Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During Ash Wednesday services, the foreheads of worshipers will lightly be rubbed with the sign of the cross with ashes. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Is the process of learning about the Catholic faith and being formed in that faith. For a baptized Christian, reception into full communion with the Catholic Church involves reception of the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) and then a Profession of Faith followed by the celebration of Confirmation and the Eucharist. For someone never baptized, the person, once prepared, receives baptism, confirmation and first Eucharist during mass. If you are interested please contact Fr. Mike . 092-2

Fast and Abstinence And Other Acts Of Penance For Lent

The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2014, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their 59th birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world.

Flu Season Remember: if the person next to you does not offer you his/her hand at the sign of peace this is most likely the reason. Don’t be offended. During flu season it is a very good idea to give a sincere “nod of the head” during the sign of peace. Stay healthy!

Please remember the person on the sick list must agree to have his/her name appear in the bulletin.

Lent is marked by a time of prayer and

preparation to celebrate Easter. Since Sundays

celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the six Sundays

that occur during Lent are not counted as part of

the 40 days of Lent, and are referred to as the

Sundays in Lent. The number 40 is connected with

many biblical events, but especially with the forty

days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for

His ministry by facing the temptations that could

lead him to abandon his mission and calling.

St. Hedwig’s Easter Food Drive Our Easter Food Drive is now underway. We are accepting donations of boxed and canned foods or monetary donations. See Philip Tarashuk or Gina Dubinski in the back of the church. Thank you for your generosity.

Sunday’s Gospel:

Matthew 6:24-34

Gospel Summary Matthew’s Gospel this week continues the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus encourages his disciples to notice how the Father cares for even the smallest of creatures, and assures them that their heavenly Father provides even more for their needs. Reflection for Parents It is easy to think that the adult members of a family are the ones who bear the greatest share of anxieties and concerns. But children and youth bear their share of anxieties, too. Will they fit in at a new school, in a new neighborhood, on a new team? Will they pass the homework assignment, the test, or the year-end exam? In the spirit of the Gospel, they worry about basic things such as clothing and food, too. Listening carefully to what our children are saying about their day and their interactions with others, and creating an environment of open and honest communication do much create a spirit of God’s peace and care in the home.
