“What can my   family do to help

protect the unborn?”

The Venerable Archbishop      Fulton Sheen gave us a beautiful answer. When                Roe vs Wade opened up the floodgates for                abortion, he wrote a “Spiritual Adoption Prayer”              that families can pray in private in their own                  homes to call for God’s protection of the unborn                  – the most powerful protection of all!

Holy Heroes has taken this prayer and built a                  nine-month Spiritual Adoption Prayer Adventure          around it. It’s a FREE, fun, and engaging way for                    kids and families to learn about the miracle and                  sanctity of life!

The Adventure lasts for 40 weeks (the normal                length of pregnancy) and includes over 20 email                updates on the development of the baby, links to                  fun videos from the Holy Heroes “Adventure              Guides,” amazing scientific videos, audio prayers            to pray along with, printable activities, and more.

Our parish offers Faith Formation          opportunities for all ages! The office, parish              library, and FORMED.org have excellent          resources for self-study on a variety of faith                topics. The third Judgment in planning liturgical music              is Pastoral . As the pastor is responsible for guiding                  the parish into a deeper relationship with God,                the music minister/director has the responsibility            to foster prayer through music.

Some considerations:   ● Is it a small parish with limited resources

or a large one?  ● Is it an inner city or rural parish?  ● Is it an ethnic parish?    ● Is it a parish with an established music

program or one just starting?  ● Is it a crisp fall day or a hot humid day?    ● Is it a full church or is it half-empty?

There are hymns and songs that reflect and                reinforce Scripture, but how are they executed?

First of all, traditional hymnody was composed              mainly for congregations that sang in four-part              harmony. Aer Vatican II, Catholic publishers            rapidly adapted many hymns straight from other              sources with the result that the "melody" is in the                    soprano line. This can easily be sung by sopranos                  and tenors but not by altos or basses as notes will                      be outside of their range or comfort zone. So how                    do we make these four-part hymns easier for                more people to sing? One of the techniques                organists learn is transposition: the lowering or              raising of the key in which hymns are played.

Another important factor is the effect of weather                and time of day. A cool day makes it easy to sing                        higher while a humid day makes it difficult to                  reach those high notes. Additionally, since vocal              cords are muscles, they’re not warmed up early in                  the morning but have an easier time later in the                    day.

Another pastoral concern is the congregation’s            learning of new music. Careful planning means              not overloading a parish with too much new                music at any one time while allowing repetition                to learn new selections.

Similar to teachers, music directors spend            considerable time over the summer forming a              broad lesson plan for the September through June                liturgical seasons.

I hope these columns have whetted your appetite                to learn more about the music of the Mass. Please                    don’t hesitate to stop me aer Mass if you have                    any questions about why we sing what we sing. I’d                    love to hear from you!
