Holy Saturday + Easter Sunday

The most holy days of the Church year are called the Triduum, and consist of: Holy Thursday + Good Friday + Holy Saturday and then by extension Easter Sunday, this period is also called the Easter Triduum. It is important that all Christians spend these days in prayer, reflection and study of the Scriptures. To better provide for that and to better set an example to all the faithful we are going to close our parish offices early these three days (Holy Thursday + Good Friday & Holy Saturday) to allow our staff and volunteer leadership the proper time for prayer.

FAST & ABSTINENCE DURING LENT

Ancient tradition has regarded Wednesdays & Fridays as PENITENTIAL DAYS. This comes in part from our observance of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

For centuries Church law has supported this ancient tradition by requiring us to:

ABSTAIN from meat on all Fr idays of Lent and Ash Wednesday...

That is meat from any warm-blooded animals, thus no beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey, etc. etc. It is obligatory for healthy persons age 14-60 & strongly encouraged for all healthy people. You can however enjoy any cold-blooded animals, such as fish, frog, snake or lizard, etc. FAST, we are required to fast on Good Friday:

FAST means to eat less than half what we would normally eat in a day, that is the minimum requirement of the law and of our ancient tradition; thus to eat 49% or less of what you normally eat each day. It is obligatory for healthy persons age 14-60 & strongly encouraged for all healthy people. Optional ABSTINENCE every Friday of the year for WORLD PEACE: While we are required to abstain from meat on Fridays of Lent, Pope St. John Paul II asked us to voluntarily abstain from meat (or some other culturally significant food) every Friday of the year as a voluntary offering of prayer through abstinence for WORLD PEACE.

The spirit of both our law and tradition is to eat more simple meals every Friday of Lent and Ash Wednesday. It is not the spirit of our faith to enjoy expensive meals of shrimp and lobster on these days…..the idea is to unite us with the poor of the world who have so much less than we do.

Meat was once a symbol of wealth, but today there are many sea foods that are more expensive. The true spirit of the law and tradition is to eat more simple foods, less expensive…the poor of the world cannot afford a hamburger, so we give it up…but they cannot afford shrimp either…so why not give it up too. Eat simply, so others may simply eat.

This helps us to respect, love and treat with dignity the poor of the world, who are our brothers & sisters, our family. In drawing closer to the poor, we draw closer to God, and to His whole family. This is a very holy moment, not a sacrifice, but a joyful union with God and His/our family in need throughout the world.

6 LENT - CUARESMA TRIDUUM + THE THREE DAYS

Holy Thursday + Good Friday + Holy Saturday Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Passion, and

The Great Easter Vigil

YOU ARE INVITED

Each of these three days, known as the TRIDUUM, is one celebration of Passion, Death & Resurrection. In the life of the Church there are no other days more important, no other time as special as the TRIDUUM. It is one cele-bration, one liturgy, one act of worship that is three days long celebrating the most special and most holy days of our Christian faith.

On Holy Thursday we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper with the Washing of the Feet and then procession of the Eucharist to an Altar of Repose (in Hall) where we are invited to remain in adoration till midnight. All this recalls Our Lord’s Last Supper, giving us the Eucharist, washing the feet of the Disciples, and His agony in the garden. When the Blessed Sacrament is removed at mid-night we are reminded of His arrest.

On Good Friday, the Passion reaches its climax in the death of Jesus on the Cross. We mourn, we ache, we en-ter into the pain, sadness and fear of Mary the Mother of God and that of the Disciples.

On Holy Saturday, at first we wait, still accompanying Mary and the Disciples in their pain and confusion. Then in the darkness of Holy Saturday night we celebrate the Resurrection of the Light of the World who dispels all darkness. In the light, we Baptize, we Confirm and we celebrate First Eucharist with new members of our Catho-lic-Christian faith.

Of these three days no one day is more important. Each day is an important part of one celebration of hope, peace and eternal life. The Eucharist of Holy Thursday gives us hope. His death on Good Friday gives Him peace and us the promise of His peace. The Resurrection of Holy Saturday night gives us eternal life. Without any one of these there cannot be any of the others.

Good Friday is a very popular day as the sufferings of Christ have touched lives of so many people. The highpoint of Good Friday spiritually is the celebration of the Solemn Liturgical Service and within that service the Passion Gospel of John, the Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion. Please remember that Good Friday is more complete, more meaningful when we celebrate Holy Thursday and the Great Easter Vigil of Holy Saturday.

TRIDUO + LOS TRES DÍAS

Misa de la Cena del Señor, La Pasión, y La Gran Vigilia Pascual

USTEDES ESTÁN INVITADOS Cada uno de estos tres días, conocido como TRIDUO,

es una celebración de Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección. En la vida de la Iglesia no hay otros días más importantes, no hay otro momento tan especial como el TRIDUO. Es una celebración, una liturgia, un acto de culto que celebra tres días, los más especiales y más sagrados de nuestra fe cris-tiana.

El Jueves Santo celebramos la Misa de la Cena del Se-ñor con el Lavado de los Pies y luego la procesión de la Eucaristía a un Altar de Reposo (en El Salón) en donde es-tamos invitados a permanecer en adoración hasta la media-noche. Todo esto nos recuerda la Última Cena de Nuestro Señor, dándonos la Eucaristía, lavando los pies de los Dis-cípulos, y Su agonía en el jardín. Cuando se remueve el Santísimo Sacramento a la medianoche nos recuerda Su captura.

El Viernes Santo, la Pasión alcanza su clímax en la muerte de Jesús en la Cruz. Nos lamentamos, añoramos, entramos en el dolor, la tristeza y el temor de María la Ma-dre de Dios y de los Discípulos.

El Sábado Santo (Sábado de Gloria), primero espera-mos, todavía acompañando a María y los Discípulos en su dolor y confusión. Entonces, en la oscuridad de la noche del Sábado Santo, celebramos la Resurrección de la Luz del Mundo que disipa toda oscuridad. A la luz, Bautiza-mos, Confirmamos y celebramos la Primera Eucaristía con nuevos miembros de nuestra fe católica-cristiana.

De estos tres días, ningún día es más importante. Cada día es una parte importante de una celebración de esperan-za, paz y vida eterna. La Eucaristía del Jueves Santo nos da esperanza. Su muerte, el Viernes Santo, nos da Su paz y la promesa de Su paz. La Resurrección del Sábado Santo nos da vida eterna. Sin ninguno de estos no puede haber nin-guno de los otros.

El Viernes Santo es un día muy popular, ya que los su-frimientos de Cristo han tocado las vidas de tantas perso-nas. El punto culminante del Viernes Santo espiritualmente es la celebración del Solemne Servicio Litúrgico y dentro de ese servicio el Evangelio de Juan sobre la Pasión , la Veneración de la Cruz y la Santa Comunión. Recuerden que el Viernes Santo es más completo, más significativo cuando celebramos el Jueves Santo y la Gran Vigilia Pas-cual del Sábado de Gloria.

Viacrusis al Aire Libre Le invitamos a rezar el Viacrusis con nuestras hermosas ESTACIONES EXTERIORES ubicadas frente al Centro Parroquial. Por supuesto, siempre son bienvenido a celebrar el Viacrusis dentro de la iglesia también. Hay un poder único y especial espiritualmente en la celebración de las EL VISCRUSIS AL AIRE LIBRE, ya que Nuestro Señor Jesucristo lo caminó al aire libre; Él lo creó, lo vivió, en las calles de la antigua Jerusalén. Siempre caminen con el Señor, y esta Cuaresma: viajen con Él a lo largo de Su Camino de la Cruz, como lo hizo, al aire libre.

Outdoor Stations of Cross We welcome you to pray the Stations (Way) of the Cross with our beautiful OUTDOOR STATIONS located in front of the Parish Center. Of course you are always most welcome to cele-brate the Stations inside the church as well. There is a unique and special power spiritually in celebrating the STATIONS OUTDOORS -- as Our Lord Jesus Christ walked them outdoors; He created them, lived them, in the streets of ancient Jerusalem. Always walk with the Lord, and this Lent: journey with Him along His Way of The Cross, as He did, outdoors.

EASTER MASS SCHEDULE We welcome you and your family and friends and neighbors to join us for Easter Sunday Mass. Our schedule for Easter 2018, includes a total of 12 Masses.

HOLY SATURDAY EASTER VIGIL March 31, 2018 + 8:00pm

One of the most ancient traditions of the Church is the celebra-tion of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night. There is no Mass that morning, only this magnificent liturgy late in the evening, near to or just after nightfall (darkness). This ancient and unique Mass lasts about 3 hours and includes blessings done only once a year and only at this Mass. It is considered the most important and most holy Mass of the Church year. Come and join us for the “First Celebration of Easter, The Great Easter Vigil”. And yes it counts for Sunday!

EASTER SUNDAY April 1, 2018

On Easter Sunday we will have 7 Masses in the parish church (6 in English & 1 in Spanish) plus 4 additional Masses in Cavanagh Hall (3 in English & 1 in Spanish). Masses in the Hall are most beautiful and spiritually uplifting with spectacular decorations and music, equal to any in the church, but a smaller congregation and plenty of extra seating. VIGILIA PASCUAL EL SÁBADO DE GLORIA 31 de marzo de 2018 + 8:00pm

Una de las tradiciones más antiguas de la Iglesia es la celebra-ción de la Vigilia de Pascual el sábado por la noche. No hay mi-sa esa mañana, sólo esta magnífica liturgia por la tarde, justo después del anochecer (oscuridad). Esta misa antigua y única dura unas 3 horas e incluye bendiciones que se hacen solamente una vez al año y sólo en esta Misa. Es considerada la Misa más importante y más santa del año de la Iglesia. Vengan y únanse a nosotros a la “Primera Celebración de la Pascua, la Gran Vigilia Pascual”. ¡Y por supuesto, cuenta para el domingo!

El domingo de Pascua tendremos 7 misas en la iglesia (6 en in-glés y 1 en español) y 4 misas adicionales en el Salón Cavanagh (3 en inglés y 1 en español). Las misas en el salón son tan bellas y espirituales, con espectaculares decoraciones y música, igual que en la iglesia, con una congregación más pequeña y con sufi-cientes asientos adicionales. Support Catholic Jail Chaplains HOLY THURSDAY

March 29th On Holy Thursday there normally is not a collection

during the “Mass of the Lord’s Supper”. However, we will again this year follow a very beautiful custom in our parish and will have a collection at the regular offertory time, the entire collection to support the ministry of Cath-olic Chaplains in the county jails and camps throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Local governments do not support the chaplains, we are the only help they have.

A fully trained and credentialed team of lay chaplains staff our many incarceration facilities, sometimes serving even 2 or 3 sites each. And each is assisted by a team of volunteers who teach religion, share our faith and prepare men & women plus boys and girls for sacraments.

The only source for salaries and materials for religion classes, the only means to buy hosts and other Mass needs is you……without your help there would be no Catholic presence in our county jails, in which about 50% of the population is Catholic.

As we mark the night in which Our Lord was arrested it is especially meaningful to support those who bring Our Lord to the men, women and youth in our county jails. Plus our Catholic Chaplains also reach out to the victims of crime and minister to them; your donation will help bring God’s peace and love to victims as well as those in jail.

Thanks to the loving support of our other three priests, Father Bill celebrates Mass at the Los Angeles Central Ju-venile Hall every third Sunday of the month at 8:00am; as a volunteer. There are 23 youth camps and jails in the County of Los Angeles, plus many adult institutions --- they are hurting for priests to provide Mass just once a week. Please support the lay chaplains and lay volunteers who do such much in the absence of a priest. Please help them in the example of Jesus the prisoner and victim.

Apoye a los capellanes católicos de la cárcel JUEVES SANTO

29 de marzo El jueves Santo normalmente no hay una colecta durante

la “Misa de la Cena del Señor”. Sin embargo, este año segui-remos una muy hermosa costumbre en nuestra parroquia y tendremos una colecta durante el ofertorio, lo colectado se destinará completamente para apoyar al ministerio de Cape-llanes Católicos en las cárceles y correccionales del condado en toda la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles. Los gobiernos lo-cales no apoyan a los capellanes Nosotros somos la única ayuda que ellos tienen.

Un equipo de capellanes laicos totalmente capacitados y acreditados cuenta con personal en muchas de nuestras insta-laciones de encarcelamiento, que a veces brindan servicio in-cluso a 2 o 3 sitios cada uno. Y cada uno cuenta con la asis-tencia de un equipo de voluntarios que enseñan religión, comparten nuestra fe y preparan a hombres, mujeres, niños y niñas para recibir los sacramentos.

La única fuente de salarios y materiales para las clases de religión, el único medio para comprar hostias y otras necesi-dades para la misa son ustedes… sin su ayuda no habría pre-sencia católica en las cárceles de nuestro condado, en las cuales aproximadamente el 50% de la población es católica.

Al observar la noche en que nuestro Señor fue arrestado, es especialmente significativo apoyar a quienes traen a Nuestro Señor a los hombres, mujeres y jóvenes en las cárce-les de nuestro condado. Además, nuestros capellanes católi-cos también se acercan a las víctimas del crimen y les minis-tran; su donación ayudará a llevar la paz y el amor de Dios tanto a las víctimas como a los que están en la cárcel.

Gracias al amoroso apoyo de nuestros tres sacerdotes, el Padre Bill celebrará una Misa en la Prisión Juvenil de Los Ángeles cada tercer domingo de cada mes a las 8:00 a.m. co-mo voluntario. Hay 23 prisiones juveniles y cárceles en el condado de Los Ángeles, además de muchas instituciones para adultos--- estas están necesitados de sacerdotes para ce-lebrar misa solo una vez a la semana. Por favor apoyen a los capellanes laicos y voluntarios laicos que hacen tanto en la ausencia de un sacerdote. Por favor, ayúdenlos en el ejemplo de Jesús, el prisionero y la víctima.
