When SCTArsquos board Secretary Deborah Derov saw an ad about a textile tour in Bali she knew it was the trip she had been dreaming about for a long time The tour was organized by Barb Alexander and Cheryl Joyce Their company Bali Fiber Tours offers several tours each year for small groups of women (wwwbalifibertourscom) Barb had previously owned a shop in British Columbia where she sold Balinese textile products she had carefully curated on her many trips to Bali Interestingly both Barb and Cheryl are retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers

In May 2016 Deb joined seven other Canadian and American women visiting Bali to get hands-on experience and up-close demonstrations by expert native Balinese batik ikat weaving silk painting and indigo dying artists During their two-week stay when they werenrsquot busy learning textile techniques and shopping they visited museums and temples went to cooking class toured rice paddies and a monkey preserve and

ate barbecued shrimp on the beach at sunset All in the beautiful setting of BaliDeb and her tour-mates stayed in four-star hotels in

Denpasar (the capital city) and Ubud the artistic center of Bali Upon their arrival on the island each guest was greeted with a welcome bag that included a hand painted sarong and various practical items to make their stay more comfortable Most meals were included during tour activities and in the evenings the group usually dined together as a groupDeborah says they were so well taken care of by

Barb and Cheryl that the whole experience was extraordinary She loves elephants and brought back a small polymerclay sculpture by Jon Stuart Anderson And of course lots of fabrics including the rayon batik yardage she designed and helped print with a tjap and a beautiful silk panel she painted Her advice to others is if this sounds like an experience you might enjoy donrsquot waste another minute Yes it was the dream of a lifetime
