A Word from Fr. Andrew

Dear Parishioners and Friends, “His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd.” In today’s gospel Mark uses the word pity in its truest sense. It means more than just sadness or empathy. Mark is conveying the sentiment that what Jesus saw was gut wrenching and heartbreaking. It made me wonder of how many things I see today that cause me to feel the same way. We live in a world where our immigration policies are tearing families apart. We are afraid to allow our children to go out alone. The backfire of a car is a reminder of terrorists’ attacks. Addiction has run rampant in our own community, and our children and parents are dying. As I read on in the gospel, I further wonder what my role is in becoming like the shepherds who Jesus sends forth to look after his sheep by simply loving them and gathering them into His fold. I truly believe that He sends us off to be today’s shepherds to one another. We are not going to change the world in its entirety, but we can do much to bring about good in our own little corner of the world, one “sheep” at a time. Fathers and mothers shepherd their children. Teachers and coaches are shepherds to their students and teams. Counselors shepherd clients. Neighbor can shepherd neighbor. Each time we gather together as a community of faith greeting one another, welcoming each other, and praying with, and for, each other we become the shepherds that Jesus sends to attend His flock. And when we have realized this , and we have done the best we can, it is important for us to spend time alone with Jesus. It is important to go to that deserted place, whether it is to the quiet of the church, behind closed doors in your own home, on a mountaintop or at the seashore. It is most important for us to spend time with Jesus and to let Him shepherd us. We let Him help us to rest and to regroup, so that He can then send us out to do it all over again! Love, Fr. Andrew
