State and Diocesan Guidelines for Places of Worship

Under the directives given us by the Governor, we have resumed the celebration of Mass on Saturday’s at 4 PM, and on Sunday’s at 8:30 AM and 11 AM. Weekday Masses have resumed as well. We will resume the 7:15 AM Mass on Sunday if/as the attendance picks up.

The regulations from the Commonwealth state that we are limited to 40% capacity which is 300 people. Realize that it doesn’t take into consideration the 6’ distancing with other non-family members as well as only having 5 available pews in each of the 8 sections of the church. Given all of these considerations, it will seem as though a more realistic number will be approximately 100 per Mass

Page 4: SACRED HEART PARISH - John Patrick Publishing Co · 2020-06-18 · SACRED HEART PARISH SUNDAY 12 FEEDING HILLS Saturday, June 20 (Mass 4:00 PM Rose Baevich (RIP) req. by Kathy & Don

SACRED HEART PARISH SUNDAY 14 FEEDING HILLS

There are some changes to our worship for the foreseeable future. These restrictions come from the Diocese:

The omission of the Sign of Peace No Communion by the Chalice Communion in the hand only Holy Water fonts to remain empty Social distancing (6ft minimum) to be

abided by at all times. No singing by the Congregation

All members of the congregation need to wear masks otherwise they will be denied entrance into the church, with a few exceptions:

Children under the age of two should not wear masks.

Parents should judge for children between the ages of two and five whether they should wear a mask.

The parish reserves the right to refuse admission to any who do not wear masks.

The priest and others with him in the sanctuary do not need to wear masks in the sanctuary as long as strict socially distancing is maintained. They do have to wear masks when assisting with the distribution of Holy Communion.

Please bring your own hand sanitizer if at all possible.

You are all asked to use the front entrance of the church in order to provide the patterns of traffic that are recommended by the state.

Depending on the attendance at any one Mass, the distribution of Holy Communion may be done at the end of Mass. After the final blessing, the Extraordinary Ministers of Communion will be given out Communion in the Sanctuary and then proceed to their stations at the exits of the church. Please follow the

arrows. Those right of the center aisle are asked to exit your rows to the right side, section by section. Those left of the center aisle are asked to exit your rows to the left side, section by section. This will make an easier flow of the crowd.

There will be a continuing need for volunteers to assist in preparing the church for the next Mass. The pews that were used need to be sprayed down with Pine-Sol and wiped dry. The door handles throughout the church will have to be sanitized with a bleach and water solution along with the rest room in the front vestibule. The Sacristy is closed so please do not enter.

As hospitals have now begun to lift visitor restrictions, parishes can begin to allow home visitations. Such visits should follow all guidelines and are limited in the time spent at home. Please contact our Pastoral Minister, Deb Briancesco, if you would like Holy Communion brought to your home. Any Extraordinary Ministers of Communion must see Deb regarding the guidelines before any home visitation can take place.

Baystate Medical Center Blood Drive Program

Baystate Medical Center is holding a Blood Drive Program. Their blood supply is critically low due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. They’ve been unable to take the bloodmobile out as they are unable to remain 6 ft. apart and their fixed site had to move because of a no visitor’s policy in the hospital. Because there are no patients in the Whitney Ave location, it is their hope that this will encourage the community to come out and donate.

The Blood Drive will be held at 361 Whitney Avenue in Holyoke on the following days and times:

Sunday: 8 AM – 12 PM Monday: 8 AM – 4 PM Tuesday: 12 PM – 8 PM Wednesday: 12 PM – 8 PM Thursday: 12 PM – 8 PM Friday: 8 PM – 4 PM Saturday: Closed

If you are healthy and able, they would love for you to come on out! All eligible donors will receive a Six Flags New England ticket and gift card to Big Y or Dunkin’

Please call and make an appointment, but walk-ins are certainly welcome! Here are the safety measures that have been taking place during the pandemic:

the location has the donor chairs spread 6 ft. or more apart

equipment and chairs are cleaned between each donor

our staff wear masks at all times; we can provide them to donors if they do not have their own

everyone has their temperature taken before filling out the questionnaire. Sacred Heart Parish has been hosting

Blood Drives since July of 2016. Since the Covid-19 Pandemic hit Massachusetts in Mid-March, all blood drives were cancelled. Baystate Medical Center has been struggling for donations and we are now in a real shortage. We will resume hosting the blood drives as soon as safely possible. In the meantime, please consider donating at their new donation site.

Flags by Fr. Paul Turner

Many churches display the papal and national flags. This optional custom began fairly recently in Church history.

During periods of national crisis, it became popular to post a country’s flag inside churches. The practice showed another layer of unanimity within the assembly of believers, signified the country’s prayers for security and peace, and tapped the emotional relationship between national pride and religious belief. When the periods of crisis waned, the flags remained. It probably seemed unpatriotic to remove them.

The papal flag commonly took up a position next to the national flag. It carries the

pope’s coat of arms, a triple tiara and crossed keys, symbolizing his ministry as ruler and successor to Peter, the apostle to whom Jesus entrusted the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, and who, tradition holds, first served as bishop of the Church at Rome. The tiara and keys are depicted in the noble colors of silver and gold.

The two flags often adorned a church’s sanctuary. However, since the Second Vatican Council’s appeal for simplicity in the liturgy, the Sanctuary has become more reserved for those features necessary for the celebration of Mass. The removal of flags from the Sanctuary does not promote disloyalty to Church or state, but may assist the prayer of those gathered for the Eucharist by keeping their attention fixed on its central symbols: the Altar, Ambo (a.k.a. Pulpit) and Chair, as well as the bread and wine.

At funerals, a national flag may be placed on a coffin before it arrives at the church and after it leaves (Order of Christian Funerals #132). During the funeral, a coffin is covered with a white pall, symbolizing the baptismal garment.

From the Desk of your Pastoral Minister

The New Normal......Where do I go now…… I am as frustrated and still scared about

what our future looks like and what we potentially may be facing as you may be. I have

prayed and meditated a lot and this is what hit me like a ton of bricks. We are not in control or in charge of any of this. What we can do is use our brain that God gave us to use good judgement and reach out to our brothers and sisters. God gave us Free Will and it is up to us to follow His teachings. I like many of you are taking it slow as we begin our journey with the New Normal. I am back to work in the Parish Center instead of working from home; it is different and yet the same. We have all had to be a bit more creative as we try to reach out to our families, friends and our community. Please know that I am available if you need to talk. I may be reached at my office in the Parish Center at 413.786.8200 ext. 3 Monday – Thursday 9 AM – 4 PM.

Try to pick a time and just sit with God; talk to Him as if He is sitting next to you…be patient and see what He has for you. He may prompt you to call a family member, write a note to someone or someone may come to your mind to pray for even if you don’t know the reason. Remember that He is in charge and He loves each and every one of you so much…You are never forgotten.

I lean on God to lead me where I need to go, to do what He is asking of me. Since Covid-19 hit us I was lead to write small articles in hopes of reaching out to all of you. His message to me was very clear and persistent; these were His words to me….talk to your brothers and sisters…my children. Help them to know they are not alone. I am…..I am ever present; I am here when you wake; I shower you with love always; I am by your side when you stumble; I will hold you in your sadness and fear; I am your ever present healing Father.

God bless, Deb Briancesco RN
