Prayer for Vocations

Compassionate Heart of Jesus, graciously listen to our prayers. Give us generous

hearts to respond to your call in our lives. Lift up courageous men and women willing to follow after your heart as priests, sisters,

brothers, and deacons. Help parents and teachers to share the faith and to encourage

young people to explore religious voca-tions. Guide all people, Lord, in your ways

of compassion, truth, and peace, that we may find happiness in fulfilling our voca-

tion. Amen.

Saints of the Week July 3—Saint Thomas the

Apostle

Thomas first speaks in the Gospel of John. In John 11:16, when Lazarus had re-cently died, the apostles do not wish to go back to Judea, where some Jews had at-tempted to stone Jesus. Tho-mas says: Let us also go, that we may die with him.

He speaks again in John 14:5. There, Jesus had just explained that he was going away to prepare a heavenly home for his followers, and that one day they would join him there. Thomas reacted by saying, Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?

John 20:24-29 tells how doubting Thomas was skeptical at first when he heard that Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to the other apostles, saying, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. (v. 25) But when Jesus ap-peared later and invited Thomas to touch his wounds and behold him, Thomas showed his belief by saying, My Lord and my God. (v. 28) Jesus then said, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed:

July 6— Saint Maria Goretti St. Maria Goretti (October 16, 1890 – July 6, 1902) is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Catholic Church, and one of the youngest canonized saints. She was born to a farming family. Her father died when she was nine, and they had to share a house with another family, the Serenellis. Maria took over household duties while her mother, brothers, and

sister worked in the fields.

One afternoon, Alessandro, the Serenellis' son, made

sexual advances to her. When she refused to submit to

him, he stabbed her fourteen times. She was taken to the

hospital but she died forgiving him. He was arrested, con-

victed, and jailed. During imprisonment he repented. After

27 years he was released from prison, and visited her

mother to beg forgiveness, which she granted. He later

became a lay brother in a monastery, dying peacefully in

1970. She was beatified in 1947, and canonized in 1950.

Pivotal Players Series at Sacred Heart

On Wednesday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. a new series begins on Michelangelo, painter, sculptor, philoso-

pher, renaissance man, who painted the famous Sistine Chapel.

NEEDS OF THE PARISH

We are in urgent need of volunteers in the following areas:

Men who are not afraid of heights who would be willing to change lights in the church as

needed. Also, volunteers to help with grass cutting and snow blowing in the winter.

Adults—men and women—who would be willing to train as adult altar servers for funeral

Masses.

Children who have received First Holy Communion who would like to train as altar servers at

weekend Masses.

Hospitality Committee: people who would be interested in volunteering to set up, make cof-

fee, clean up church hall on Sundays for coffee and donuts after the 10:00a.m. Mass. Would

also be available to help at parish events with set up and clean-up.

We also need more Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist.

If you are interested in any of these, please see Fr. Guy after Mass or contact the rectory at

Perpetual Candles at Sacred Heart

As May is the month of Our Lady, we are reminded that our greatest intercessor is Our Lady.

We are blessed to have three sacred spaces with candles at which we can light a candle for our

prayers and special intentions.

These candles can be used for weekly visits, as many of you already do. There is also the pos-

sibility to reserve a candle for a month(s) or a year. Some of the intentions for which a num-

ber of parishioners have reserved candles:

Deceased or living family

Condolence for friends or family

Anniversary of Marriage

Birthday

Automatically with the condolences, we send a letter to notify the grieving family of the candle

lit in our church for their loved one. We can also send a letter when requested for the others.

Visit one of our candle devotional spaces to light a candle. Fill out the form below to re-

serve a candle for a month or year.

Prayer to Saint Michael:

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be

our defense against the wickedness and snares of the

devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do

thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of

God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits

who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Preghiera a San Michele:

San Michele Arcangelo, difendici nella battaglia; sii tu nostro sostegno contro la perfidia e le insidie del diavolo; che Dio eserciti il suo dominio su di lui, te ne preghiamo supplichevoli; e tu, o Principe della milizia celeste, con la potenza divina, ricaccia nell'inferno satana e gli altri spiriti maligni i quali errano nel mondo per perdere le anime. AMEN.

Values that Last a Lifetime!

Freedom and Independence

As we approach our country’s celebration of its independence, we have a great deal to reflect on and a great deal for which

we should be grateful. The Fathers of our country were led by an indomitable spirit of truth, justice, and liberty. These are qualities

which we all hold sacred and dear to us; for these are qualities which comprise our basic freedoms and form us into the people we

are as a nation.

As Catholic Christians, we also are led by the Spirit of Truth, Justice, and Liberty. The Spirit we follow is the Spirit of the

Lord. This Spirit allows us to worship the One, True, Living God in freedom. As Americans, we believe that these freedoms which

our forefathers fought for and the freedoms which the Lord God has given us go hand in hand. We must cherish these always.

As July 4th approaches and summer vacations begin, let us remember the importance of the freedoms which we enjoy.

Wherever our summer travels may take us, we must remember that God comes first. If it were not for the courage and bravery of

our forefathers we would not enjoy the independence which we have. We must take the time to give thanks for the great country in

which we live. Also, if it were not for the courage and bravery of our Church Fathers in faith, the many martyrs, and holy men and

women who have gone before us, we would not have the richness of our Catholic faith. So let us celebrate and rejoice in the many

freedoms and liberties we enjoy, both civil and religious, in this, our great country.

Happy and safe Independence day and Summer,

God bless you all,

Fr. Guy
