SADC SELECTED ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL INDICATORS, 2016 1. INTRODUCTION This report is an attempt to provide data series and a brief trend analysis of the major socio-economic characteristics of SADC region for the Year 2016 based on Selected Economic and Social Indicators for the period 2007 to 2016. Data was primarily submitted and updated by National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of SADC Member States and endorsed during the annual statutory meeting of SADC Statistics Committee held from 12-14 July 2017 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The core list of selected indicators for the region is presented in the attached tables 1 to 27 and corresponds to data submission as at end of July 2017. The following sections present an analysis of trends of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Trade and Demographic indicators. 2. GDP AND MANUFACTURING SADC region registered an estimated average growth rate of 1.4% in 2016 compared to 2.3% in 2015 as illustrated in Figure 1. The Manufacturing sector, identified as the prioritized key engine of growth to drive the industrialization process in SADC for the coming decades, grew by 2.6% in 2016 compared to 1.5% in 2015. The region`s growth has been increasing at a decreasing rate since post global crisis in 2009 while the manufacturing sector exhibited decent growth in 2016. At country-specific level (Table 3), Tanzania registered highest overall economic growth rate at 7.0% among the Member States followed by Botswana at 4.3 % in 2016. The rest of the Member States registered growth rates ranging between 0% and 3.8% except for Swaziland which recorded a decline of 0.6% during the same period. With regard to the Manufacturing sector, significant growth rates were recorded by Angola (6.9%), DRC (8.6%) and Tanzania (7.8%) among the Member States in 2016. Only Seychelles registered a decline in the manufacturing sector of 1.3% during the same year. The share of manufacturing sector to overall GDP in 2016 stood at 11.1%. Indeed, the share of the Manufacturing sector to overall GDP in SADC region has steadily been declining since 2007 from 13.6% to reach its lowest point to 10.6% in 2013. The Post 2013 period has shown a resilience of the sector for gradual increase in its share to the GDP increasing to about 11.1% in 2016. Figure 3 shows trend of nominal GDP per capita of SADC region for the period 2007-2016. GDP per capita stood at $1834 in 2016 representing a significant nominal decrease of 7.2% compared to $1976 in 2015. Since 2007, this variable, as an income measure of poverty, increased from $1847 to reach its highest level of $2440 in 2011. Beyond 2011, it has gradually decreased due to sharp depreciation of national currencies of most SADC Member States against international convertible currencies. At country level, Table 4 below shows Seychelles has the highest GDP per capita (US$ 15 144) estimate whilst Malawi has the lowest at US$ 317 in 2016.

1. INTRODUCTION

This report is an attempt to provide data series and a brief

trend analysis of the major socio-economic characteristics

of SADC region for the Year 2016 based on Selected

Economic and Social Indicators for the period 2007 to

2016. Data was primarily submitted and updated by

National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of SADC Member

States and endorsed during the annual statutory meeting

of SADC Statistics Committee held from 12-14 July 2017

in Johannesburg, South Africa. The core list of selected

indicators for the region is presented in the attached tables

1 to 27 and corresponds to data submission as at end of

July 2017. The following sections present an analysis of

trends of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Trade and

Demographic indicators.

2. GDP AND MANUFACTURING

SADC region registered an estimated average growth rate

of 1.4% in 2016 compared to 2.3% in 2015 as illustrated

in Figure 1. The Manufacturing sector, identified as the

prioritized key engine of growth to drive the

industrialization process in SADC for the coming

decades, grew by 2.6% in 2016 compared to 1.5% in

2015. The region`s growth has been increasing at a

decreasing rate since post global crisis in 2009 while the

manufacturing sector exhibited decent growth in 2016.

At country-specific level (Table 3), Tanzania registered

highest overall economic growth rate at 7.0% among the

Member States followed by Botswana at 4.3 % in 2016.

The rest of the Member States registered growth rates

ranging between 0% and 3.8% except for Swaziland

which recorded a decline of 0.6% during the same period.

With regard to the Manufacturing sector, significant

growth rates were recorded by Angola (6.9%), DRC

(8.6%) and Tanzania (7.8%) among the Member States in

2016. Only Seychelles registered a decline in the

manufacturing sector of 1.3% during the same year.

The share of manufacturing sector to overall GDP in 2016

stood at 11.1%. Indeed, the share of the Manufacturing

sector to overall GDP in SADC region has steadily been

declining since 2007 from 13.6% to reach its lowest point to

10.6% in 2013. The Post 2013 period has shown a resilience

of the sector for gradual increase in its share to the GDP

increasing to about 11.1% in 2016.

Figure 3 shows trend of nominal GDP per capita of SADC

region for the period 2007-2016. GDP per capita stood at

$1834 in 2016 representing a significant nominal decrease

of 7.2% compared to $1976 in 2015. Since 2007, this

variable, as an income measure of poverty, increased from

$1847 to reach its highest level of $2440 in 2011. Beyond

2011, it has gradually decreased due to sharp depreciation

of national currencies of most SADC Member States

against international convertible currencies. At country

level, Table 4 below shows Seychelles has the highest

GDP per capita (US$ 15 144) estimate whilst Malawi has

the lowest at US$ 317 in 2016.

3. TRADE

Promotion of trade liberalization is a critical factor

towards attainment of set goals for regional economic

integration within the SADC region. In 2016, SADC

Exports of Goods (Extra-SADC) stood at about $ 114

billion whilst Imports stood at $ 123 billion resulting in a

trade deficit of $ 9 billion. Figure 4 illustrates trend in

SADC Trade Balance for the period 2007-2016.

SADC region registered positive trade balance during

2007-2013 exception in 2009 when the region recorded a

deficit mainly on account of the effects of the global

financial crisis during that year. Post 2013, the region`s

trade with rest of the world went into deficit to reach its

lowest level of $ 20 billion in 2015. The deficit improved

to $ 9 billion in 2016 mainly due to reduced imports from

rest of the world by the majority of SADC Member States

(Table 17). The largest exporter and importer of goods for

the region remains South Africa followed by Angola and

DRC (Table 17-18).

Merchandise trade among SADC Member States has

steadily been on the increase since 2007 as depicted in Fig

5 above. Intra-SADC Exports as a percentage of Total

Exports of Goods increased from 15.2% in 2007 to reach

24.9% in 2016 whilst that of Imports increased from

18.2% to 21.2% during the same period.

4. DEMOGRAPHY

The estimated population of the SADC region increased

from 318.9 million in 2015 to 327.2 million in 2016

representing a 2.6% annual population growth rate. The

largest population share in the region in 2016 was in DRC

(26.6%) followed by South Africa (17.1%) and Tanzania

(15.3%). Figure 6 shows the share of population across

SADC Member States for 2016.

Life Expectancy at birth, as a measurement for quantity of

life, is an indicator with high correlation to the health status

of a population which invariably has bearings for

contributing to the processes of growth and productivity in

a country.

SADC region has been registering steady increase in life

expectancy over the past decade that could be attributed

to improved nutrition, sanitation and medical

interventions, among others. Available data indicate that

the average life expectancy of the region has increased

from 51.8 years in 2007 to reach 60.1 years in 2016. See

Figure 7 for details.
