SACRED HEART HISTORY: The Cradles of the Parish: Where did the original parishioners live? The four cradles of the parish were Paddy’s Acre, (named for Pat Cunningham) now Clinton Place; Kerry Cross (named by Timothy Sullivan a civil war veteran and early settler) now the intersection of Beacon and Walnut Streets; Cork City (named because of the number of settlers from Cork, Ireland) now North Street and Cummings Road near the library; Thompsonville, named for Thompson an early settler, had some Irish and lots of German inhabitants. So the next time you go to the library, shop at Whole Foods, visit Mary Nelson or the Regan’s on Clinton Place, or head to the Wegman’s via Langley Road, you’ll be passing several older homes of founding parishioners. Enjoy your ride through history.

SIGNINGS “Pick your own battles” is a common quote we hear

when we face trials and tribulations, especially those we may see as our enemies. We may wonder why we have to pick our own battles and that life is never

fair. Because of that, we may end up feeling that we never win anything. Actually, here is a news flash... life isn't always about winning certain

things. Instead, it should be about winning the right way, which is the exact opposite of what we expect in winning. No wonder the Catholic Church has

many, many saints who were martyred for the love of their faith, especially their love for Christ as he died loving us. That is what winning should be about. I would never forget that last summer our Deaf

Catholic youth had to endure an unexpected daunting 18-mile pilgrim walk to the Papal Closing Mass during World Youth Day in Krakow which should

have been a 7-mile walk! Not even one pilgrim winced or whined about these extra 11 miles of walking through so many hills under the hot summer

sun. This experience reminds me of the following quote mentioned in the Gospel today: “Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go for

two miles” (Matthew 5:41). Indeed, going for extra miles can bear much fruit in our lives as we would be able to see why God shows us how endurance and

perseverance can be awesome virtues in our trials and tribulations! That is indeed a grace from God, as I write this on St. Valentine's Day! Blessings on

your earthly life journey!

In Christ, Fr. Shawn
