SACRED HEART WADSWORTH, OH During this month of the Poor Souls, we are reminded to pray for those who have gone before us in faith. Whenever we lose someone we love, we always wonder what happens to them. I oſten wonder what they might be experiencing at the moment when people have gathered for the funeral Mass. I think it is a moment when the one who has died is experiencing the fullness of God’s love, even though they may not yet be united to Him totally in the kingdom of heaven. The funeral Mass is the first Mass to be offered for that person who has died and it is very important, yet so oſten it is omied because the family does not want to be bothered. They would much rather have something shorter, and in some cases nothing at all, say a few prayers at the grave. If only they knew what they were depriving their loved one of. In other cases, it is the one who has died who leaves instrucons that they want no wake and no funeral Mass because they do not want their loved ones to go through the grieving, as if shortening the process or eliminang it all together will diminish their grief. They will sll grieve, and without the funeral rites, their grief will be longer and not shorter. I would dare to say that when someone dies and leaves instrucons that there should be no wake or funeral Mass, they will undoubtedly regret their instrucons, as in death they will realize how much they need and desire the prayers of the Church. If a loved one of mine should ever make such a request, I would acknowledge their request when they make it, but for their own good I would have to disregard it when they die and make sure that they receive all the prayers the Church has to offer. This is how important our prayers for the dead are even if we do not realize it in the present. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us: 1030 All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but sll imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvaon; but aſter death they undergo purificaon, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. 1031 Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purificaon of the elect, which is enrely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory, especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradion of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire: (954, 1472). 1032 This teaching is also based on the pracce of prayer for the dead, already menoned in Sacred Scripture: “Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.”609 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharisc sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may aain the beafic vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: (958, 1371, 1479). Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolaon? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them. This month of the Poor Souls is a wonderful me for us to reflect on the mystery of death in our Catholic Faith; our own, and that of our brothers and sisters. Let us do so in the light of the teachings of the Scriptures and the Church, and not let ourselves be taken in by the popular thought of death and our society’s obvious fear of it. Today is the 100 th Anniversary of the Armisce that ended the First World War, November 11, 1918. At the me it was called “the war to end all wars” - if only that were true. Sadly, wars connue to plague this world of ours and many people connue to die. Today, November 11 is now called Veterans Day and we honor and pray for all who have served our country in the armed forces during wars and during peace me. We are always grateful for all the men and women who selflessly give of themselves for the sake of our freedom and safety. May God bless all who serve our country in this way and may those who have gone before us rest in the peace of Christ. Our seventh annual Men’s Conference was aended by over 70 men on Saturday, November 3. It was a very nice cross secon of ages from a variety of parishes that came together to listen to Mahew Leonard’s inspiring talks on how we can beer live and share our Catholic Faith. I am very grateful to those who worked to organize the conference, especially Mark Smith and Alan Beery. Thanks also to the women who provided a really good breakfast to start the day; to Vince Greczanik for providing beauful music; and to the Knights of Columbus for their generous donaon to help fund the conference. I hope the guys that came to the conference found it helpful for their spiritual growth. May God bless all our efforts as we try to share our Catholic Faith with others.

SACRED HEART WADSWORTH, OH

During this month of the Poor Souls, we are reminded to pray for those who have gone before us in faith. Whenever we lose someone we love, we always wonder what happens to them. I often wonder what they might be experiencing at the moment when people have gathered for the funeral Mass. I think it is a moment when the one who has died is experiencing the fullness of God’s love, even though they may not yet be united to Him totally in the kingdom of heaven.

The funeral Mass is the first Mass to be offered for that person who has died and it is very important, yet so often it is omitted because the family does not want to be bothered. They would much rather have something shorter, and in some cases nothing at all, say a few prayers at the grave. If only they knew what they were depriving their loved one of. In other cases, it is the one who has died who leaves instructions that they want no wake and no funeral Mass because they do not want their loved ones to go through the grieving, as if shortening the process or eliminating it all together will diminish their grief. They will still grieve, and without the funeral rites, their grief will be longer and not shorter. I would dare to say that when someone dies and leaves instructions that there should be no wake or funeral Mass, they will undoubtedly regret their instructions, as in death they will realize how much they need and desire the prayers of the Church. If a loved one of mine should ever make such a request, I would acknowledge their request when they make it, but for their own good I would have to disregard it when they die and make sure that they receive all the prayers the Church has to offer. PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS the family and friends of Deacon Edward J. McCarthy, Pam Barnes, sister of Joe Giacomoni and Dorothy Warner, mother of Barb Warner who died recently. May our Lord grant them eternal rest in His heavenly kingdom.

Patricians meeting Tuesday, November 13th, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Parish Library. The Patricians Group is a discussion group for the purpose of deepening knowledge of the Faith. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the

Parish Library in the Parish Center. A layperson introduces the topic. This is followed by discussion. Then comes an interval for refreshments, after which the priest gives a talk. This is followed by further discussion until the meeting ends with the recitation of the Creed. Don’t miss deliberation with your parish family each month on various, important religious topics which will grow your own flame within. The Holy Spirit gives us all insights into Christ’s truth. These we share with others and learn in turn from them. Topic for November’s meeting is a consideration of The UNITY Jesus prayed for and

ECUMENISM.

Adoration Hours The Night Watch in the chapel is empty Tuesdays 2-3 am. “There are particular graces reserved for souls who keep

watch before my Eucharistic Face during the night.”

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time In the course of his teaching he said: “Be on guard against the scribes, who like to parade around in their robes and accept marks of respect in public, front seats in the synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. These men devour the savings of widows and recite long prayers for appearance’ sake; it is they who will receive the severest sentence.” Taking a seat opposite the treasury, he observed the crowd putting money into the collection box. Many of the wealthy put in sizable amounts; but one poor widow came and put in two copper coins worth a few cents. He called his disciples over and told them: “I want you to observe that this poor widow contributed more than all the others who donated to the treasury. They gave from their surplus wealth, but she gave from her want, all that she had to live on.” Mk 12:38-44
