Johnson will explain how accessories were used and how shoes and accessories have changed over the ages. Jan Johnson joined the Sacramento State Theatre & Dance Department in the fall of 2014. She has had a long and varied career as educator and professional costume designer and makeup artist. She earned her Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, where she taught stage makeup classes. Jan worked at Pacific Northwest Ballet for ten years on costumes and was lead makeup artist there. She worked on many productions in Seattle at A Contemporary Theater, Seattle Opera, and other theaters. She designed costumes for productions at Seattle Children’s Theater and Pioneer Square Theater. Meet Your New SCTA President: Yvonne Warren The SCTA Board has elected long time member Yvonne Warren as the new President. Yvonne joined SCTA in the mid ’80s while she was still working for the CA Department of Justice. She had learned to sew from her mother and grandmother, and enjoyed making stylishly embellished clothes. And then she and a friend took sewing classes at Sacramento City College. When she started selling her items she saw that sizing was often a problem so the allure of making bags, jewelry and other items that didn’t require fitting took precedence. She started selling her items at craft fairs in the ’90s. Yvonne paid her exhibit fees by selling her jewelry in the office. She would pass around a box of handmade items and at the end of the day take home an envelope of cash. She still does seven or eight shows a year and especially appreciates the Art to Wear show SCTA hosts each November. Yvonne in her workshop Johnson’s Vintage Shoes and Accessories

Carol Radkins How to Market Your Handmade Goods

by Anne Destafano

Carol Radkins of CaroloBags attended the recent Bead Study Group meeting and shared her experiences and thoughts on marketing and selling hand made products Carol has been an SCTA member and a vendor at the Art to Wear amp More sale for the past several years

Carol has been making and selling her bags for 5 years Out of financial necessity she had to decide what she could make and sell to earn some money She had always sewn and had lots of upholstery fabric in her stash She noticed that almost every woman carried a bag even though she didnt Nothing on the market met her needs and expectations She began by making book bags which were easy and quick to make and held her interest First tip is to find something you like to make that holds your interest She sold mainly to family and friends and then tried her first craft show CaroloBags was born She soon expanded to other types of bags

Carol has applied to and sold at many craft shows in California and Nevada The best way to find shows is through word of mouth Often other vendors or customers will comment that her items might do well at ldquosuch and such showrdquo Another tip is to listen to customers and other vendors and do not shy away from craft shows Some can be as profitable as more art focused shows Two web sites for listing of shows are Craftmasterscom and Festivalsnet

Carol suggest keeping good records of all of your show related costs Her rule of thumb is that if the show costs exceed 20 of her sales she does not go back to that show again

Carol uses a photo box with lights and a plain white background for taking photos of her bags And she uses her phone Too much background clutter or ldquostuffrdquo detracts from the product This is important when applying for juried shows

Another tip is to promote your name as often as you can a booth sign a label on bags a metal stamped tag attached to items ribbon or cord with your name printed etc Carolrsquos booth sign includes ldquoBuy from the woman who made it

Carol offered several tips for setting up your booth and working the showbull The layout should begin with the lower priced

items in front to draw people in Bright colors attract people Not too much product on display at once is better You can restock as items sell

bull Organize products by size function andor price Make it easy for the customer to move from one type or category or product to another

bull If a customer buys several items consider giving them a free or discounted item bull It is fine to change the prices of your items for different shows bull Be careful about bargaining down with customers Set reasonable prices for each show and stick with those prices It can be annoying when other vendors reduce their prices by 50 on the second or last day of a show bull Be considerate of yourself and the time and effort you have put into your product

bull Do not sit down in your booth It is ok to rest on a tall chair or stoolbull Discourage other vendors from hanging out in your booth

As for pricing items keep good records of what you spent on the materials shipping printing and your time Put a value on your time based on what you could make per hour at a job in the market place

Carol has three websites and an Etsy store The websites direct people to her Etsy site for sales She uses Facebook to post photos of new items No sales are made from the websites or Facebook Selling via the internet is time consuming Your Etsy site needs to be updated two to three times a week to stay on top of the sellers in your categories

Many thanks to Carol for sharing her experiences and lessons learned with CaroloBags
