GRUPPO SACMI, tecnologie all’avanguardia per l’industria
The SACMI GROUP,cutting-edge technology for industry
e differenziazione produttiva, l’avrebbe portata
e sfavorevoli congiunture economiche, portando

From 9 to 4,175 employees. The story of a Group that has made history
With corporate capital of just 4,500 Italian Lire
(2 Euros today) and a nine-strong staff of mechanics
and blacksmiths, in 1919 the Società Anonima
Cooperativa Meccanici Imola began a long journey
that would, on the wave of growing market
internationalisation and a constant innovative product
differentiation process, make it one of the world’s
leading plant engineering firms.
Unremitting determination on the part of its members
allowed SACMI to get through the difficult 1930s,
marred by dictatorship and difficult economic
circumstances, to successfully complete their first
machine, designed to clean oranges.
After the Second World War, SACMI contributed
to the country’s reconstruction by developing the first
technologies for the ceramic-making companies
of the Sassuolo industrial district and the wider region
of Emilia-Romagna. It started building machines
for the production of metal crown caps - a forerunner
of what would later become the Group’s
multi-business strategy.
The 1960s/1970s were characterised by a strong
international expansion policy, driven by exports,
the acquisition of companies and business units
and the founding of subsidiaries.
Thus, the Cooperative began to take on the shape
of a large multinational Group. By the year 2000,
it had become a key player not only in ceramics plant
engineering but also in the beverage & packaging,
food processing and plastics industries;
today the original 9 employees now number
4,175 and the total net worth of the Group stands
at 600 million Euros.
From core business to multi-business
Maximised investment in research, unwavering
promotion of technological innovation, conscientious
attention to product and service quality, effective
responses to the real needs of world markets,
extreme flexibility in taking advantage
of technological synergies and carrying out operational
in tecnologie d’avanguardia:
• Ceramics
• Packaging
• Food
• Inspection Systems
• Plastics
• Services
Il Centro Ricerche&Sviluppo, cuore pulsante dell’innovazione secondo Sacmi
Innovazione tecnologica e conoscenza rappresentano

Gruppo Sacmi, tecnologie all’avanguardia per l’industria The Sacmi Group, cutting-edge technology for industry
integration in widely differing industries: these,
in short, are the winning strategies that have allowed
the SACMI Group to become a major international
plant engineering firm.
While the Group’s core business has traditionally been
- and remains – the design and construction
of machines and complete plants for the ceramic
industry, SACMI has steadily branched out into other
areas and now has six operating Divisions,
consisting of companies specialised in cutting-edge
technologies:
• Ceramics
• Packaging
• Food
• Inspection Systems
• Plastics
• Services
The Research and Development Centre: the beating heart of innovation - as Sacmi sees it
Technological innovation and know-how represent
invaluable resources for SACMI, and sharply distinguish
the way in which the Group does business within
numerous industries on international markets.
For this reason, SACMI channels enormous energy
and capital into R&D so as to develop new
technological applications to perfect and improve
its range of solutions.
Investments in R&D in 2013 were in line
with the previous years with the Group setting
aside over 20 million Euros.
This shows the Group’s clear commitment to further
development and strengthening of the know-how
that has made SACMI a leading international provider
of industrial technology. A reference point for the
entire Group, the Imola-based Research and
Development Centre consists of a network
of chemical-physical laboratories and experimental
departments for the testing of ceramic/beverage
prototypes and pilot plants, located at the heart of
what is Europe’s most advanced mechatronics district.
Al Centro R&S – iscritto all’Albo Nazionale
rapido, efficace e diretto, dai servizi commerciali
all’after-sales.
A questa presenza si affiancano importanti strumenti
di customer care fruibili telefonicamente o via web
(call center, download di manuali e documenti,
teleassistenza tecnica, e-learning, ecc).
5
The Centre covers an area of 11,662 square meters
and employs over 200 researchers and technicians,
who develop cutting-edge expertise in the ceramic,
packaging and process control system fields and make
it available to the Group.
Included in the National Register of Research Facilities
(drawn up by the Ministry of Universities and Scientific
Research). The Centre also enjoys the support
of technology labs and individual R&D departments
belonging to individual Group companies,
plus partnerships with universities all over the world.
Thanks to this vital commitment, in 2013 SACMI filed
15 Italian and 41 patent national applications
for invention.
We like to think globally... and always have done
The SACMI Group has production plants, distribution
companies and service companies in 25 countries,
and the parent company in Imola (Bologna, Italy)
now controls over 70 firms. This far-reaching global
presence explains why 88% of Group sales come
from exports.
Moreover, the SACMI Group provides efficient
assistance and services all over the world thanks
to a Global Network of approximately 30 companies,
which provide customers with fast, efficient,
direct service on every continent.
This includes everything from commercial services
to after-sales service.
That network is supported by telephone
or web-based customer care services (call centres,
manual/document downloads, technical
remote-assistance services, e-learning, etc.).
A stronger company, enhanced quality of life An inseparable combination for the wellbeing of all
For SACMI “social responsibility” means doing business
by contributing to the enhancement of its employees’
quality of life: this is done by cultivating the individual’s
suddiviso in attività sociali, erogazioni liberali,
6
Gruppo Sacmi, tecnologie all’avanguardia per l’industria The Sacmi Group, cutting-edge technology for industry
professional skills, ensuring safety in the workplace,
promoting sustainable development, safeguarding
the environment and providing the local community
with tangible support and solidarity.
Mutual assistance, cooperation, protection for both
people and community are all intrinsic SACMI values,
and it is thanks to those values that SACMI has
become an industrial Group of worldwide importance
with a unique business model – characterized
by a solid, synergic relationship between management
and staff - able to generate and redistribute value
for partners, customers and suppliers alike.
As in previous years, 2013 saw SACMI document
its social responsibility in the form of a Social Audit,
drawn up in compliance with GBS-Gruppo Bilancio
Sociale accounting practices.
The audit is divided into three main theme areas:
identity, added value and social interaction.
More specifically, SACMI has, on the environmental
protection front, adopted a management system
as per ISO 14001, integrating it with the ISO 9001
and OHSAS 18001 worker safety quality systems.
The company’s strategic environmental policy goals
include the correct disposal and recycling of waste,
emissions control and water purification.
As regards support for the community, the last three
years have seen SACMI set aside more than 1 million
euros, broken down into social activities, donations,
contributions to support agencies and cultural
and sporting events.
More specifically, the reconstruction of Finale Emilia
school, destroyed by an earthquake in May 2012,
was supported in 2013.
9
Andamento dell’esercizio 2013
Progress report 2013
9
costantemente presidiate introducendo elementi
concorrenza internazionale, specialmente cinese.
Smaltatura e Decorazione, dove SACMI è entrata
e decorazione interamente digitale.
2013 proved to be more challenging than 2012.
The unpredictable flow of work orders proved to be
one of the most difficult challenges SACMI faced
in 2013, as this created inconsistent workloads
at the production level during the year.
However, the final results, which showed an increase
in revenue respecting 2012, were particularly
satisfying, especially if one takes into consideration
the extremely difficult Italian economy during
this period and the industrial and economic markets’
volatility worldwide.
That said, coming from the serious economic
stagnation at both the national and European level
in 2012 with the slowdown of the Chinese and Indian
economies, the tensions in the Middle East and
the ongoing Iranian embargo, an increase in volumes,
despite a decrease in margins, can be seen
as extremely positive.
The reasons behind this resilience are known:
the SACMI Group has always focused on product
and process innovation, resulting in ongoing
modernisation and a steady stream of improvements.
A look at individual business areas shows that,
in Ceramics, innovation has led to the development
of new technologies that reduce energy consumption,
further increases in productivity to reduce specific
ceramic item costs and the implementation of more
flexible, ever-more automated production processes
for the production of large-size ceramic slabs.
SACMI has maintained its leadership position
in the tile, sanitaryware and tableware machine
markets also - and above all - as a result of constant
product range renewal; it should also be noted
that this has been achieved despite increasingly
aggressive international competition, especially
from China.
Equally deserving of mention is the development
of the Glazing and Decoration business,
which SACMI entered via the establishment
of the company INTESA: dozens of machines
have already been sold worldwide and, in light
of the continuous technical advances being made
with both machines and the inks themselves,
the outlook for further development and growth
of ink applications using digital technologies appears
bright. In fact, SACMI’s project for the construction
of an exclusively digital glazing and decoration line
has reached the advanced research stage.

capaci di garantire stabilità e solidità all’intera filiera.
prime macchine CBF (Compression Blow Forming),

Growth within the Ceramic Division was led,
in particular, by the Special Press business.
SACMI, with its metal powder presses, is one
of the sector’s leaders with innovative plants.
Technological growth is also confirmed in 2013 for the
production of Heavy Clay machines, which has been
deeply affected by the European construction crisis
in the past. SACMI now remains one of only a few
companies capable of ensuring stability and solidity
throughout the supply chain.
In the Packaging sector (Closures & Beverage),
innovation continues to pursue the goal of reducing
container costs. This has taken the tangible form
of weight reduction, i.e. containers with thinner walls
and smaller and more efficient caps. Recycled plastic
is used and less energy-hungry production processes
have been developed. Moreover, at the plant
engineering level, SACMI has succeeded in combining
growing productivity with ever-more intense,
yet more flexible, automation.
The Closure&Containers sector has enjoyed
the continuing success of the CCM (Continuous
Compression Moulding) machines, plus good results
from the first CBF (Compression Blow Forming)
machines tested in the Dairy and Pharma sectors.
The Beverage sector has, in recent years, been
the greatest absorber of investment resources.

This begins with the development of preform
production injection machines that include the
installation of several complete lines equipped with
the new IPS press, providing strong competition to
the leaders in the sector, both in terms of price
and performance. It continues with the new range
of SACMI’s innovative and high performance Blowing
and Filling machines which have achieved
the standards applied by the world’s major players.
Essential progress has also been made on preform
compression technology used for preform production.
Moreover, the installation of an innovative, patented
automatic cap-preform storage system has been
completed in one of the most important bottling
companies in Italy.
SACMI presented a complete line of innovative
Beverage machines in the fall of 2013 at Drinktec
in Munich, winning the title of best stand
and was finally recognized as a global leader
in the bottling sector at the same level of the main
German competitors.
The sales volumes for 2013 in the Plastics sector fell
sharply. However, this decrease can be partly
compensated by increased revenue and overall
improvement of the company’s capital, as well
as by an increase in orders for 2014, especially
for high tonnage machines.

Ottimi risultati nell’esercizio
Sacmi Singapore, Sacmi Shanghai, Sacmi Verona.
Presidente.
lines confirms the organizational soundness
of SACMI’s Automation Division, which worked
with all Group companies in 2013.
Another key SACMI Group performance factor
is product and service quality, pursued through both
continuous monitoring of production and assembly
lines and a central budget dedicated to quality control
of all Group companies.
Taking everything into consideration, a challenging
2013 has confirmed the Group’s positive results.
Amongst the 70 subsidiaries of the Group, the German
companies still stand out with particularly positive
trends in terms of volume increases. Among
the others that ended the year with excellent results
in 2013 were Sacmi do Brasil, Sacmi de Mexico,
Nuova Sima and Sacmi Iberica (despite the current
Spanish market which remains stagnant)
Sacmi Singapore, Sacmi Shanghai and Sacmi Verona.
Results were also positive for the Chocolate business
– in a joint venture with C&H Holding, started up
with IMA in 2011 – which closed the year with
a highly profitable consolidated result and two-figure
growth in both volumes and margins.
The fully running Biomasse plant powered by corn
represented one of the most significant activities
for 2013. This project was started by SACMI’s partner
in the energy sector, AgriBryo.
Important decisions were made at the management
level as well in 2013. In May, the Board of Directors
of the parent company was renewed, showing a sign
of continuity. This led to the election of yours truly
as President. The desire to further strengthen SACMI’s
core business in order to develop more innovative
and high performance products and plants was also
expressed clearly in the project manifesto approved
by the Member Assembly, which General Management
transformed into a strategic plan. A long-term in-
vestment plan in R&D guaranteeing the SACMI Group’s
leadership role in several business sectors in which
the company operates has also been prepared.
Other markets opportunities will be explored as well,
including the environmental field.

negli anni scorsi, in Cina e Brasile.
all’after-sales.
in Africa, in Oriente e a Occidente.
efficienza gestionale e innovazione continua
i grandi cambiamenti in atto sullo scenario mondiale,

Machines will be assembled for the local market
using the same quality standards as those used
by the parent company in Italy. This project coincides
with similar activities that have already been launched
successfully in the past year in China and Brazil.
SACMI aims to provide technology and products in line
with European quality standards, but, above all,
it will focus on operating close to the customer,
fulfilling needs and providing complete service,
which goes from project development to the final
sale, from testing to after-sales service. To achieve
this on a local level, the sales and service teams have
been reinforced.
In order to reach out even further into the world,
a project has been launched that will lead to the
opening of new offices in Africa, the East and West.
Company reorganisation has also begun which will
streamline the Group and make management more
efficient with resulting cost reductions.
Once again, farsighted decision-making and
a capacity to look ahead and anticipate market needs
has allowed SACMI to retain its role as world leader
within its specific industries. Experience, financial
solidity, managerial efficiency and ongoing innovation
continue to let SACMI maintain and increase market
shares, enhance its brand image and regulate
the Group’s manufacturing excellence and skill.
This is why we firmly believe, despite the enormous
changes affecting the world, that the time is right
for the SACMI Group to grasp further opportunities
for growth and development in the coming years.

President of Sacmi Imola
Ceramics Division

2013 marked another successful year for the Ceramics
Division. With revenue that exceeded 2012
by almost four percentage points, the developing
countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and
Indonesia (just to name a few) provided the key
to success. These results were obtained despite
the pessimistic growth predictions given
by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
It indicated that advanced economies would continue
to strengthen, while the emerging economies would
grow relatively weaker.
Italy was the Ceramics Division winner, coming in first
place in terms of revenue. Italy represents SACMI’s
base for strengthening its leadership with
the development of new technologies.
Important innovations in the kiln field, in EKO kilns
for tiles and sanitaryware, the Continua+ line
and the new EkoWrap and EkoRoll tile packaging
machines that reduce use of the raw materials used
(cardboard) by up to 60% must also be noted.
SACMI’s strong portfolio at the beginning of the year,
which counted for almost 38% of the actual budget,
was amongst the most important factors that allowed
the company to reach the goals set for 2013
with a budget excess of 5.5 percentage points.
2013 kept in line with expectations making it
a positive year for tiles. Final volumes slightly
exceeded the ambitious goals of the budget.
Even though no orders of great importance
were recorded, all budget objectives were reached.
In terms of total volume regarding machines,
SACMI made almost 315 million euro.
The country producing the greatest volumes
was Italy.
These figures reassured SACMI, rewarding
the company’s innovative spirit and confirming
that the high technological level of the investments
made was the right decision.
Saudi Arabia took second place for volume.
This market is significantly different from the Italian
un mercato estremamente diverso da quello italiano,
dove è particolarmente accentuata la concorrenza con
i principali competitor.
all’altezza delle esigenze del mercato anche
in contesti assai diversificati.
Al terzo posto l’Egitto ove, similmente all’Arabia
e la propensione all’investimento piuttosto elevata
In particolare,

one, where competition with the main competitors
is particularly fierce. While it’s comforting to know
that a highly technological market like the Italian one
values SACMI solutions, the response of emerging
markets is even more satisfying, as these markets
clearly consider SACMI a reliable brand with
an excellent reputation, as SACMI responds to market
needs in various contexts.
Egypt holds third place, where, similarly
to Saudi Arabia, Sacmi managed to obtain a strong
presence by launching the first local technical service
centre, highly appreciated and regarded by customers.
Turkey follows in fourth place for volume.
This country has always been considered strategic due
to a strong ceramics tradition and the inclination
of local manufacturers to invest heavily. Lastly, Brazil
comes in fifth place, an area that has generated much
satisfaction for SACMI for years and continues in terms
of sales volume reached in 2013, showing how
it values the Group with highly prestigious
investments.
In particular, Brazil is experiencing a new investment
phase, aimed at porcelain trim production
which requires continuous grinding presses,
high tonnage presses, etc.: SACMI has proven,
in the last fiscal year and current one, to be best
suited to handle the requests for these investments
amongst all its competitors.
Sixth place goes to the USA, where the Group’s good
performance is in line with the investments made
by Italian companies in that country, confirming that
the Italian market is strategic even in an international
scenario.
In particolare,
quest’ultima rivoluzionaria tecnologia per grandi lastre
si sta dimostrando estremamente importante
17
Finally, Indonesia places seventh. Considering
its proximity to China, SACMI’s strong presence
in this country should be considered very positive.
Regarding China, the country recorded sales
for millions of Euros in 2013.
Of special note is the subsidiary, Sacmi Nanhai,
which supplied over 100 presses to the local market
and closed with reassuring results
in its balance sheet.
In general, the main countries of reference
in which Sacmi is present with subsidiaries or simple
service centres proved to be strategic for business
success, as long as they were dynamic and ready
to fulfil customers’ needs.
This local presence gives SACMI the advantage
over its main competitors and helps explain
the excellent results the company has obtained
in these markets.
This also confirms the importance of maintaining
a widespread presence in the market, a crucial
element for reaching the set goals, especially
in terms of large sales volumes, essential
to the company’s success.
As far as individual products are concerned,
2013 marked the consolidation of solutions,
such as EKO kilns (which the market already valued),
the putting into service of the first RMC slip refiner
modules, the EkoWrap and EkoRoll packaging choices,
the INTESA digital decorating machines, and,
above all, the definitive launch of the new Continua+
technology.
This revolutionary technology for large slabs
has become extremely important for SACMI and offers

a termine in Arabia Saudita e in Brasile.
fra l’altro, l’ingresso in Laufen, azienda storicamente
many advantages with respect to similar solutions
present on the market.
SACMI will focus all its efforts and synergies on large
formats in 2014.
The results for Whiteware in 2013 were in line with
predictions, respecting the set objectives in terms
of countries and targeted customers.
The share of revenues obtained with the sale
of sanitaryware machines was significant in the previous
fiscal year. SAMA, in particular, sold a significant
amount of individual machines that were produced
at the facilities in Imola. In 2013, record numbers
were recorded for sales of isostatic presses, the most
sold since they were launched in the market.
Regarding single orders, the Umberto project in India
was extremely significant as it permitted a complete
sanitaryware plant to be created. It is currently being
put into operation and has an excellent chance of being
expanded between the end of 2014 and the beginning
of 2015. For sanitaryware, the projects finalised
in Saudi Arabia and in Brazil must be mentioned
as well. The validity of SACMI’s technologies for casting,
glazing and firing has been confirmed through
the partnership with the Toto Group in India, Mexico
and Indonesia. Finally, Vitra should be noted
for its purchase of machines for the new plant in
Russia, which are currently being put into operation.
Roca, on the other hand, continues to manage the
closure of the Spanish facilities, and has designated
SACMI to handle machine and plant repositioning in
other plants of the Group. This has allowed the Group
to start doing business with Laufen, a company that
has always been monopolised by the competition
in the past. In the case of medium-sized companies,
the South American company, Vaal, stands out.
It has been supplied with casting and glazing
machines and there is a good chance that SACMI may
supply further machines when the company expands,
foreseen in 2015.

In particolare,
destinandole prevalentemente a sostituzioni
These noteworthy results contribute to an excellent
revenue base and market penetration, all strategic
elements that assure business prospects and success.
To complete the picture, the high fidelity of SACMI’s
customers must be mentioned. SACMI has always
established and nurtured relationships based on
mutual respect and trust. The company continues
to focus on this goal. One way Sacmi will attempt to
reach this target is by further developing After-Sales
Service, which reinforces the special relationship
between SACMI and its customers. Another way that
has proven to be very effective in maintaining
relationships and, hence, leadership in the sector,
is the decision to make periodic visits to customers
and keep in constant contact with the head technicians,
in order to propose upgrades or improvements.
Special pressings represent a smaller part of
the Ceramics Division’s business in terms of revenue.
However, the high technology involved makes it merit
attention. In 2013, the results of special pressing
confirmed past trends for the various commercial
segments.
Refractory manufacturers continue to invest their
resources sensibly, mainly using them for replacing
plants in order to increase process efficiency
or product quality. In most countries around the world,
even those with higher growth rates like China,
there is a tendency to manufacture more than needed
to fulfil the current real demand. Market stagnation
is compensated by increased sales in other markets.
However, the negative outlook cannot be completely
attributed to pressed refractory materials.
Physiological market fluctuations, which occur
from time to time as observed in the recent past,
must also be taken into consideration.
In contrast, the quality of the equipment needed
to support high-tech development makes customers
turn to reliable, high quality machines that help them
defend their positions in the market. From this point
of view, the well-known Sacmi and Laeis brands offer
excellent choices for maintaining market shares.
Continuous attention must be given to

20
the development of technology in order to uphold
the gap needed to safeguard these market shares
from intense Chinese competition, where companies
learn about the technological propositions and copy
them extremely quickly.
Nevertheless, the Group’s Riedhammer kilns should
experience significant growth in China.
Manufacturers are practically obligated to make
new investments in kilns due to plants being
transferred outside high density living areas
(for environmental reasons). This gives Riedhammer
and Sacmi Changshu an excellent opportunity
to increase their market shares, as well as volumes.
The metal powders (MP) market confirms its
increased potential for growth in 2013. Even though
only 6 machines were supplied last year, the order
portfolio had suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated
in a short period of time (this was expected,
but over a longer period) starting from the end
of the third quarter. The boost in orders was so high
that an increase of +200% is predicted for 2014,
which would compensate for the refractory
production decline.
SACMI has become a consolidated supplier
of multi-level hydraulic machines in direct competition
with the historic leaders in this market, first
of all thanks to its successful collaboration with
GKN Sintermetals, which led the company
to the podium in the PM machine supplier market.
However, the company needs to focus closely
on the quality of the supply and the growth
of the industrial and service organizations so as not
to delude the high expectations the customers have
regarding the brand. At the same time, the fast
growth of the demand must be managed
and consolidated quickly with professionalism,
something that has always characterised SACMI.
SACMI is especially proud of the accolades received
this year. The company was honoured with the
prestigious GKN Sintermetal President’s Award 2014
as best partner for developing the MPH400
best-in-class press. This 400 T hydraulic machine
with 11 closed ring axes is today considered the top
technology in the market and is recognized as such
by customers. The delivery of the MPH500 to Hitachi,
completed at the end 2013, confirmed the SACMI
brand’s growing prestige in the market.
Ceramics Division
di primissimo piano, la consegna della MPH500

Nel 2013 è stato anche avviato presso GKN,
in Germania, il primo forno a rulli Riedhammer
per la sintero-tempra ad alta temperatura (1.280°C)
in atmosfera di idrogeno. Nonostante le oggettive
difficoltà tecniche legate all’elevato gradiente
europei e internazionali precedentemente analizzati.
Nord Africa (in particolare Algeria), Sud America
(in particolare Brasile, Argentina e Perù) e Russia.
21
The GKN press was also put into operation in Germany
in 2013. This represented the first Riedhammer roller
kiln that performs high temperature sinter hardening
(1,280°C) in a hydrogen atmosphere.
Regardless of the technical difficulties encountered
due to the fast cooling gradient needed for hardening,
the kiln tested successfully in almost all operating
conditions.
Overall, Sacmi and Laeis produced 21 new forming
lines, showing a slight decline in relation to 2012.
However, this data must be viewed in the context
of the previously analysed European and International
markets.
The heavy clay business suffered again in 2013
due to construction market trends. The construction
market continues to be sluggish and is actually getting
worse, with the exception of only a few countries.
In 2012, sales activities focused mainly on geographic
areas where the construction market was booming:
North Africa (Algeria in particular), South America
(Brazil, Argentina and Peru in particular) and Russia.
In 2013, encouraging results came from sales
activities in Argentina, Peru and Algeria.
While the sales in these countries were not very
important in terms of revenue volumes, they were
very significant in terms of references,
with the expectation that these projects will trigger
the start of others.
In Russia, SACMI participated in some very large
projects. Due to the size of these projects,
they are still in progress.
Regarding products, Sacmi achieved the expected
results in 2013 for the work done to standardise kilns
and driers in Sacmi Forni: now SACMI’s technical/sales
offer can be considered well aligned with
the competition.

dimensioni.

From a market standpoint, historically large suppliers
suffered in 2013.
Some actually had to undergo significant restructuring
operations leading to staff reduction. In contrast,
small to medium-sized
companies that offered products in the low price
range and mainly focused on the Algerian market
showed successful results.

Nel 2013, il fatturato complessivo della Divisione
Closures & Containers è risultato pari a 168 milioni
asiatico (innanzitutto Indonesia, terzo mercato
macchine installate. Nel 2013 sono state vendute

In 2013, overall revenue for Closures & Containers
totalled 168 million Euros. Like the year before,
revenue was generated by sales recorded all over
the world; more precisely, in 50 countries,
demonstrating once again the importance
of a widespread presence as well as a strong brand
image, which characterises SACMI. The sinusoidal
progress of orders represents one of the issues
encountered, a persisting problem for many years
which, in some cases, has gotten worse by some
effects of globalisation. This creates an exasperatingly
high concentration of orders during certain periods
of the year that must be faced with increased
production flexibility, when possible.
Reviewing individual countries in detail, growth
has been seen in China, which continues to be
the main reference market for the Division,
while progress in India continues to oscillate
with results far below the best figures for the country
in other years.
Despite an uncertain political scenario and a lengthy
undeclared civil war, Venezuela, a country potentially
rich in resources and therefore capable of developing
high demand, came in second place.
Interesting volumes have been recorded
in South-East Asia (first in Indonesia, third largest
market of the region, and Thailand) and in the Far-East
(Korea and Japan), as well as in Latin America.
Besides the already mentioned Venezuela, Mexico
positioned third in terms of sales volumes.
Even Europe achieved an important result thanks
to an order generated last year for the same bottling
company that, after testing SACMI technology
for a few months, completed its investment
in compression machines to further increase
its already high capacity production levels.
Africa’s performance also deserves to be mentioned.
The number of countries on this continent that install
machines increases continuously. In 2013, machines
were sold in 9 countries and sales offices in Morocco,
South Africa and Kenya are already being prepared.
In addition to actions that increased production
flexibility, allowing the Division to deal with market

vendite in Marocco, Sudafrica e Kenya.
a perfezionare soluzioni tecniche e prestazionali
tecniche e l’ambito tecnologico; è infatti grazie

cycles more effectively, it also focused much time
and effort on R&D again in 2013.
Important investments in refining technical
and performance solutions were made in order
to maintain the advantage over the competition
in the domestic, European, American and Far Eastern
markets.
The research targeted two main areas
as usual: technical solutions and technology.
The combination of these two aspects has always
been the key to SACMI’s winning offers and will
hopefully continue providing customers with
ever-more competitive TCO (total cost of ownership)
in the perspective.
After three years of growth (2010-2012), 2013
showed a decline of approximately 7%
in the Beverage world. This phenomenon (source:
ABMI) stands out even more if only compared
to the last quarter of the year, in which a 16%
drop was recorded.
When taking into consideration the “Drinktec Effect”,

a dare effetti tangibili.
soluzioni non solo relative all’imbottigliamento
e all’autoproduzione dell’imballo (capsule e preforme).
SACMI FILLING
Come accennato, Sacmi Filling vive oramai in totale
dipendenza dal risultato complessivo della Divisione
Beverage. Di conseguenza, anche se l’azienda –
per questioni contabili pregresse – chiuderà il 2013
this data was quite unexpected. The exhibition
dedicated to bottling machines that takes place
in Düsseldorf every four years boosted orders
considerably in the second part of 2009, but the effect
did not repeat itself in 2013, with a surprisingly
significant drop in orders.
The Beverage Division, and consequently,
Sacmi Filling, both showed progress in line with the
market. They both closed 2013 with a loss respecting
budget forecasts. The output limit characterised
by blowing machines and the need to address
a poorer market such as that of the low and medium
range lines did not permit the initially set volumes
to be reached.
The attempt to compensate for the forecasted drop
in volumes, already accounted for in the budget,
only reached the objective in part, even though
commercial structures were obligated to operate
in synergy.
The tangible effects of the positive effect
of the synergy have only started to be seen now.
SACMI also had to face more
competition in the supply of plants to medium/
small-sized companies, a segment in which suppliers
(mostly Chinese) capable of providing solutions
is quickly expanding.
Regardless of the Beverage world’s disappointing
performance, the positive effect of Drinktec on many
of the Division’s projects should be underlined.
Some of these projects have accelerated quickly
and are already in the final phases or actually
completed and ready to order. These results confirm
that SACMI chose the right strategy and approach
in past years.
In the PET field, SACMI is today considered
an integrator that provides solutions for bottling,
logistics (with its CPB warehouse) and self-producing
packaging (caps and preforms).
Thanks to this characteristic, the Division
is strengthening its plant offer with preform machines
and CCM’s.
SACMI FILLING
As implied earlier, Sacmi Filling depends completely
on the overall results of the Beverage Division.
Consequently, even though the company will close
2013 with negative results due to previous budget
28
Packaging Division
è risultato in sostanziale equilibrio.
SACMI LABELLING
FormSleeve.
issues, the company management trend resulted
evenly balanced.
SACMI LABELLING
A positive note, without doubt, comes from the good
progress shown by Sacmi Labelling, confirming a net
profit even in 2013. The new modular range
of Labelling machines and the very close attention
paid to Rollfed production costs (the heart of Sacmi
Labelling today) maintained high sales volumes.
At the same time, Sacmi Labelling opened new
development possibilities for other models,
such as Sealing machines, reel Sleever machines
and linear Sleever machines.
Finally, it had the opportunity to better promote
the new FormSleeve technology.
In 2011 and 2012, SACMI Packaging developed
solutions that targeted the bottling world more
and more. These solutions were dedicated to the last
line of Sacmi Beverage plants. 2013 represented
a year of consolidation of these products,
with the sale of new single column 2-axis Cartesian
palletizing machines and the new perimeter gripper,
solutions that proved essential for simplifying layouts
and containing costs.

Il 2013 è stato il primo esercizio completo
in cui hanno operato le nuove realtà
Carle&Montanari-OPM Spa e CM-FIMA Srl derivate
dalla operazione di riorganizzazione
di Carle&Montanari Holding (CMH), completata
a ottobre 2012.
CMH Srl controlla
anche la società di vendita e servizi
Carle&Montanari-OPM Usa Inc.
C&M-OPM
positiva sia rispetto all’andamento dell’esercizio
dimostrando particolarmente attive – a cominciare
2013 marks the first complete year of operation
for Carle&Montanari-OPM Spa and CM-FIMA Srl.
These new companies come from the re-organisation

C&M-OPM
The results of 2013 demonstrate a clearly positive
trend compared to the previous year in regards
to historic trends of the individual companies before
the merger. The company reached excellent results
in terms of Ebitda: 4.62 million Euros, respecting the
1.14 million Euros of the previous year.
These results can be attributed to the successful
synergies and opportunities that came from
the merger of Carle&Montanari and OPM, as well
as excellent resource management in all company
departments.
Order flows were, for most of the year, steady
and satisfactory, with a peak in the third quarter,
coinciding with the finalisation of an outline
agreement with the Modelez International Group
(ex-Kraft Group) for the supply of a minimum of eight
modelling lines. Delivery is scheduled for 2014/2015.
Sales performance experienced a 7% decline
in volumes with respect to 2012.
This was compensated, however, by the production
value levels due to some deliveries that had
to be postponed from 2013 to 2014.
Overall, the product ranges showed vitality, even
though the determining factor for increasing volumes
was the Modelling sector, which was aided by the
outline agreement mentioned earlier.
Besides some geographic areas showing much
activity, starting with Turkey, and others showing signs
of recovery, such as the Mid-East (with the exception
of Syria and bordering countries of course), the small/
medium customer market remained stagnant.
32
Infatti, i grandi gruppi multinazionali
In particolare,
tecnologico, rispondendo in modo efficace
primario e secondario.
Parallelamente, C&M-OPM sta studiando la possibilità

The 2013 Progress Report clearly demonstrated how
growth opportunities in the food sector occurred
through the expansion of large multi-national
companies in the markets in which they operate.
From this standpoint, Carle&Montanari-OPM Spa
has all the elements needed in terms of organization
model and product type to adapt to this type
of customer and take advantage of the situation.
The large multi-national companies value C&M-OPM
for its capability of supplying goods and services
on a global level, while maintaining a flexibility
that counterbalances the rigidity of these large
Groups. C&M-OPM also makes the difference
by offering medium-high range solutions
with competitive prices.
As far as its product range is concerned, C&M-OPM
will continue to improve its existing machines in 2014,
as well as finalise new models in all product
segments.
C&M-OPM plans to remind the market of its capability
of supplying highly technological machines
at Interpack 2014.
These machines completely satisfy the needs
of the entire chocolate production supply chain,
from modelling to first and second level packaging.
C&M-OPM is also researching how to expand
its solutions to other food sectors, such as biscuit
packaging. Some important projects in progress,
due to a partnership concluded with PepsiCo,
stand out in this sector.
At the beginning of 2013, the SAP management
and control system came into operation

molto importante.
at the Monticello d’Alba site, establishing operation
under a single management system.
Start-up did not encounter any issues (in part thanks
to the fact that the Rozzano site had used SAP
for years), even if some final refinements need
to be made to adapt the system to the adopted
production model.
C&M-FIMA
The difficulties in the wrapping market continued
in 2013.
This was due to the sharp drop in consumption
in western countries and the difficulty of accessing
credit in banks by medium and small-sized customer
companies.
Moreover, the crisis in the Ukraine almost completely
blocked orders coming from a very important
customer that raised sales results of ex-Fima machines
for years.
A certain stagnation has also been confirmed for sales
in China and India, regardless of the company’s strong
presence in these regions through its sales agents
and constant participation in exhibitions of the sector.
On a positive note, relations with some Key Accounts
(Ferrero, Mondelez, Mars) have been strengthened,
which may lead to an important development
in plant orders.
In general, 2013 featured a low customer portfolio
in the beginning of the year and a good order flow
for the entire first semester.
The second semester experienced a significant decline
in order flows that reflected negatively on deliveries
in the first quarter of 2014.
Signs of recovery were noted in the last period,
bringing the order portfolio back to interesting levels.
The wide range of machines in the portfolio,
combined with the quality of service, remain
C&M-FIMA’s main distinguishing features.
The company can be considered an ideal partner
for medium/small-sized companies as well
as for large multi-national groups.

Tale caratteristica permette inoltre di minimizzare
i rischi di concentrazione e poter diversificare

La maggiore collaborazione tra le organizzazioni

Carle&Montanari-OPM, avviata in concomitanza

Queste ultime, in progresso negli ultimi 5 esercizi
tradizionali.
Per quanto riguarda il business dei Sistemi
di Visione, nel 2013 sono aumentate le vendite
in Estremo Oriente (+10%) e in Europa (+16%);
2013 with a 7% increase, after a 20% increase
the year before, in relation to 2011.
Internal sales towards other Divisions in SACMI IMOLA,
which include systems integrated into machines
and plants directed to the market by other business
units, represent 25% of total revenue with
an absolute value that has remained constant
for a few years now, while direct sales reached 75%,
showing a growth rate of 10% compared to 2012.
Direct sales achieved double-digit growth, on average,
for the past 5 years. These numbers clearly
demonstrate, more than any other parameter,
the quality of the product offered. In order to continue
growing at this rate in the future, the performance
and flexibility of these products must be constantly
improved.
In 2013, the Inspection Systems Division seized all
the opportunities offered by the market. The forecast
indicating the consolidation of the results obtained
in 2012 was confirmed. 2013 also marked a transition
period during the finalisation of new machine models
that would permit the Division to approach other
market niches aggressively while holding back
an ever-increasingly intense competition in traditional
markets.
Regarding Vision Systems business, sales increased
in 2013 in the Far East (+10%) and in Europe (+16%),
while they remained constant in Latin America
and fell in the USA. These results were expected,
given the high concentration of manufacturers
in the Closures market that penalised investments
in quality control. China’s contribution, on the other
hand, started growing again on a global level.
It represented 48% of total revenue in 2013,
compensating for a volume decrease in the Thai
market, which returned to more moderate values
after reaching a peak in 2012.
One of the main highlights of 2013 was the increased
customer loyalty on the part of two important clients
in the Far East.
The first ordered 20 Cap Handling System (CHS) lines
for plastic and aluminium cap screening, while
the second ordered 5 CHS’s and 7 Bottle Vision
38
specialmente Closures & Containers e Beverage,
e K (Plastica) a fine 2013.

Systems (BVS), which screen containers for
the pharmaceutical and dairy sectors. Also worthy
of mention was the ever-expanding customer portfolio
in other South-East Asian countries, such as Vietnam,
Indonesia and Malaysia. This was due to a more
incisive commercial synergy with other SACMI
businesses, especially Closures & Containers and
Beverage, as well as to the reinforced local service
structure headquartered in Shanghai with a subsidiary
in Bangkok.
As far as individual solutions are concerned,
the CHS confirmed its leadership in 2013 with
50 delivered units. The Closure sector attracted
the competition, which came out in full force during
the two main industry exhibitions at the end
of 2013: Drinktec (Beverage) and K (Plastics).
From this standpoint, the Lean CHS redesign activity,
started with the intention of optimizing costs
and increasing inspection speeds up to 3000 caps/
min, will be extremely important to breathe new life
into a machine that has reached full maturity
in its life cycle.
Regarding demand, the customer mix of those
that make first time purchases and those that
purchase again provides hope even for 2014.
In particular, the current year proves to be very
promising for the BVS and the PVS (Preform Vision
System) lines that spot check and screen preforms.
The metal sector also shows potential, especially
concerning the new illuminator range and relative
image capture devices of the MVS (Metal Vision
System) line that will be presented by the end
of next year.
39
per l’ispezione a campione e a tappeto delle Preforme;
Messa a punto
sull’MVS, tale tecnologia verrà in seguito messa
mantenuto quanto preventivato a budget, bissando
e giro d’affari.
The MVS line also adopts innovative technologies
for image transmission that provide scalability, i.e.
the device can adapt the complexity and costs
of the technology used to specific application
requirements. Once this is perfected on the MVS,
the technology will be made available to the other
Inspection Systems that are currently part
of the Division’s portfolio.
Overall, the renewal and expansion of the machine
range that started in 2012, has proven to be
a winning strategy.
This goes hand in hand with the commercial
restructuring started in 2013 that has allowed greater
coverage of the global market and activated Group
synergies, the fruits of which could already
be seen last year.
Sales figures for the other two businesses
of the Inspection Systems Division, Sistemi NIR
and Sistemi Olfattivi, were in line with budget
expectations, repeating the record performance
of 2012 in terms of volumes and turnover.

NEGRI BOSSI
proposte. Condizione necessaria, quest’ultima,
NEGRI BOSSI
The economies of the Euro zone have gone through
substantial periods of recession since 2008, followed
by weak and temporary periods of recovery.
Oscillation between these contradictory conditions
in time periods of less than a year characterised 2013
as well. The first semester was weak, followed
by a recovery in the second semester.
Overall, 2013 closed with a 25% decline in sales
volumes. This drop was due in part to the American
market being managed differently respecting Group
management. Purchase volumes from Negri Bossi
Spa suffered, and local warehouses were streamlined.
However, sales volumes in the national market
flourished, despite a general market decline,
with Negri Bossi Spa’s volumes increasing thanks
to an aggressive sales policy combined with spot-on
products, such as the “Linea Sintesi Global.”
The UK subsidiary continued to bring in good results.
The French subsidiary recovered slightly, while
the Spanish subsidiary encountered difficulties.
This particular market experienced the same fate
as the Italian market in recent years.
However, it has inverted this tendency starting
in the last quarter, providing high expectations
for 2014. Roboline-Sytrama has experienced a similar
trend, creating the majority of revenue inside
the Negri Bossi Group and therefore, having the same
performance results.
An anxious search for fiscal subsidies by customers
was one of the most critical issues observed.
From this standpoint, the valid opportunities available
to German competitors were not available to Italian
companies.
Regarding products, the start of “evolution” version
production involving all the product lines including
hydraulic, hybrid and electric devices, created
the basis for a definitive modular production of the
entire machine range offered. This became a required
condition for warehouse reductions and for decreasing
crossover times.
The redesign of the 2 leading products in the

riguarda i mercati emergenti quali Turchia, Russia

medium/high tonnage machine field, the Vector line,
has increased technical competitiveness and reduced
costs significantly. Even Syntrama completely
redesigned its small/medium-sized robots.
This type of engineering helped reduce the amount
of components needed, benefiting the time and costs
involved.
Prospects for 2014 show a moderate recovery
in the Euro zone and in the North American market,
while a more uncertain horizon lies ahead
for emerging markets such as Turkey, Russia and Brazil
where the fall of the local currency will most likely
create difficulty for imports of investment goods
coming from countries that use currencies like
the Euro.
In contrast, the Indian subsidiary confirmed
a positive performance.
The subsidiary improved its sales and production
activities, even if its level of margins needs
to increase by pushing component nationalisation,
which will allow the company to exit its launch phase.
BI POWER
The Bi Power Division provided a net recovery
of sales in the second half of 2013.
However, the revenue volumes were still
disappointing when presented with the final balance
of the year.
One of the reasons for this include unfavourable
internal circumstances not allowing important Italian
market shares to be reclaimed, with the exception
43
tedesca.
dimensioni. Tale pressa, che sarà la più grande
in produzione mai installata nel territorio europeo, sarà
consegnata in Portogallo nel secondo semestre 2014
presso un operatore leader del settore. A ridosso
dell’anno.
of the Automotive niche, where heavy investments
are being made.
Some companies that supply the main Italian
manufacturers of automobiles have invested in Italian,
Eastern European and overseas business.
This permitted Sacmi BP to collect significant orders
and overcome the intense German competition
in the more competitive production niche
characterised by higher technology.
Medium/large-sized presses (up to 2700 tons) were
sold in the automotive sub-supply network through
an action of penetration that will guarantee
production continuity for the next three years, totalling
in over 20 million Euros of expected revenue.
An order of a VH 7000 ton press, used for
the production of large-size technological containers,
was finalised in 2013.
This press, the largest in production to ever be
installed in the European territory, will be delivered to
Portugal at the site of a leading operator in the sector,
in the second semester of 2014.
Once the press has been delivered and final testing
has been performed, specialized operators will be
invited to an open house in Imola as part of a
promotional activity.
Thanks to widespread commercial business, the sales
of 1500 and 2000 ton presses also increased
with deliveries set for the first months of 2014.
The year 2013 will also be remembered for
the signing of a collaboration agreement with
an important Latin American multi-national Group
for the development and supply of plants that produce
“Petroleum Piping” accessories.
A fidelity agreement has been reached with the Latin
American PTM-FEMSA Group as well, for the supply
of plants for pallet production.
The revision of the BP range of models continue
at full speed: the VH 1700 will be unveiled in 2014
and the VH 2700, a revision of the current VH 2500,
has already been booked for several orders with
delivery set for the second half of the year.
At the same time, the sales success of the first VH
1000 was celebrated with its delivery to a customer
in the United Kingdom.
This press, the result of a project involving the three
units in Imola and Brescia, was presented at an
exhibition in Düsseldorf and met with great interest.
e consumi all’altezza dei cicli produttivi attualmente
Negri Bossi e Bi-Power, oltre a Robotline-Sytrama
e a tutte le aziende NB collegate in Spagna, Francia,
Inghilterra, India, USA e Canada – al colosso americano
Kingsbury. Un’operazione finalizzata, da un lato,
ad una maggiore concentrazione sui core business
del Gruppo. Dall’altro a incrementare ulteriormente
44
The new hydraulic plant and new Powerlink control
unit attracted much attention as well.
These planned projects open the doors to a control
system that is no longer based on a field bus, but,
rather on an “Ethernet” schematic, providing the type
of production cycle performance and consumption
currently demanded by the market.
On a different note, the transfer of the entire Plastics
Division will help increase the company’s presence
in reference markets, as well as diversify and expand
the customer portfolio in 2014.
The division includes Negri Bossi and Bi-Power,
along with Robotline-Sytrama and all the other
connecting NB companies in Spain, France, England,
India, USA and Canada, as well as the American
colossus Kingsbury.
The objective of the operation is to increase the focus
on the Group’s core business, as well as hire additional
personnel and boost output capacity even further at
the Italian sites with a strong push on large tonnage
presses (which already register orders at record levels)
thanks to the strong ties that will be maintained
between Kingsbury and Sacmi.

Services Division
HPS
Entrando nel dettaglio delle singole realtà, HPS,
nell’ambito dei servizi amministrativi, informatici,
legali e societari utilizza metodologie pay-per-use
crescita.

47
Like in 2012, the Services Division continued working
on completing its plans for development based on
growth in both the captive and open markets in 2013.
An overview of the year that just closed underlines
that, in terms of dynamics and results, performance
within the two reference segments differed
considerably.
Within the captive market, the strategy of centralising
services continued to yield good results,
with both consolidated and new services being
provided to existing Group companies; as ever,
there was a strong focus on cost reduction.
This latter aspect is absolutely strategic to
the competitiveness of the individual businesses and,
therefore, the entire Group.
In 2013, the Open Market was characterised
by a slight drop in volumes.
HPS
A closer look at the individual companies shows
that HPS introduced (within the field of administrative,
IT, legal and corporate services) pay-to-use methods
that allow the level of service to be measured and,
for Group companies, costs to be fully variabilized.
The ‘netting’ project has continued within the Group
treasury services in 2013, the aim being to ensure
more efficient management of the liquidity,
even where temporary, of individual companies,
thus reducing the onerousness of overall debt.
These policies have, despite fast-growing volumes,
led to regained efficiency in terms of the absolute
value of costs.
The company is also undergoing a re-organisation
period headed by Sacmi Imola in order to rationalise
accounting systems and participating interests.
ITALIANSPED
In 2013, the company has consolidated
and strengthened Group logistics by involving
other companies working in the Sassuolo district,
extending its services to include complete warehouse
and packaging management at the customer sites.
On the Open Market, Italiansped achieved its set
goals, allowing optimisation of fixed costs
servizi anche alla gestione completa del magazzino
e dell’imballo presso gli stessi clienti.
Nell’ambito dell’Open Market, Italiansped ha raggiunto
gli obiettivi prefissati che hanno permesso
un’ottimizzazione dei costi fissi, a vantaggio
del risultato aziendale.
PROTESA
Permane una congiuntura negativa del mercato
interno delle energie rinnovabili – la cui concausa,
essendosi ridotti gli incentivi, è da ricercarsi
nell’esigenza di indirizzare gli investimenti
all’autoconsumo e all’efficienza energetica – che ha
allocate in altri servizi.

to the considerable advantage of overall corporate

PROTESA
The Open Market was characterised by a slump
in the internal renewable energy sector, a prime
cause of this could be attributed to the need
to address investments towards self-consumption
and energy efficiency (as incentives were reduced).
This lowered business volumes for Protesa
in Photovoltaic plants in the Open Market.
Revenues reached 8.6 million Euros in 2013,
decreasing from the year before when Protesa made
8.8 million Euros.
Within this scenario, even 2013 saw
the implementation of an organisational
rationalisation plan, already in progress last year
with the externalisation of some activities such
as operative maintenance.
These resources were allocated to other services.
Protesa has continued its initiatives to regain
efficiency and boost some services in order to answer
the company needs in the year that has just closed.
