It almost goes without saying that the past year has beendifficult financially not just within the arts but for allbusinesses. At Sadler’s Wells we feel we have doneextremely well to ride this wave, with healthy ticket salesand an increased number of shows. But we are only tooaware that the immediate future is very uncertain in theface of the continuing problems in financial markets, whichmake it more than usually hard to predict consumerspending.

The fortunes of Sadler’s Wells took a huge step forwardwhen Alistair Spalding took to the helm in 2004 and it isthe hard work of Alistair and all his team that has enabledSadler’s Wells to flourish even in the current financialclimate.

The decision to dedicate Sadler’s Wells to becoming theUK’s premier dance house has resulted in countlessawards for its own productions, a dramatic increase inticket sales and this year we have presented more Sadler’sWells productions at venues around the world than at anyother time.

It speaks volumes that the five artists who joined asassociates in 2004 have stayed with us over the pastseven years and that our stable of dance talent nowincludes 14 artists and three resident companies. Sadler’sWells’ support of these individuals has enabled thecreation of some truly extraordinary dance works – piecesborn from inquisitive minds that place no borders on whatdance can be. This seems to me absolutely what Sadler’sWells is all about.

I am very proud of these achievements and we areabsolutely determined to build on these successes in theyears ahead.

Page 4: Sadler's Wells Annual Report 2010/2011

2010/11 was a very ambitious year, in which Sadler’s Wells pursued a bold and brave artistic vision to create two major new productions and take excitingwork off-site to attract new audiences in different settings. As David Bell points out in his introduction, theseachievements have occurred in difficult financialcircumstances, and unfortunately this level of investmentcannot be maintained in the immediate future as theeconomic climate puts pressure on audiences, artscouncil funding, donors and the price of essential suppliessuch as energy.

However, whatever restraints the global economy mayimpose on businesses, I believe we can take inspirationfrom the arts which continue to produce innovative, exciting new works – proving money has no real bearingon imagination.

For me one of the joys of my job is that moment when allthe months of talks, planning and rehearsals find their wayto the stage on opening night. This year has delivered somany of those adrenaline-soaked moments it is hard forme to pick out one highlight – from the dramatic openingbars of the Pet Shop Boy’s first-ever ballet score to thebeautiful image of Bartabas gliding through the darknessof the Sadler’s Wells stage on a black horse – it has beenan unforgettable 12 months.

As we look ahead we, like many other arts venues, areprepared for a potentially difficult time, yet we remaincommitted to delivering the best UK and internationaldance to our audiences. We’re extremely proud of theachievements of this past year and look forward to seeingthe conditions that allowed these to flourish return.

ABOUT OUR WORK

Sadler’s Wells’ role within not just the dance sector but London’s cultural fabric as a whole hasexpanded significantly in the past decade. This growth is in part a product of the hard work andexpert programming that has gone into shaping the theatre’s incarnation as London’s premierdance house, but it also reflects a wider change in public opinion on dance.

In cinemas, on television and in performance spaces around the country, dance’s profile has risenimmeasurably in a relatively short period of time. Its ability to cross social, linguistic and culturalbarriers surpasses most other performing arts, making it a vital medium for the 21st century. Forthis to continue we need to ensure that the dance makers of today are supported and encouragedto keep producing boundary-breaking work.

Jerwood Studio at Sadler’s Wells

Launched in 2006, Jerwood Studio at Sadler’s Wellsoffers a chance for artists to explore ideas without thepressure of scheduled performance dates. It would be fair tosay that 2010 has been the most productive to date of theprogramme, as projects from two or three years ago cameto fruition along with more recent ones to have a majorimpact on the calibre and quality of Sadler’s Wells artisticprogramme. Cross Art Form projects in 2010/11 include:

• The creative team of The Most Incredible Thing, whohad a week of discussions surrounding the project thathas since been presented in a sell out run.

• Choreographer Fin Walker and director TheaSharrock, who explored Macbeth from a movementperspective, to be produced next year.

• Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Jasmin Vardimon andvisual artist Shezad Dawood experimented with mixingfilm and live performance referencing the physical skilland humour of Buster Keaton, material from which waspresented in her latest work and Sadler’s Wells co-commission 7734.

• The Clod Ensemble used Jerwood time to develop ideasin the Sadler’s Wells main house. This work has beencommissioned and will be presented in autumn 2011.

Sadler’s Wells Off SiteSadler’s Wells champions public engagement by takingdance outside of our walls to unusual venues and publicspaces including streets, shops, housing estates andparks, with performances at sites including VillageUnderground in Shoreditch, Trafalgar Square, a goodsyard in Kings Cross and the neighbouring streets ofSadler’s Wells.

Off site performances in 10/11 included:

Slow DancingWe brought artist David Michalek’s large-scale installationof slow moving images of dancers in motion to London forthe first time. The piece had previously been presented inVenice, Toronto, Monaco and cities across the USA, so itwas a delight to introduce it to UK audiences as part of theT Mobile Big Dance.

Electric HotelSadler’s Wells collaborated with Fuel theatre for thisdance-theatre hybrid which was presented in a speciallydesigned ‘hotel’ in Kings Cross. Audiences were givenheadphones which enabled them to observe a story of thehotel’s inhabitants from outside the building. Theproduction was nominated for a BT Visit London award forConsumer Event of the Year. Bloomberg generouslysponsored Electric Hotel in London.

Producing & TouringDepartmentWe have created a new department to focus on ourexpanded producing and touring work and SuzanneWalker leads this team as Executive Producer. Thiscreated a vacancy for a Director of ProgrammeManagement, to manage presentations across all Sadler’s Wells’ venues, which was filled by Katy Arnander.

Creative LearningFiona Ross and Jane Hackett became Co-Directors ofCreative Learning increasing the level of senior resourcingfor the department. Britannia Morton joined us in June2010 as Director of Visitor Services and Estates and latermade a smooth transition to cover the maternity leave ofthe General Manager Laura Stevenson.

2010/11 was the first full year in which Sadler’s Wellsoperated the catering at its theatres in house. As well asgiving us greater control over the delivery of food and drinkto our patrons, it contributes in a significant financial wayto our operation. Together with our existing eventsoperation trading income now represents 10% of annualturnover, with an overall contribution of around £0.4million.

Sustainability In the five years to the end of March 2011 we havereduced gas consumption by 69% and electricityconsumption by 18%. This has resulted in overall CO2savings over the 5 years of 27.5%. We are pleased withthese results and will be continuing our push towardsbeing more environmentally sustainable in 11/12 withinitiatives around waste recycling and use of boreholewater for domestic cold water systems. In 2010 we werenominated for a Giant Green Business Award for EnergyUse & CO2 Reduction (Medium/Large Business).

Archive Sadler’s Wells has an extraordinary history that stretchesback over three centuries. Nearby Finsbury Library holdsSadler’s Wells’ archives and in November 2010 the librarywas awarded a cataloguing grant from The NationalArchives in order to appoint a project archivist for theorganising and cataloguing of the Sadler’s Wells TheatreCollection. We are extremely happy that the archive willreceive the care and attention it requires to ensurethe theatre’s fascinating history can beenjoyed by generations tocome.

The financial environment remains challenging, but at theoperating level Sadler’s Wells broke even in 2010/11.

The majority of Sadler’s Wells’ income continues to be selfgenerated; some 86% earned from own activities, theremaining 14% being support from Arts Council England.Theatre presentations continue to represent by far thelargest income stream at 67% of total income.

A total overall excess of expenditure over income was aresult of expenditure made against Restricted andDesignated funds for artistic projects. These representfunds donated and reserved in recent years for thispurpose. Expenditure was also made against the generalreserve, primarily to support continuing artistic activityacross year ends.
