Our pastor Fr. John Sassani will celebrate the Mass and Anointing of the Sick. Following refreshments, Sr. Rosemary Mulvihill will speak on “Where is God? Searching for the Divine in the midst of suffering and strife”. Rosemary Mulvihill is a Sister of St Joseph, originally from Australia. With a background in Education, Psychology and Spirituality, she currently serves as the Executive Director of Sacred Threads, a

non-profit group whose mission is to support, connect, and nourish the spiritual lives of women. The evening is designed to bring joy, hope, and peace to those living with serious/chronic illness, and their caregivers, family and friends. The Mass and program will both be held downstairs at Our Lady’s church. Refugee Ministry - Search for Part Time Work

The father of our refugee family, Mujahid Komi, is now working at Minigrow in Copley Square. However, his hours are varied and not full time. We are therefore asking parishioners who know of possible part time projects and/or employment opportunities to send an email to Bob Gill at [email protected]. Thank you for your help and for your continued donations to the Refugee Ministry.

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

Yippee! School is out for the summer! I hope everyone has a great summer!

Caring in the name of Jesus: Two examples: the hand-made gift bags given at baptisms at Sacred Heart and last weekend’s food drive at Our Lady’s.

Rivals or Brothers and Sisters? " In your relations with other people, try to see primarily with the heart. You can look at others closely with your eyes without necessarily really “seeing” them. Many people are unhappy because they have never been seen by a heart. Eyes must have their roots in the heart if they are to ever see. Jesus was crucified more by the stares of the Pharisees than by the nails of the soldiers. Eyes that have no contact with the heart are cold and see rivals and competitors everywhere. Eyes that have entered into union with the heart are warm and encounter only brothers and sisters." -- Fr. Wilfrid Stinissen, S.J.

A warm welcome to Sacred Heart and Our Lady’s! Whether you are relatively new, or you have been here for a long time, we hope you feel at home and consider making us your spiritual home. We are glad you are here. Welcome!

Cardinal Sean on not separating immigrant children from their parents (6/12/18): “These individuals and families are fleeing documented violence, chaos and murder in the neighborhoods of Central America. The United States is now openly before the world using children as pawns to enforce a hostile immigration policy. This strategy is morally unacceptable and denies the clear danger weighing upon those seeking our assistance. As a Catholic bishop, I support political and legal authority. I have always taught respect for the civil law and will continue to do so. But, I cannot be silent when our country’s immigration policy destroys families, traumatizes parents, and terrorizes children. The harmful and unjust policy of separating children from their parents must be ended."

Pope Francis on protecting babies in the womb with special needs (6/16/18): The pope urged families to accept children “as God gives them to us.”

Sports: Can the Sox overcome the “Evil Empire,” a.k.a. the New York Yankees. The two teams continue a neck and neck battle. All four major Boston Pro Sports Teams are good enough to win it all this year. Wouldn’t that be awesome!

Love and God bless you! ~ Fr. Dan

Pastoral Council Nominations It's that time of year again! Four of our twelve Pastoral Council Members have completed their terms, and new members must be called from our communities. On the weekends in June, you will find Pastoral Council Nomination Forms in the pews of both churches. Please take the time to prayerfully consider who in your parish would be a good representative on the Pastoral Council. Pastoral Council Members meet with the pastor and collaborative staff six times per year. They advise the pastor on vision and programming in the collaborative. They bring the concerns and observations of other parishioners to the attention of the pastor. They will also be instrumental in the writing of our new Pastoral Plan, which will take place throughout the course of next year. If you have any questions about the Pastoral Council or the nominating process, please email Brian Romer Niemiec ([email protected]).

Explanation Mass Text Available! If you worshipped with us June 9 and 10, you were present at our Explanation Mass, which used ten one-minute statements to explain the different parts of the Mass and why we do what we do when we do!

Many people expressed a desire to have a copy of the text that was used, so we have made it available both online at sholnewton.org/go-deeper as well as in paper form at the church doors. Grab one for yourself and maybe one for a friend or neighbor as well!

If you’d like to learn even more about the beauty of the Mass, see the bulletin reflections each week, or read all of them online at sholnewton.org/go-deeper

AEDs at Both Churches An AED -- Automated external defibrillator for heart emergencies is located in the central foyer of both churches. What should one do if someone is in need of medical attention that may be heart related? (1) Call 911 immediately. (2) Call out for medical personnel in the congregation -- we have loads of them – and follow their instructions. (3) Notify the priest. (4) If called for, use the AED – it is self-explanatory. Though a non-medical person can use it, please defer to any medical personnel as to its use. (5) Send someone to the doors of the church to keep an eye out for the Ambulance or Fire Dept. so that they can be guided directly to the person in need. (6) Pray to God for the health of the person.

June 24 ~ Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist

From his birth, John the Baptist was “a light to the nations” and one who grew strong in God’s spirit. While John knew he was not the messiah, he also knew that his role was to prepare people’s hearts for the coming of Christ. In what ways are you, like John the Baptist, “a light for the nations” leading others to Christ? Who are the people in your life that need to be pointed toward Christ?

Praying with Creation: The Plastic Challenge

In response to Pope Francis’ call for us to “counteract the throwaway culture which affects the entire planet,” we can: • Refuse or say no to disposable plastic whenever and wherever possible. Choose items that are not packaged in plastic, and carry your own bags, containers and utensils. Say, “no straw, please.” • Reuse durable, non-toxic straws, utensils, to-go containers, bottles, bags, and other everyday items. • Choose glass, paper, stainless steel, wood, ceramic, and bamboo over plastic. -From the Catholic Climate Covenant

Spam Email Alert (Again!) Several times now, staff members and parishioners have received emails from fraudsters impersonating Fr. John or other parish leaders and requesting financial help (usually to purchase iTunes gift cards). These are spam/phishing emails! As a rule, these emails should be deleted immediately—they are almost always fraudulent! If you are in doubt about the authenticity of an email, call the parish office for advice!

The above reflection first appeared online through the Center for Liturgy at the University of Notre Dame and can be read in its entirety at http://churchlife.nd.edu/?s=the+mass+for+millennials&submit=Search. While it was originally written for an audience of college and graduate students, the beauty of the Mass is something that we can all consider and savor. We hope that you enjoy these reflections, consider prayerfully how you are called to engage or reengage in the Mass, and share these words with your loved ones. Timothy P. O’Malley is the owner of this content.

When First Year Students enter the university each fall, they are provided the opportunity for a prompt and thor-ough indoctrination into the Notre Dame football culture. They learn the gestures, the cheers, and the songs that will punctuate their existence during their time on campus, and that will continue to help define their identities as alumni and alumnae long into the future. These traditions are not something that students have the option to create or define themselves. Rather, they are received: each student must ultimately decide whether or not their individual “I” will become part of the collective “We” of the Notre Dame stu-dent section.

There may be something of an analogy in this image, which allows us a window into what the Creed teaches us about faith. The recitation of the Creed at Mass seems to contra-dict everything we think we know about faith today. Faith, or belief, is something subjective: I search the abstract realm of faith for truth, and I decide in my own mind and heart what seems the most convincing and what I will as-sent to. This subjectivity clashes with the inherent objectiv-ity of the Creed, which is essentially a laundry list of prop-ositions (presented without supporting arguments), that we are required to profess every time we go to Mass. The Church literally puts words in our mouths to recite, and we obediently and thoughtlessly recite them.

But there is actually a dynamic interplay between “I” and “We” and “I” and “You” in the Profession of Faith. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger described it as a dialogue, as each arti-cle of faith that makes up the Creed is presented before the individual believer for him or her to give their assent to:

“Do you believe in One God, the Father Almighty…?” “Yes, I believe in One God, the Father Almighty…” “Do you believe in One Lord, Jesus Christ…?” “Yes, I believe in One Lord, Jesus Christ…”

The Creed expresses in formula what was once (in the early Church) a dialogue. This formula teaches us that “...belief is not the result of lonely meditation in which the “I”, freed from all ties and reflecting alone on the truth, thinks some-

thing out for itself; on the contrary, it is the result of a dia-logue, the expression of hearing, receiving, and answering that guides man through the exchanges of “I” and “You” to the “We” of those who all believe in the same way (Introduction to Christianity, 90).

Faith, then, is not philosophy. Faith is something that is received or, rather, something that is heard and responded to – like Notre Dame students receiving the traditions and culture that defines our school’s student section. Faith comes from hearing: it is “the reception of something that I have not thought out, so that in the last analysis thinking in the context of faith is always a thinking over of something previously heard and received” (91).

What is more, faith is not an abstract search for truth: it is on a different plane from the realm of “idea” entirely. The profession of the Creed takes belief out of abstraction, then, and places it under our feet – it is concrete, common, and as hard as the ground we all walk on each day. In fact, it is the ground we walk on – it is the way. Ratzinger put it nicely when he wrote that “Christianity is not a system of knowledge but a way.” Philosophy may provide an idea of

truth, but Christian belief offers us the idea that truth is a way. This way is Jesus Christ.

Thus the Creed (and Christianity as a whole, for that mat-ter) is not the rote recitation of a list of ideas or beliefs: it is the reminder of “the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction” (Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est: 217). And further, belief, in this paradigm, is not merely subjective (though there is something deeply personal in it), but a fellowship.

Thus belief embraces, as essential parts of itself, the profes-sion of faith, the word, and the unity it effects; it embraces entry into the community’s worship of God and, so, finally

the fellowship we call Church. Christian belief is not an idea but life; it is, not mind existing for itself, but incarnation, mind in the body of history and its “We”. It is, not the mysticism of the self-identification of the mind with God, but obedience and service: going beyond one-self, freeing the self precisely through being taken into ser-vice by something not made or thought out by oneself, the liberation of being taken into service for the whole (Introduction to Christianity, 100).

The Creed we recite is the locus where the “I” becomes part of the “We” – in some way it even carries us into the perfect expression of harmony and unity that is the Eucha-rist. Rather than simply list things that Christians believe, it is the foundation on which the whole thing is built.

Psalm: Trace the words and

learn to pray like Jesus!

Gospel: Mary’s relative Elizabeth wanted to have a child but she was

getting too old. God told her and her husband Zechariah that they would have a baby who should be named John. Zechariah did not believe God right away, so he lost his voice until the baby was born. When the baby was born, Zechariah wrote on a tablet, “His name is John!” John the Baptist was born, and Zechariah could speak again!

Learn at Mass: Before Mass, dip your fingers in holy water and pray the Sign of

the Cross. The holy water reminds us of our Baptism!

Solve the puzzle to see what Zechariah

wanted to say! Then, color John the Baptist

and his family.

Summer Ice Cream Social!

So many of us miss coffee hour during the summer months; this year we are planning to host a couple of ice cream socials. Save the Date for the first one: July 8 after the 9am Mass. Hope you can make it!

Summer Community Choir

at the 9:00 Mass! The Sacred Heart Liturgical Choir will take a much-deserved break for the summer months, but, of course, we all still enjoy singing our faith! We warmly welcome ALL parishioners who enjoy singing to join a new Summer Community Choir at Sacred Heart. This choir will sing for the 9:00am Mass through Labor Day weekend. Please come forward to the choir chairs when you arrive for Mass and we will make sure you have what you need. No prior choral experience is necessary and there will be no rehearsal - just come as you are and enjoy singing in your parish community. This is also a great way for parents to share the joy of music and faith together with their children while at Mass. Young adults, young families with children and seasoned parishioners - all are welcome! Please contact Erica for more information: [email protected]

Vegetable Oil Needed! In June, we are collecting vegetable oil. Donations can be dropped off during the week in the lower elevator lobby OR at weekend Masses in either the elevator lobby or the upper church foyer at Sacred Heart Church.

Make Your Parish Giving Easier Stop worrying about bringing envelopes and writing checks! Sacred Heart provides Online Giving as an electronic tool for contributions so you can give via the internet. Online Giving helps you maintain your giving even if you cannot be here at Mass and automatically records all payments for easily accessible tax records. This also helps the parish streamline our cash flow, especially during bad weather or vacation times. Visit Sacred Heart’s Online Giving portal today at https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/1009 to get started today. Questions? Contact the parish office.
