Sacred Heart Catholic Church The Ascension of the Lord –May 13, 2018 Reflection from the Pastor: Today’s First Reading is the opening chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. This book, like St. Luke’s Gospel, are traditionally believed to form one complete story that covers the Incarnation of Jesus to the spread of the Christian faith by Jesus’ disciples. It is the story of how God has saved the world. The message is for everyone, but it is addressed to one person, Theophilus. The name means “Friend of God”, and could either be a proper name or an honorary title, both being commonly used in that era. We don’t know who Theophilus was; however, there is a Catholic novelist named Michael D. O’Brien who wrote a novel called Theophilos (note the spelling difference). It is the story of who Theophilus the man might have been. Without giving away too much of the story, Theophilus is the adoptive father of Saint Luke. The story is about how Theophilus comes to faith in Christ through learning about the life of his adoptive son, Luke. I highly recommend you put this book on your summer reading list. Fr. Sacred Heart Catholic Church The Ascension of the Lord –May 13, 2018

Reflection from the Pastor:

Today’s First Reading is the opening chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.

This book, like St. Luke’s Gospel, are traditionally believed to form one

complete story that covers the Incarnation of Jesus to the spread of the

Christian faith by Jesus’ disciples. It is the story of how God has saved the

world. The message is for everyone, but it is addressed to one person,

Theophilus. The name means “Friend of God”, and could either be a proper

name or an honorary title, both being commonly

used in that era. We don’t know who Theophilus

was; however, there is a Catholic novelist named

Michael D. O’Brien who wrote a novel called

Theophilos (note the spelling difference). It is the

story of who Theophilus the man might have

been. Without giving away too much of the story,

Theophilus is the adoptive father of Saint Luke.

The story is about how Theophilus comes to faith

in Christ through learning about the life of his

adoptive son, Luke. I highly recommend you put

this book on your summer reading list.
