Why Corner

Fairness

Is God fair? Is He just in His decision? First, Jesus said, "like the landowner (God) went out." The landowner went out five times to recruit people to work in the vineyard. He knew that they needed to work and that they needed a job. Some of the workers have waited for a long time, many from dawn till late noon. Apparently, they were desperate for work. The fact that these workers waited for this long under the long hot sun gave us insight that they were under the mercy of anyone that was willing to hire them. So it is as God with us. He doesn't need us to do anything for Him. It is a privilege that we are able to do things for Him. It is an honor that God even considers us to work for Him and that He takes notice of us and how we are important to Him. Do you consider that what you do for God is a privilege and an honor?  Second, Jesus said, "hire laborers for his vineyard." All the workers were given a very detailed specific task, to work in the vine-yard. The landowner is known for his generosity and he must have provided all the essential tools for these workers to be effective in their day’s work. Some will weave and fix baskets to hold the fruit of the vine, some must have been picking fruit from the vine, some will sort out the fruit, some will clean the fruit, and some will be crushing the fruit for wine. All the workers were important in their duties. God continues to choose us to work in the modern day vineyard. All of us know our talents, gifts and capabilities which God has given us. God lets us do what is good to help Him make the best wine in His vine-yard, where we are most effective. Are you living and doing the best where you are in your life for God? Are you helping Him to make the best wine in people’s lives?  Third, Jesus said, "Summon the laborers and give them their pay, be-ginning with the last and ending with the first." The landowner only made a contract with the first group and not with any other groups. He knew how to motivate them by rewarding them at the end of a work day. He gave them their remuneration, payment or incentive. Why did he began with the last and pay them the same you might ask? First, it is his money so he can do whatever he wants with them. It is like God's grace. We all need it, but some of us need more than oth-ers. Second, it showed his generosity. He gave them all the same be-cause that was essentially what they needed for the laborers to take care of themselves and their loved ones. If he gave them less, their loved ones would not be taken care of. God continues to provide for all our and our loved ones needs, even to this moment. Third, it em-phasizes that reward does not depend on quantity but quality. If both, it would be the best. It is very rare to find someone who can capitalize on both of these aspects at the same time when it comes to cultivating God's vineyard. Fourth, be happy when God is generous to others. Some of us have a problem admitting and seeing this. Are you happy with what God has given to you and your loved ones? Do you want more? (Why corner continued on next page)

(Why Corner, continued) Fourth, God's standard of reward is different from our standard. Why should we tell God what to do when it is up to Him? Why should we even be envious when the reward is not up to us to give? Why should we be jealous of how God wants to take care of others in special ways? Why should we even ask the question or scrutinize God when we should not? Why? Let God be God. Let Him make the call or the decision for Himself for the things that belong to Him. Focus on what you can do for Him and for others. When we shift our paradigm of attitude in this way, we will be very happy with God and with others. Our lives will have a different meaning and have more purpose. We no longer will ask the question, "what’s in it for me?" Rather, it will be of thanksgiving to God and of the privilege to serve God and the people He loves. "Don't worry be happy!" Is God fair? Is He just? Absolutely! -Fr. Young
