATCC, in early 2012, released a set of guidelines written by the international Standard Development Organization (SDO) workgroup;

The Annie Appleseed Project

33

these guidelines provide researchers with information on the use of STR DNA profiling for the purpose of cell line authentication(5).

In addition, the NIH, a major funding agency, now officially recognizes that cell line misidentification is a serious problem in the research community. They state in a

formal notice issued on their website (NOT-OD-08-017) that grant applications that fail to employ acceptable experimental practices would not be looked upon favorably and would potentially not fare well in the journal review process. The NIH encourages all peer reviewers and researchers to consider this problem carefully “in order to protect and promote the validity of the science [they] support”. Many journals, such as those published by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) require a statement in the research article as to whether cells used in the submitted manuscript were authenticated. Not properly authenticating the lines may prohibit the article from being published when peer reviewed.

In the near future, with the help of all of these influential supporters and with the cooperation of cancer researchers, cell line authentication will become a routine quality control check in every research laboratory in the United States and around the world. For the researcher the studies mean more papers published and more grant funding, but for the cancer patient it could literally mean life or death.

The Subconscious mind and Cancerby Avinoam Lerner - Author of: The New Cancer Paradigm - Immersive Healing Improves the Quality of Life and the Effectiveness of Chemo, radiation and Surgery

Most cancer Patients agree there is more than just a tumor and more than what doctors can see, measure or touch. They also recognize there is much more to healing and health than only following the regimens of surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.

Medical treatment focuses only on the physical body. It treats the physical tumor independently of the rest of the body. Immersive Healing focuses on the non-physical aspects of cancer considered to be the root cause of the illness.

Illness is not just a physical event. To truly heal, we must transcend the one dimensional mind set of illness embedded in the current medical approach. We must look beyond genetics, germs, and pollutants in search for the real root cause of cancer, the unheard cry of the Mind.

For years scientists have dreamed of using the body’s Immune defenses to fight cancer. Remarkable research and progress has been made that will allow us to harness an external force that can boost immune function. Immersive Healing provides a path to mobilize the body’s Immune defenses to defeat cancer from within.

The physical symptoms of cancer are the resulting tangible evidence of what we are REALLY feeling deep inside in our mind. They represent a state of inner disharmony of a “wounded” Mind. Unlike a physical injury, a Wounded Mind cannot be detected simply by looking at an x-ray, chart, scanner or picture. We know something is very wrong only when

a significant change takes place in our body, a change that we cannot ignore. Unlike a cut, puncture, ruptured appendix, broken leg, hip replacement, etc., Mind Wounds cannot be treated with a surgical knife, medication or healed by the will power of the Conscious Mind.

Distorted perceptions, harmful belief systems and negative outlook and attitude inflame our Mind wounds. Although these wounds are not in visible sight, they are very much within us. They reside in the Subconscious Mind, between the tangible and intangible. The Subconscious Mind then is where we must look next if we are to leave no stone unturned on the journey towards improved health and healing. This is the New Cancer Paradigm which states that true and lasting healing cannot be achieved by treating only the body. We must also treat and heal the Mind. A Mind Wound is the intangible cause, and cancer is its tangible effect. Healing the cause heals its effect.

The New Cancer Paradigm represents a fundamental shift in thinking about where, why and how the root cause and origin of cancer is healed. It draws its strength of our ability to influence our mental activity, address and heal the disharmonious Mind patterns promoting illness from within.

The way to treat, heal and ultimately prevent cancer from returning is to eliminate its sub-conscious root cause. This is what Immersive Healing is designed to do.

1st Annual West Coast Meeting

36

Immersive Healing is a breakthrough method-ology for healing cancer. It works alongside all current cancer treatments to improve recovery and outcomes for patients of all ages and with all types of cancer.

Immersive Healing works in the realm of the Subconscious Mind where all bodily and im-mune functions are governed. It is an Immu-notherapeutic approach based on three basic premises:

1. The body’s natural Immune System is designed to defend against all illnesses, cancer included.

2. Harmful States of Mind (stress and hopelessness, etc.) and negative Subconscious Programming, suppress the proper functioning of the body’s natural Immune System.

3. If these harmful states of Mind can be healed, the Immune System can be revived and cancer prevented or healed.

The power of the Immune System to defend and sustain the body is enormous. To explain the level of this power, think of death and what happens to the body after we die. All bodily functions stop in death, including the Im-mune System. Without a functioning Immune System, the body begins to decay in just a few hours after bacteria and other biological agents invade. These agents do not affect us in any way when we are alive and armed with a fortified Immune System.

Physiological changes to the body are, in-fact, directly influenced by changes in our mental state. Restoring the mental state to one of har-mony and balance will restore balance to the physical body.

Non-physical aspects, such as harmful beliefs, erroneous perceptions and emotional con-flicts, reside within the Subconscious Mind. They “weigh heavily” on the Immune System

and disrupt its proper functioning. In so doing, they produce the conditions whereby illness can thrive within the body. A weak and poorly functioning Immune System needs to be re-vived and healed in order to combat the illness.

Immersive Healing utilizes hypnosis as its therapeutic vehicle. Hypnosis let us bypass of the Critical Factor of the Conscious Mind (one’s ability to consciously critique, reason and judge) and gain access to the Subconscious. The Subconscious Mind is the part of the Mind

that governs all bodily functions, including immune function. Working in the realm of the Subconscious Mind we can identify and heal erroneous mental programming which produced the conditions where illness can flourish.

Subconscious programming is not our fault! People around us, their words, comments, suggestion, unique circumstances and life events that we had no control over, have programmed us since birth. We cannot change the facts about our past, but we can change the way we perceive them. Our responsibility and only measure of control is in our ability to identify (as adults) the faulty parts in our subconscious programming (i.e., distorted perceptions and self-limiting beliefs) and choose to rewrite the program. As the healing process unfolds, internal stressors that weigh

The Annie Appleseed Project

37

heavily and suppress the proper functioning of the Immune System are healed. Energy previously dedicated to manage the inflamed Subconscious “wound” can now be utilized to ignite and revive the dormant Immune Response and strengthen the body’s own defense system.

Because Immersive Healing gets to the root of the deep-seated patterns of illness, it also helps prevent cancer from resurfacing in secondary medical conditions after the primary problem is successfully addressed by surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or medication.

The medical Paradigm evolved through scientific research on the anatomical and physiological composition of the body. It separated the individual from the disease, and in so doing it failed to address the root cause of the disease. For healing to take place, the person and the disease cannot and should not be separated.

The Annie Appleseed Project

39

According to the Colon Cancer Alliance and the American Cancer Society Colon Cancer also known as Colorectal Cancer, is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the US.

Colon Cancer is considered a PREVENTABLE cancer. Why? Primarily because by changing our diet we can reduce risk dramatically. And if we get regular screenings (colonoscopy), we will be diagnosed only with precancerous or early stage cancer cells that are easily removed and treated.

8 proven Steps to Fight Colorectal CancerColorectal cancer is a “food-related” cancer . (1) Everything you eat passes over the lining of your digestive tract. The lining of the large intestine and the rectum at the lower end of the digestive tube contains waste, digestive fluids, bile acids and fiber. That lining is bathed by chemicals in food, your own hormones and secretions, healthy and unhealthy bacteria. The contents of your intestines has a direct impact on the health of the tissue is touches as it passes through. Colorectal cancer is directly impacted by your diet.

Here are 8 proven steps you can take right now to promote a healthy anti-cancer intestinal environment and fight colorectal cancer (bowel cancer) naturally.

1. EAT LESS RED MEAT: Studies show that eating red meat “frequently” increases the

incidence of colon cancer. Eating red meat daily and especially more than one serving per day increased risk. Plant based diets showed lowest risk (1). Increased risk is associated with increased inflammation associated with chemicals released by digestion of red meat. These chemicals increase damage to and inhibit the repair of DNA (genetic material) in the cells lining your intestines. (2) Damage to DNA is a primary cause of all cancers.

2. EAT MORE GARLIC: According to the National Cancer Institute Fact Sheet on Garlic and Cancer Prevention,“Preliminary studies suggest that garlic consumption may reduce the risk of developing several types of cancer, especially cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. Protective effects from garlic may arise from its antibacterial properties or from its ability to block the formation of cancer-causing substances, halt the activation of cancer-causing substances, enhance repair, reduce cell proliferation, or induce cell death. Garlic is high in the minerals sulfur and selenium as well as plant chemicals such as allicilin and flavonoids, all known to be beneficial to health. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines for general health promotion for adults is a daily dose of 2 to 5 g of fresh garlic (approximately one clove)” daily. (3) (4) Additional food plants in this family with similar properties include onions, leeks, scallions, and chives.

3. EAT A RAINBOW OF PLANT ANTIOxIDANTS: The deep, bright colors of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices contribute a

40

wide variety of antioxidants to the diet. Examples of antioxidant rich, deeply pigmented foods are blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, carrots, apricots, cantaloupe, kale, broccoli, spinach, avocado, tomato, apples, red cabbage, red and purple grapes, pink grapefruit, tumeric, saffron, oregano, sage, rosemary. Color signals the presence of anti oxidant plant chemicals that turn on cancer suppressor genes and turn off cancer promoter genes. Studies show increased levels of inflammation and oxidative stress in the colon with diets lacking plant antioxidants. Increased inflammation and low antioxidant levels is an environment that promotes colon cancer.(6)(7) Eat 6-10 servings daily.

4. uSE OLIvE OIL . Olive oil contains plant chemicals that have anti-cancer properties. Olive oil reduces bile acid and increases enzymes that regulate cell turn over in the lining of the intestines promoting healthy tissue. Antioxidant compounds (phenolics) present in olive oil also exert a cancer protective antioxidant effect. (8)

5. INCLuDE SELENIuM RICH FOODS. Studies show that selenium not only inhibits colon cancer but can also enhance or work with some cancer drugs. Selenium not only protects colon cancer cells but also inhibits growth and promotes death of colon cancer cells. (9) Foods rich in selenium include garlic and onions, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, whole grains (brown rice, oats, wheat germ), brazil nuts, fish (tuna, halibut, sardines, salmon). In some areas the soil is very poor in selenium. Therefore taking a supplement of methyselenocysteine, a biologically active form of oral selenium, may provide a source absent in the diet.

6. INCLuDE SPICES AND HERBS THAT INHIBIT COLON CANCER. Studies show that Garlic, Ginger, Tumeric, Thyme, Rosemary, Sage, Spearmint, and Peppermint all inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells. (11)

7. INCLuDE OMEGA 3 OILS. A diet rich in anti-inflammatory Omega 3 oils (EPA and DHA) decreases incidence of colon cancer. Omega 3 oils are found in cold-water fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and cod as well as flax oil. Omega 3 oils decrease the levels of pro-inflammatory molecules that promote cancer. Because it is not always easy to get adequate levels of Omega 3 oils (EPA and DHA) in the modern diet, oral supplementation is a good alternative. (12)

8. DRINK GINSENG TEA. Numerous studies have shown that several species of the prized longevity herb ginseng root decrease growth and proliferation of colon cancer cells, increases their

demise (increases apoptosis) and act as potent protective anti-cancer anti-oxidant. Asian ginsengs (Panax ginseng, Panax notoginseng) as well as American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) all exhibit these properties. Ginseng root is widely available in tea and extract form as a beverage tea. Under the guidance

of a knowledgeable clinician ginseng root has been traditionally used as a medicinal herbal medicine for a wide variety of applications. (13) (14)

Closing Summary Reflecting upon these recommendations for dietary choices, we are describing both traditional Mediterranean and traditional Asian Diets. These diets are naturally low in red meats and animal proteins, high in fish and omega 3 oils, high in olive oil and a wide variety of whole grains and fruits and vegetables as well as herbs and spices with known anti-cancer properties. Cultures where traditional diets are still eaten today have lower rates of colon cancer than countries such as the United and some European countries where a modern diet seems to promote and create higher risk for colon cancer. (1) (2) (7) (8) (10) (11) (12). The choices seem clear and pretty tasty.

1950s and 1960s - an era where people did not give much thought to ingredients in cosmetics or personal care products. In fact, it was the unusual person who read labels to try to find out what chemicals were contained in any consumer product. Even for those who tried, it would have been difficult to learn what chemicals were contained in cosmetics. Most people, however, simply believed the claims that advertisers made on television or in magazines. Most people also believed that the government would keep harmful products off the market. Of course, most people in the 1950s and 1960s also believed that cigarettes were safe and that DDT was good for their gardens. But just as attitudes about smoking and pesticides were later discovered to be false, many have come to believe that there are harmful chemicals in cosmetics or other personal hygiene products. Fortunately, it is relatively easy for people today to educate themselves about the contents of the products they use every day.

It is alarming to learn how much uncertainty there is about the amount of chemicals that are absorbed through the skin and into our bodies from commonly used cosmetics and personal care products.

Dr. Samuel Epstein, Professor of Environmental and Occupational Medicine and an internationally recognized authority on carcinogenic exposures in

consumer household products and cosmetics and toiletries, believes “it is sheer madness to think continually rubbing a potentially toxic synthetic chemical, no matter how safe the chemicals supposedly are, into the skin on a regular basis will do the body no harm, let alone somehow do it good.” Skin Deep’s Consumer Update informs us that “every day the average consumer uses nine personal care products with 126 unique ingredients that nearly all of us rub, spray or pour onto hair,

skin or lips daily throughout our lives”.

Unknowing exposure to these compounds can cause inflammation which in turn may cause chronic pain or illness.

Over the years, several medical conditions that cause chronic pain, including, but not limited to neuropathies, chronic fatigue,

fibromyalgia, psoriasis, myofascial pain, some cancers and rheumatoid arthritis have been associated with chronic low levels of inflammation. Although we’re more aware of how the foods we eat can affect pain, by inflammatory processes, it may be time to examine the possibility of inflammation being inadvertently introduced into our bodies through our skin absorbing the ingredients we use in our cosmetic and personal care products.

What You Should KnowThere are no restrictions or requirements for safety testing in the personal care products. Shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, liquid soap, hair spray and

makeup are just a few of the many products we use on a continuous basis. Skin Deep’s cosmetic data base web site states that the FDA [Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act] contains no provision that requires demonstration to the FDA of the safety of ingredients of cosmetic products because the agency can’t require premarket safety testing of personal care products, it cannot prevent the introduction of potentially dangerous products on the market.

Skin Deep’s web site also shows that industrial chemicals are the basic ingredients of personal care products which contain carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, plasticizers, degreasers and surfactants.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA] gives warnings that chronic exposure to high levels of Diethyl Phthalate [DEP] can cause vestibular dysfunction and polyneuritis, including pain, spasms, numbness and weakness in the arms and legs, dizziness and nausea. OSHA reports that acute exposure to DEHP [another type of phthalate] and phthalates of similar structure causes irritation to the eyes, skin, mucosa and respiratory tract in addition to dizziness and nausea. The phthalate family of chemicals is used in a variety of products from cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, soaps, lotions, lubricants and personal care products.

One of Skin Deep’s articles informs us that scientists have found many common cosmetic ingredients in human tissues, including plasticizers (phthalates) in urine, persistent fragrance components like musk zylene in human fat, as well as feminization of human male babies in the U.S. are linked to a common fragrance component called diethyl phthalate. It is important to note that neither phthalates nor musks appear on the labels of products, and can be hidden by the word “fragrance” on the list of ingredients. Since it is unclear as to what chemicals we’re exposing

ourselves to when using a product containing fragrance, it may be wise to avoid products that list “fragrance” as an ingredient.

Another potentially harmful chemical to look up is Propylene Glycol. This chemical is a major ingredient in brake fluid and used in cleansers to dissolve grease? Factory workers have been warned to wear protective clothing to avoid skin contact. There are numerous sites web sites stating that with prolonged contact this ingredient can cause liver and kidney damage. It is also used to thicken products, as a preservative in dog food, as well as in our own food. You can find Propylene Glycol in multiple personal care products including deodorants, suntan lotions and baby wipes to just

name a few. By law labels on bottles are listed in a descending order beginning with the highest amount of an ingredient listed first. Inhalation of this substance can cause central nervous system depression and ingestion can lead to brain damage and pulmonary edema.

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause headaches and chronic fatigue. This ingredient is frequently found in nail polish and other nail products.

Surprisingly, the word Fragrance on a specific label can indicate the presence of up to four thousand separate ingredients, many which may be carcinogenic or toxic. Fragrances can be found in thousands of products. Symptoms of dizziness, headaches, skin discoloration, violent coughing and vomiting, and skin irritation have been reported to the FDA. Clinical observation proves fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing hyperactivity, irritability and depression.

Lanolin obtained from sheep wool can also be contaminated with pesticides.

By now, most of us have read about the unhealthy

side effects of Parabens [methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl] being used in cosmetic and personal care products. We know that the body is absorbing Parabens since there have been numerous articles discussing the cosmetic preservative Paraben has been found in samples of breast tumor tissue. Parabens are highly toxic and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Fortunately there have been so many advertisements stating the negative effects of Parabens, that many companies are marketing their products as “Paraben free”, although these companies are still in the minority. One needs to be extremely careful since even “organic, natural or vegan products” can contain Parabens, and other harmful chemicals.

A Word About Organic...One of the most misunderstood advertisements with products is the use of the word organic. There are numerous products sold in health food stores that claim to be organic. Just because ingredients are organic, they may not be free of health concerns and may still contain many harmful chemical ingredients. In fact, the USDA regulates organic personal care products only if they are made up of agricultural ingredients.

A program called The National Organic Program (NOP) develops, implements, and administers the national production, handling, and labeling standards for organic agricultural products and also accredits the certifying agents (domestic and foreign) who inspect organic production and handling operations to certify that they meet USDA standards. Therefore if you choose to purchase an organic product, the safest way to approach this dilemma at the present time is to only buy USDA certified products. All ingredients whether organic, synthetic or natural should be tested for safety.

REIKI (pronounced “ray-kee”) is a therapeutic technique in which healing energy is channeled, or conducted, through a practitioner’s hands into the person receiving the treatment. It is believed that Reiki brings the body into emotional and spiritual balance, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

YOGA is used for fatigue, insomnia, depression, general quality of life. It can reduce high blood pressure.

ExERCISE has been studied to reduce fatigue DURING treatment with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Walking, biking, swimming, etc.

AROMATHERAPY used for nausea (being taught at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX). It can stimulate lymphatic flow, reduce fatigue and anxiety. Example: Lavender for headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, Orange for insomnia, constipation, depression, anxiety, peppermint as a digestive aid, ROSEMARY for fatigue, YLANG-YLANG for calming.

ACuPuNCTuRE can help in reducing nausea, fatigue, keeping blood counts normalized, much more. Local practitioners may be willing to give time pro bono. [http://annieappleseedproject.org/tradchinmed.html.]

prOTECTION FOr rADIOTHErApY1) In vitro studies showed that curcumin increases tumor cell apoptosis, decreases cell growth rate, and reduces the number of clonogenic cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Hiroshi Inano at the Research Center for Radiation Safety, National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Japan, says the results are very interesting and that he hopes to be able to use curcumin in clinical application, particularly given its low toxicity and strong antioxidant activity. [12/10/2002; Lancet Oncology].

2 ) Conclusion: Calendula is highly effective for the prevention of acute dermatitis of grade 2 or higher and should be proposed for patients undergoing postoperative irradiation for breast cancer. [Journal of Clinical Oncology, Vol 22, No 8 (April 15), 2004: pp. 1447-1453.]

3) Treatment of mice with abana before irradia-tion caused a significant depletion in lipid peroxi-dation followed by a significant elevation in GSH concentration in the liver of mice at day 31 post-ir-radiation. Abana scavenged •OH, DPPH, ABTS•+ and NO• in a concentration dependent manner in vitro. Our results indicate that the radioprotective activity of abana, a polyherbal drug may be due to free radical scavenging and increased GSH level in irradiated mice. [British Journal of Radiology (2004) 77, 1027-1035.]

4) Tea extracts are an efficient, broadly available treatment option for patients suffering from acute radiation-induced skin toxicity. “The molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects are complex, and most likely not exclusively dependent on effects of tea polyphenols such

INSOmNIA1) POPPY SEEDS: Include poppy seeds in your diet: they are a natural sleep aid. Ayervedic.

2) PuMPKIN SEEDS: are “more likely to attract the sand man than warm milk, a book or Lavender scents on the pillow”. Like Turkey, Butternut Squash Seeds and pumpkin seeds have high concentrations of the compounds that tend to make guests sluggish after a Thanksgiving meal.

3) HERBS: such as Valerian, with Calcium/Magnesium, skullcap.

4) MASSAGE: the soles of your feet (Dana Ullman, Homeopath suggests); hypnotize yourself starting with your feet – feel total relaxation, then move on up. Take a warm bath in which you add a couple of drops of one or more essential oils such as orangeblossom, meadowsweet, or hops.

5) WOOL BLANKETS: are better able to regulate skin and body temperature than synthetic blankets. This comfortable comforter may help you sleep better. Many medicines keep you awake. Talk to your doctor.

6) RAW, ORGANIC HONEY - 1 teaspoon before bed may help you sleep better.

7) uSE A MANTRA: A mantra is usually a one or two syllable word that you repeat over and over and over again. You use it as a way to calm the mind, though it can also clear the mind and encourage sleep.

8) LISTEN TO MuSIC: Music to relax by.

9) CHECK YOuR MEDICINES: Many medications keep you awake. Talk to your doctor.

NEUrOpATHY1) “Our results indicate that the behavioral symptoms of neuropathic pain states can be treatedsuccessfully, and that partial to complete reversal of associated morphological and neurochemical changes is achievable with artemin”. 2) Alpha-lipoic acid (a dietary supplement) Considered safe Regul Toxicol Pharmacol. [2006 Oct; 46(1):29-41. Epub 2006 Aug 14.] Also protective for the liver “The results of the study revealed that -lipoic acid could offer protection against chloroquine-induced hepatotoxicity. -Lipoic acid had a better protective effect when compared with silymarin, a reference drug” [Journal of Applied Toxicology Volume 24, Issue 1 , Pages 21 - 26.]

3) vitamin B12 (from an article by syndicated columnist Dr. Paul Donohue, To Your Health, in the Palm Beach Post).]“The recommended daily allowance for vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms. Huge doses of vitamin B12 can penetrate the intestinal wall. (But) B12 deficiency is an uncommon cause of burning feet.”

4) “Conclusions: urea containing preparation appears to be an excellent choice for the preventionand treatment of capecitabine induced hand foot syndrome. This minimizes drug delays, schedule interruptions and maintains the dose density. Owing to reduced morbidity, the drug tolerance and acceptance is considerably improved”.
